DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 25, 2012

— Some of 600 children certified as hearing may possibly be deaf!

In Liverpool, England, a doctor gave hearing tests to 600 children,
and signed papers showing they were hearing. These tests took place
at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital audiology clinic between 2007
and 2011. Later, it looked fishy because about 10 of the children
were found to be deaf. The shocked hospital staff fired the doctor
and ordered all 600 children to be re-tested! The angry British
public health officials is investigating it and may revoke the
doctor’s license. And possibly go to jail for fraud.

 

— A famous comment by a deaf chef of a deaf-owned restaurant

The Viuda Bistro is a deaf-owned restaurant in Buda, Texas, near
Austin. The restaurant chef is Kurt Ramborger. He is deaf.

He said:
You don’t need ears to cook

Kurt is right; we have a few deaf chefs in USA, including two in
the Los Angeles/Southern California area. These two stand out
in the area as one of the best chefs around.

 

— England wants more deaf reporters on TV news programs

Few weeks ago DeafDigest mentioned that Karen Meyers may be the
nation’s only deaf TV news reporter. England better than USA?
The BBC, a big TV network in England, wants to hire about 10 new
deaf reporters for TV news programs! Why England and not USA?

 

— Post office confusion between deaf school and hearing school

In Phoenix, there are two schools – Phoenix Day School for the Deaf
(PDSD) and the Phoenix Country Day School (PCDS). It is these
abbreviations, and possibly the full names, that confused
the mail carriers. From time to time wrong letters and wrong packages
would be delivered to the wrong schools! Now, because of better
technology (bar code), mistakes and confusion are no more.

 

— Kodak bankruptcy and the deaf

It is sad to read about Kodak filing bankruptcy. Years back,
Thomas Edison, a deaf man, invented movie equipment to shoot
movies. Kodak invented the film that Edison needed to make
these movies. In 1971 Kodak hired its first NTID graduate.
And the number of deaf employees grew to about 100. 
These deaf people had backgrounds in engineering, science,
computer aided design technology, photography, printing,
business and computers. And at annual NTID job fairs,
Kodak was always there. What is the future? Kodak will not
disappear and will probably change into something different
and will still continue to hire the deaf.

– Changed video setting and style

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

DeafDigest mentioned a while ago that the Viuda Bistro
restaurant, near Austin, Texas, is deaf owned and
deaf operated. This restaurant has received good
reviews in a local newspaper. While the novelty
of a deaf restaurant has leveled off, there is a
core of loyal patrons that keep on coming in to eat
on a regular basis.

Many deaf people in Africa are unemployed. One such deaf man – Boniface Okutoyi, of Kenya, is a
successful businessman. He owns his carpentry business,
and word got around among hearing patrons of his
woodworking skills. He makes furniture from scratch –
sofa sets, dining tables, school chairs, desks,
stools, etc. Hearing patrons gesture to him or draw
on a piece of paper what they want, and Boniface
quickly catches on.

A $60.00 hearing aid? Yes, in India if C-DAC, a
manufacturer, has its way. It was announced that
C-DAC is going ahead with its plans.

– Thursday January 19th

Deaf leaders in Pakistan is asking the government to
set aside two percent of jobs for the deaf. They are
claiming that the government is backing out of its
promise to find jobs for the deaf.

– Friday January 20th

Deaf Britons no longer get Disability Living Allowance
(sort of like our SSDI). But it is being replaced by
Personal Independence Payment. And this is something
they are not familiar with and are trying to figure out
exactly what is this supposed to be.

– Saturday January 21st

It is bad enough for the deaf to be second class
citizens in South Africa, let alone being second
class collegiate students! The issue is that
aspiring deaf collegiate students are often not
able to take courses they want to take. Much has
to do with attitude against the deaf and lack of
qualified interpreters in classes.

