Al Van Nevel graduated from Gallaudet in 1964 and embarked on a lifelong
career in the insurance field. He holds two unusual distictions. With the
insurance field – he was involved in a grand slam – founding a new insurance
company, buying an existing insurance company, selling an insurance company
and closing off an insurance company. The second unusual distinction was
that he was offered a job, teaching accounting at National Technical
Institute of the Deaf; instead of immediately accepting the position – he
wanted the opportunity to each accounting to hearing students at NTID’s
parent college – Rochester Institute of Technology. They wanted him to teach
the deaf not to teach the hearing and as result, the offer was rescinded!