In almost all nations, there are deaf playing against the deaf
in a variety of sports, including the National Deaf Games.
How important are these National Deaf Games to the city’s
economy. The city officials of Adelaide, Australia, excited
over hosting the 2016 Australian Deaf Games, put a dollar
figure on economy. They estimated $1.5 million Australian
dollars being pumped into the Adelaide economy in 2016. Where does the money go to? To hotels, restaurants, gas,
souvenirs, photographers, game officials, taxi drivers, etc.

A NIGHTMARE AT A HIGH SCHOOL MAINSTREAMED CLASS
This is a true story. This is not a joke. A deaf
student in a public high school mainstreamed program
has no speech skills.
Yet, a high school teacher forced him to stand up
in class and to speak out (with voice and without
interpreter) in a classroom discussion!
The stupid teacher immediately realized his mistake,
and told the deaf student he was excused from speaking!

PULLING A PRANK ON A DEAF FARMER
For one reason or other, there are always hearing people
that try to take advantage of the deaf.
Years ago, a deaf farmer was giving orders to oxen
that was to pull a load. The farmer would march on and then
take a peek to make sure the oxen was following him with the load.
A group of neighborhood boys would tell the oxen “whoa”
forcing the animal to stop. The deaf farmer, unaware of the
prank, would walk far ahead and be puzzled why the oxen
didn’t follow him!

THE ACCENT AND THE DEAF
The deaf struggle with regional accents more than the
hearing. A hearing person may hear an accent and may
possibly try to make adjustments with his speech. A deaf
person can’t.
And also, lipreading an accent can be frustrating.
A hearing person may hear an accent but can figure it out.
Accents and the deaf, always frustrating!

Keeping the kitchen organized is important for individuals who are blind or vision impaired.

When you have several people living in the house, it is a challenge!

I once cooked chicken fried rice that was declared an official disaster!

I always kept soy sauce in front on the shelf.

Somehow the Worchester sauce came in front of soy sauce.

You see how important to keep the kitchen cabinet organized.

Anyway, I do not recommend Worcester sauce in chicken fried rice!

DeafHistory:

Fact or legend?

Year 1848 – Bethel, a British ship, sailed towards San
Francisco, its occupants wanting to mine gold during
the Gold Rush days. Something must spooked the ship
that when it arrived in San Francisco Bay, everyone
walked away, never to return. One of the occupants
that walked away was the ship’s cook, who was deaf!

It is not known if the ship was able to sail back
to England or if it sank into the waters of the
Bay.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is seeking American Sign
Language Interpreter for the period April 1—June 18, 2012 to
provide interpretation services between acting company members,
directors and creative personnel, and theatre staff at rehearsals,
technical and dress rehearsals, meetings and for other activities.

The assignment requires:

*  Strong signing and voicing skills
*  Strong understanding of ASL and Deaf culture
*  Understand appropriate roles and individual responsibilities
relating to interpreting for deaf and hard of hearing persons
*  Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of
Professional Conduct
*  Strong understanding of theater culture
*  Flexibility to work within a changing schedule, including

This position’s internal contact is the Associate Producer, Company

Minimum qualifications for this position are:

*  RID certification (CSC, CI, CT, NIC, NIC-Advanced, NIC-Master)
*  Graduate of an ITP or related job experience
*  5 years professional experience; 3 years post-certification
*  Experience working in a theatrical context or organization
*  Experience with Shakespeare or verse drama preferred

Interpreter can expect to work between 25-35 hours per week, at an
hourly pay rate to be negotiated. This position works in OSF’s
rehearsal halls, theatres, meeting rooms, and other spaces. Requires
frequent repetitive hand and arm use. Standing for up to two hours
may be required, as well as climbing stairs and negotiating stages
and scenery. Evening/night and weekend work may be required as
dictated by the rehearsal and production schedule. OSF will provide
housing and round-trip travel for non-local interpreter, and access
to standard complimentary ticket package.

NTID Finance and Budget is a business unit within the college of the
National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT. This department is
charged with the performance and management of the financial
processes associated with the preparation and execution of NTID’s $90
million operating budget.

Assists in all aspects of managing the daily activities of the
College of NTID’s budget, ensuring compliance with policies and
procedures of RIT and NTID, as well as the Department of Education.
In conjunction with the Assistant Vice President, is specifically
responsible for the development, coordination and monitoring of
NTID’s operating budget.

– Develop annual operating budget based on current salary
recommendations, current and new academic and operational
initiatives, and revenue forecasts

– Monitor fiscal performance against plans for accuracy and
completeness, identifying concerns and areas of opportunity. Direct
departmental staff assistants in monitoring and balancing their
budgets and provide technical assistance to that end

– Provide analysis and reporting on performance of NTID’s operating
budget; perform financial analysis for management decision making for
the allocation of resources in current and future operating budgets

– Monitor all charges, direct and indirect, assessed by RIT for
services provided to NTID. Analyze all costs from RIT departments for
accuracy and reasonableness

– Maintain standardized and periodic reporting processes and
operating budget formats that are integrated with RIT?s enterprise
(Oracle) system; provide monthly updates of expenditures versus
plans, revenue forecasts, grant, designated fund and reserve fund
activities. Query the Oracle General Ledger and interpret the data
for use in reporting formats. Disseminate and explain variances

including distributions of F&A returns to NTID departments

The Program Director will supervise and monitor the day to day operations

School for the Deaf.  They are responsible for the supervision of service

communication and liaison with local community groups, schools, service
agencies, and local state offices and courts of the county and stated.

A.      To ensure overall program direction and oversight to program
operations, the Program Director will:

records and files;
2.      Ensure that all program activities and staff practices are in

— A letter by Beethoven in 1823

In 1823, four years before Beethoven died, he wrote letters
asking for money to fund a big musical event, the Missa Solemnis.
It was to be the greatest achievement of his composing career.
There was a problem – Beethoven was broke and couldn’t afford
this new project. So, he wrote letters, asking for money.
One such letter was saved for many years, and it is being
auctioned off now. Auctioneers said this letter is valued
about $131,000! Missa Solemnis? It was a flop, and Beethoven
died, disappointed about it.

 
— Long time deaf employees becoming rare

A newspaper posted a story on Richard Anderson, a deaf
post office employee in Ohio. He is retiring after 41
years at the same job. In the past many deaf employees
spent 40-45 years at same job (factory or newspaper
plant). Not any more. There are layoffs, employer
buy outs, factory closings, etc. If we see a deaf
person employed for 40 years, it is from job to job,
not at one job.

 

— A surprise demand by a mother of 3 deaf children

A hearing mother of 3 deaf children, made a demand that is
surprising. She was attending an election rally in India and
confronted candidate Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, not deaf. She
demanded that that Sodhi give a free house for her and her
3 deaf children!. This shocked candidate immediately
promised her a house, only if he is elected! As we all know,
politicians anywhere in the world, make promises, hoping
to get votes. And that almost all of these promises are
broken.

 
— A deaf carpenter on a reality TV program

Michael Arwood, is deaf and he is a carpenter. He joined
the construction crew that worked on a new home in the
Knoxville, Tennessee area – that will be shown on the
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition TV program. He was recently
interviewed on a local TV news program.

 
— CART eyeglasses in few years?

Lumus, a high tech company, is manufacturing a special
eyeglasses where people can see images in front of them
while walking. Already it is used by jet pilots, surgeons
and military forces. This company is also manufacturing
different designs for movies and video games. What
about the deaf? Lumus could also possibly create
CART eyeglasses. It could be used when a deaf person
talks to a hearing person on the street. The deaf
person would need a small microphone so that the CART
operator will know when to start captioning. Will this
happen? Who knows!

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Many hearing people spend years regretting that they
have never learned signs to communicate with a deaf
family member. John Peter Walsh, Illinois, not deaf, had a deaf brother, Jerry. Like with many hearing people,
John never bothered to learn signs. At age of 38 with
his life at crossroads, John decided to go back to school
and go for masters in Deaf Education – and then he
learned enough signs to be able to comfortably communicate
with Jerry. It became a life defining experience for both
of them.

A legislative bill is coming up in Missouri and many
deaf people are not too happy about it. This bill proposes
to limit to $500,000 plus missed work wages on those
that win job discrimination lawsuits. Many deaf people everywhere, Missouri included, are discriminated in the workplace and wish to file lawsuits. It only makes things more difficult in Missouri – should legislators vote in favor of the bill.

It was always an issue among the deaf of Ghana that
the Mbale School of the Deaf has 200 hearing students.
Finally, the government Ministry of Education has
ordered the school to remove these 200 hearing students.
Why were they admitted in the first place is a mystery
that no one in Ghana was willing to discuss.

In Chinhoyi, a big town in Zimbabwe, there is a problem with
a school for the deaf. Attendance is low. It is because of
lack of resources needed to educate the deaf and because
of shortage of teachers that know sign language.

– Friday January 13th

A team of researchers from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders working together with the National Eye Institute are now saying something interesting
about the Usher syndrome. They are claiming that it is caused
by mutant copies of different genes. But the interesting
thing is that some may cause deafness, and some may cause
Usher syndrome. In other words, these genes do not have the
same impact on some individuals. A recent copy of the
Journal of Medical Genetics carries this article.

– Saturday January 14th

US District Judge Claudia Wilken said that the state of California
is not doing enough to accommodate the needs of the deaf (and
disabled) inmates in local jails. She has accused the prison
officials of seeking excuses, despite a ruling that was made
in prisoners’ favor more than ten years ago.

Deaf Filmmakers were able to get funds in the United Kingdom
for their deaf-oriented films through art councils. This may
stop if the Prime Minister David Cameron has his way. He
wants movies to be commercially feasible. Already the
deaf filmmakers are nervous about this comment.

A RECENT DEAF CONVENTION
A deaf convention took place recently. There were no
laptops, no paging devices, no computers. Many deaf people
spent time in the lobby chatting with each other.

No. The power was out at the hotel. So instead of using

each other.

FALSE SELF-CONGRATULATIONS
Many people with hearing loss deny their deafness. And
what is even worse is when that person is a high ranking
executive of a Fortune 500 corporation.
That person would constantly congratulate himself for
“overcoming” his deafness and that he has “no problems”
communicating with people that work under him.
And the truth was that the deafness of the boss was
no secret among these employees – and they all took
advantage of his deafness for every which opportunity
that took place!

DEAF WORKERS IN THE MINES

It was just learned that in the Philippines, we have at least
five deaf miners. And that the conditions in these Filipino miners

Crossing the street

Crossing the street, if you are Deaf-Blind like me, is scary!

Most of the cities and towns have audible sound signal for individuals who
are blind and can hear.

What about Deaf-Blind?  Very little has been accomplished at this time.

One of the most effective ways to cross the street, is to have a laminated
Deaf-Blind card.

It will say “Help me cross the street, I am Deaf-Blind”  and “Tap me if you
want to help”

There is a picture of a person guiding a blind person in the background.

However, I live in a rural town with no sidewalks and no cross walks or
traffic signals (and no folks to respond to a written plea!)

The best the town can do for me right now is give me a reflective vest, a
less than obvious blind pedestrian sign and their best wishes.

I hope to see you at our next gathering.

Language Interpreter for the period April 1—June 18, 2012 to
provide interpretation services between acting company members,
directors and creative personnel, and theatre staff at rehearsals,
technical and dress rehearsals, meetings and for other activities.

The assignment requires:

*  Strong signing and voicing skills
*  Strong understanding of ASL and Deaf culture
*  Understand appropriate roles and individual responsibilities
relating to interpreting for deaf and hard of hearing persons
*  Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of
Professional Conduct
*  Strong understanding of theater culture
*  Flexibility to work within a changing schedule, including

perspectives and needs

This position’s internal contact is the Associate Producer, Company

Minimum qualifications for this position are:

*  RID certification (CSC, CI, CT, NIC, NIC-Advanced, NIC-Master)
*  Graduate of an ITP or related job experience
*  5 years professional experience; 3 years post-certification
*  Experience working in a theatrical context or organization
*  Experience with Shakespeare or verse drama preferred

Interpreter can expect to work between 25-35 hours per week, at an
hourly pay rate to be negotiated. This position works in OSF’s
rehearsal halls, theatres, meeting rooms, and other spaces. Requires
frequent repetitive hand and arm use. Standing for up to two hours
may be required, as well as climbing stairs and negotiating stages
and scenery. Evening/night and weekend work may be required as
dictated by the rehearsal and production schedule. OSF will provide
housing and round-trip travel for non-local interpreter, and access
to standard complimentary ticket package.

College of NTID’s budget, ensuring compliance with policies and
procedures of RIT and NTID, as well as the Department of Education.
In conjunction with the Assistant Vice President, is specifically
responsible for the development, coordination and monitoring of
NTID’s operating budget.

– Develop annual operating budget based on current salary
recommendations, current and new academic and operational
initiatives, and revenue forecasts

– Monitor fiscal performance against plans for accuracy and
completeness, identifying concerns and areas of opportunity. Direct
departmental staff assistants in monitoring and balancing their
budgets and provide technical assistance to that end

– Provide analysis and reporting on performance of NTID’s operating
budget; perform financial analysis for management decision making for
the allocation of resources in current and future operating budgets

– Monitor all charges, direct and indirect, assessed by RIT for
services provided to NTID. Analyze all costs from RIT departments for
accuracy and reasonableness

– Maintain standardized and periodic reporting processes and
operating budget formats that are integrated with RIT?s enterprise
(Oracle) system; provide monthly updates of expenditures versus
plans, revenue forecasts, grant, designated fund and reserve fund
activities. Query the Oracle General Ledger and interpret the data
for use in reporting formats. Disseminate and explain variances

– Maintain detailed records pertaining to NTID grant activities
including distributions of F&A returns to NTID departments

– Audit NTID departmental expenditures. Provide technical assistance
in interpreting budgeting and accounting policies and procedures.
Assist in formulating spreadsheets and databases to manage
departmental budgets and operations and pertinent details to
constituents

– Intermediate to Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite
products required; experience with Oracle financial applications
preferred

Position Summary
The Program Director will supervise and monitor the day to day operations
of the residential and education services provided at the Pressley Ridge
School for the Deaf.  They are responsible for the supervision of service
delivery, staff, adherence to internal policy as well as external
regulation and licensing requirements, sound fiscal operation, and
communication and liaison with local community groups, schools, service
agencies, and local state offices and courts of the county and stated.

A.      To ensure overall program direction and oversight to program
operations, the Program Director will:

1.      Create and maintain systems for the documentation of all
educational activities and uphold the confidentiality of all program
records and files;
2.      Ensure that all program activities and staff practices are in
compliance with the regulation and in keeping with Department of
Education, DPW and Pressley Ridge policy, values, and standards of
professional and ethical conduct;
3.      Develop and oversee a safety program that addresses the safety and
well-being of staff and consumers in all activities and environments in
which we work.

B.      To ensure solvency through adherence to the PRESSLEY RIDGE

C.      To ensure the maintenance of a full complement of competent and
committed staff/treatment parents to fulfill the mission of the program
and agency, the Program Director will:

1.       Develop and implement effective strategies for recruitment,
screening, selection and hiring of a diverse, qualified workforce;
2.      Develop and implement effective staff development strategies
including targeted training, supervision, succession planning and
professional development programs aimed at enhancing staff competence,
satisfaction and retention;
3.      Maintain effective performance management and evaluation system to
ensure accountability;
4.      Administer an appropriate and equitable compensation program
consistent with agency practices and standards;
5.      Maintain or provide oversight for the maintenance of updated HR
files on every staff.

Special Education and supervisory certification required.

a.      Minimum of five years of experience working with children with
severe emotional and behavioral issues,

– Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Loretta Arrivello,
a much beloved personality in the Philadelphia deaf
community, who departed us. As a long time staffer
with the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, she devoted
her time with the school athletics program. And during
her free time, she did likewise with the deaf community
athletics, especially bowling. Many Facebook postings
expressed deep sorrow at her departure.

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Shirley Lee is a woman of a special distinction;
she is the only deaf psychologist in Jamaica that counsels the deaf in need. She attended University of the West Indies to obtain her degree and her
counseling credentials – despite no support services. She had to do a lot of reading on her own to make up
for what she missed out in the classroom. She has
been in practice since 2004.

Hearing people learn a new language better when
words are associated with gestures or with sign
language. This is what associates at the Max Planck
Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in
Germany are saying. Recently a group of 20 hearing
people took a 6-day crash course at the institute,
learning new words, as helped by signs and gestures.

The Deaf Canadians have massed for a protest rally
over the shutting down of the government-financed
relay center. The trial basis service in operation
for nearly two years in British Columbia and Alberta
are being closed on January 15h. And the deaf people
are not too happy about it.

– Sunday January 8th

Hopefully in that the rest of the nation will follow – the
Maryland Court of Appeals ruled that Maryland must provide
lawyers at bail hearings for defendants that cannot afford
legal fees. For low income deaf defendants, this is good
news.

– Monday January 9th

Evelyn Glennie, a deaf woman, who is the most famous
percussionist, is becoming an actor! She is taking part in
a 3-D movie which focuses on the science of sound. In that announcement, nothing was said about the movie
being captioned. Hope it will.

– Tuesday January 10th

Greece, financially broke, is cutting funds in the national
welfare system, making vulnerable, the deaf that depended
on subsidies for years.

– Wednesday January 11th

Deaf people in China actually dread going out and shopping
for stuff. A big reason for it is rudeness from the clerks
and retailers. They just do not like to communicate with the
deaf. This story was written up in China Daily.

COULD DEAF OWNED BUSINESSES AVOID THE FINANCIAL NETWORK?
There was a posting on a blog – which suggested that
deaf owned businesses band together to create their
own deaf-only financial network, thus bypassing the
conventional financial network.
Barter was pointed out as an example that deaf owned
business could do. Example is that a deaf owned barber
shop can cut hair of a deaf businessman, and in exchange
get his car fixed at no charge – an even-up trade.
Well, DeafDigest ran a post way back in 1998. It said:

A deaf business owner said he made a few bartering
deals, but his accountant put a stop to it, saying
value of trade must be translated into actual dollars.

OSL AND OUR ASL
What is OSL? It is the Occupiers Sign Language, that
grew out of these Occupy movements that swept USA
in past months.
Two examples of OSL:

– arms X-crossed in front means to physically oppose
– waving hands means the same as ours – applauding

A FRANCHISE CRITERIA IN MALAYSIA
Last week’s DeafDigest mentioned a deaf-owned, all-deaf,
and deaf-operated cafe in Malaysia.
The parent company chairperson, which helps franchise the
local cafe outlets said:

One of our criteria is that the franchise owner must be deaf. A limit of one outlet to one owner is another condition, and all outlets have to be run by the owners themselves. You tell me, which franchise concept puts down such restrictions?

Great and interesting – but just one question – why a limit
of one outlet per owner? In USA we have many McDonald’s outlets
owned by just one person. So, why restrict the movements of
ambitious deaf businesspeople?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

“There were a lot of mistakes in the captioning of a television
program I watched.  Should I make a complaint about it?”

One of the first things you need to consider when evaluating
captioning on television is if it is realtime captioning, meaning it
is being done “live,” or if it is offline or post-production
captioning, meaning that the program is prerecorded.

If the program is prerecorded, the captioning should be close to
99.9% correct.  If you are watching a prerecorded television show and
you see mistakes in the captioning, please contact your cable or
satellite TV service and/or the television station directly.  In
order to get better quality captioning, we have to let the people who
are responsible know that someone is watching the captioning and that
the quality of the captioning is important to us.

If the program is being broadcast “live” and the captioning is being
done in realtime, a few mistakes are to be expected.  Even the very
best captioners make some mistakes.  However, if there are many
mistakes or if it is hard to understand the captioning because of
numerous inaccuracies, it is also important that you contact the
service provider.

Sometimes we just change the channel when we are watching poor
captioning.  If we do not make a complaint, the people in charge may
not know that they are losing viewers because of bad captioning.  It
is important that caption viewers become advocates for better quality
captioning.

JAFFE VS MATALIN – A LIPREADING MYSTERY
Mr. Jaffe (forgot his first name) taught math at the
high school (no interpreters) that DeafDigest editor
attended as a teenager.
Jaffe was so easy to lipread. His lip movements were
natural and he used the same lip movements no matter if he
was talking to a hearing person or to a deaf person.
It was as if he was teaching a class of deaf kids at
47 School for the Deaf, an oral school in New York City.
These teachers altered their lip movements to accommodate
the deaf. But away from the deaf, they spoke with different
lip movements. Not Jaffe, his movements were the same.
Now let us talk about Mary Matalin (she of the famous
Matalin-James Carville political marriage). She is a
featured speaker on some TV talk shows. Lipreading her
is an exercise in torture. She just does not move her lips at all.
Why are some hearing people so easy to lipread? Why are
many hearing people so impossible to lipread?
Always a mystery!

A victory or a defeat? It is being debated on heels of
the recent Supreme Court ruling narrowing the role employers
could deal with employees afflicted with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Some are saying it is a win for the employers and employees.
Others say it is a defeat for both employers and employees!
Well, how would this apply to sign language interpreters
that suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This question was
asked of a veteran administrator of programs for the deaf –
and the answer was “do not really know.”

The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford, Connecticut.  The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school

Under the supervision of the Jr.Sr. High school and CATS principal, instructs students in PrintWorks, to include Academics, Deaf with Special Needs (DSN)  PACES students and Adult Vocational Students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Associates Degree.  Prefer Bachelors Degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or Vocational Area with ability to secure State of CT Voc-Tech Teacher Certification (098 Endorsement).  Background or work experience in graphic design and printing preferred.  Excellent skills in American Sign Language. Ability to work in a collaborative setting.  Ability to work flexible hours when needed.

Position Summary
The Program Director will supervise and monitor the day to day operations of the residential and education services provided at the Pressley Ridge School for the Deaf.  They are responsible for the supervision of service delivery, staff, adherence to internal policy as well as external regulation and licensing requirements, sound fiscal operation, and communication and liaison with local community groups, schools, service agencies, and local state offices and courts of the county and stated.

A.    To ensure overall program direction and oversight to program operations, the Program Director will:

1.    Create and maintain systems for the documentation of all educational activities and uphold the confidentiality of all program records and files;
2.    Ensure that all program activities and staff practices are in compliance with the regulation and in keeping with Department of Education, DPW and Pressley Ridge policy, values, and standards of professional and ethical conduct;
3.    Develop and oversee a safety program that addresses the safety and well-being of staff and consumers in all activities and environments in which we work.

B.    To ensure solvency through adherence to the PRESSLEY RIDGE budgetary process, maximizing staff productivity and system efficiencies, and effectively using agency resources in pursuit of program goals, the Program Director will:

1.    Develop, implement and live within the program budget;
2.    Manage buildings and grounds, vehicles and equipment, and PRESSLEY RIDGE property and supplies in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE standards:
3.    Develop and manage systems for the efficient utilization of workforce by establishing staffing patterns, job designs, work schedules, and performance and productivity standards in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE values and standards;
4.    Oversee the development of educational costs and revenues, (per diems, etc.);
5.    Review and approve travel and receipt requests;
6.    Establish capital budget request.

C.    To ensure the maintenance of a full complement of competent and committed staff/treatment parents to fulfill the mission of the program and agency, the Program Director will:

1.     Develop and implement effective strategies for recruitment, screening, selection and hiring of a diverse, qualified workforce;
2.    Develop and implement effective staff development strategies including targeted training, supervision, succession planning and professional development programs aimed at enhancing staff competence, satisfaction and retention;
3.    Maintain effective performance management and evaluation system to ensure accountability;
4.    Administer an appropriate and equitable compensation program consistent with agency practices and standards;
5.    Maintain or provide oversight for the maintenance of updated HR files on every staff.
Essential Qualifications

1.    Education/Credentials/Licensure.  Master’s Degree in Education, Special Education and supervisory certification required.
2.    Experience. a.    Minimum of five years of experience working with children with severe emotional and behavioral issues,
b.    Working knowledge of the regulations and guidelines of Pennsylvania Department of Education, DPW, OMHSA as related to Approved Private School and Partial Hospital regulations
c.    Knowledge and experience in working in an educational setting utilizing strength based approaches to interventions with seriously troubled youth and their families.
d.    Understanding, commitment to and integration of the Pressley Ridge Values.  CASSP Principles and Re-Ed Program Directors
e.    Ability to work with other disciplines as part of the team.
f.    Knowledge of an a commitment to culturally competent service delivery

— Was Alexander Graham Bell really a bad person?

Many people hate Alexander Graham Bell for two
reasons; he supported oralism; he thought deaf
people should not marry each other. Yet, he had
a brillant mind with many ideas – the phonograph,
boating technology, taking salt out of seawater,
the National Geographic Magazine, etc, etc.
This is the reason why he and Thomas Edison,
the famous deaf inventor, hated each other
(jealousy). And remember, his telephone made TTY
possible many years later.
 

 

— A deaf soccer player thrown out of game for not
obeying the whistle!

Philip John Dolan is a deaf member of a hearing
soccer team in Scotland. In a game last week, he
thought he scored a goal and jumped up, happy.
The referee blew the whistle just before the score.
Philip, not knowing the whistle, still jumped around.
The angry referee threw him out of the game. The team
did warn the referee, before the game, that Philip
was deaf. But the referee ignored it. The team is
filing a protest with the league headquarters. The
referee refused to answer questions from a newspaper.

 

— a 86-year old deaf woman got a letter telling her
of her apartment eviction on Christmas Day

A 86-year old deaf woman received a letter from the
Toronto Community Housing Authority (TCHA). It told her
she would be evicted from her apartment on Christmas Day!
Her angry neigbhors accused TCHA of being cruel to
her and violating her human rights. TCHA backed off and
allowed her to stay. And the Canadian Hearing Society
stepped in, trying to resolve this issue.

 
 

— A deaf woman wins a TV reality show contest

Chivonne Chapman, who is deaf, with husband Adam, not
deaf, competed against three other hearing couples on
the popular British TV reality show – Four Weddings.
They won the top prize, a free honeymoon. As with other
reality shows, these participants vote on several
questions. Chivonne said that Adam helped the win the
contest because he learned enough signs to improve his
communications with her. Does it look fishy? (How did
he communicate with her while they were dating?)

 

— Cost of captioned commercials during the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is Big Time business. A 30-second commercial
cost is $3.5 million dollars, sometimes $4.0 million
dollars. Many commercials are not captioned. Why? The
TV people say captioning is “very” expensive. Truth is
that captioning work is about $125.00 for each 30-second
commercial. The TV people are trying to fool us by saying
they go broke on money spent on captioned commercials!
