News of the Week:

The Gallaudet football team defeated Castleton
49-18 today and is off to to a 2-2 record.

.

Last week DeafDigest mentioned HR 3200, a
bill on Capitol Hill, which would give doctors
the authority to make infant hearing decisions,
meaing forcing CI on them, and that there is a
struggle between pro-CI and anti-CI factions.
Well, what about it? DeafDigest does not
recommend HR 3200 as a bed time reading material.
Why? This bill is over 1,000 pages. Complained
Rep. Bill Posey, R-FL:

it takes congressmen few days to read and to
understand what CI and deafness is all about

..

Surprised is the reaction on the announcement
that 9 disabled community representatives met up
with Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder last
month.
Not surprised that there was a meeting; surprised
that just ONE representative from the deaf
community was at the meeting. That sole representative,
on behalf of the NAD is Jeff Rosen.
The deaf community is so diverse; we need
viewpoints from other sectors - oral, hard of hearing,
late deafened, and so on. The deaf (ASL) is just one
of these deafness-related sectors.
Anyway the meeting focused on how would Holder's office
enforce our rights and needs.

..

If you appreciate photography (and also like
sports), do pick up a copy of the September 28th
edition of Sports Illustrated.
There is a two-page spread of California
football player Jahvid Best. He is not deaf.
What about it? The photographer who took the picture
is Michael Pimentel. He is deaf.

..

Lawsuits tend to drag on endlessly in the court
system. It was not too long time ago when Ohio State
University was sued for not providing captions on
its video boards and on TV sets in the concourse
area.
Well, instead of defending itself, the university
immediately hired a captioning company to start
captions, effective immediately.
DeafDigest is not sure what has become of the
filed lawsuit?

WAITING IN A BUSY RESTAURANT
A DeafDigest subscriber, when entering a busy restaurant,
always gives his name as "deaf" on the sign up chart.
When the "deaf" name comes up, the hostess knows it is
a deaf person and will tell him that his table is ready.
He was afraid that if he gave the hostess his name,
he may overlook the lipreading when the hostess shouts
the name.

Every year 6,000 new words join the
Japanese dictionary.
This means the average of 16 or 17 new words
per day.
Do the deaf in Japan invent new signs for these
new words every day?

STARTLED BY A DISCARDED MAGAZINE
DeafDigest editor was walking in downtown Washington,
DC when he spotted a discarded magazine on a park bench.
The magazine was titled "Wisconsin Silent Sports"
thus startling DeafDigest editor.
Thinking it may be deaf-related sports in the state of
Wisconsin, he picked up the copy and read it. This
magazine has nothing to do with the deaf; it focuses
on running, cycling, and other outdoor activities.
But why the word "silent"? And by the way, there
is an organization in Wisconsin - Wisconsin Deaf Sports
Club.

REGIONAL PROGRAMS FOR THE DEAF
Many states have regional programs for the deaf.
Not all regional programs are the same.
Said a retired educator of the deaf:

Philosophies differ from school to school; some schools
believe in using ASL or conceptually accurate sign English,
whereas other schools believe in using SEE signs. And if
both schools are within the same region, then both will
have nothing to do with each other

   Very sad!

DEAF HISTORIANS' BIGGEST REGRET
We have some deaf people very interested in Deaf
History.
What is their biggest regret? That they never had
a chance to interview older deaf individuals on
certain subjects. And when they depart us, their
pieces of Deaf History are gone forever!

DEAF NOISE AND HEARING NOISE

   Noise is noise; Deaf Noise or Hearing Noise;
no difference.
There was a story a while back of a deaf club
in Great Britain denied license for evening
entertainment on grounds of noise.
The story did not say if other hearing clubs
in the same British neighborhood were granted
(or denied) the entertainment license?
Makes DeafDigest wonder if there is a difference
between Deaf Noise and Hearing Noise?

DEAF ISSUES

(short series; based on comments by educators
and deaf service professionals)

these counselors for the deaf, with no guidelines
to work with, often make decisions that may not
be in the best interests of their deaf students

(series to continue until it runs out)

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked:

how long have you known your deaf client?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
<a href="http://rademacher.org/webmail/src/compose.php?send_to=barry@deafdigest.com">mailto:barry@deafdigest.com</a>

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

One of the most important pieces of equipment that every
stenocaptioner or steno CART provider owns is a steno
machine.

The machines that captioners and CART providers use are
the same machines that court reporters use.

Most people have seen pictures or videos of a court
reporter's machine on TV or in the movies. You probably
have seen paper coming out that may look like adding
machine tape to some people.

New steno machines may or may not use paper. All the
steno note information can now be stored electronically.

Captioners and CART providers really have no need for the
paper notes, but some court reporters still insist on
having the paper notes to maintain as their permanent
record.

Captioners may have the same sorts of feelings about
their steno machines as other people have about their
cars.

Some people upgrade every couple of years and want the
latest and greatest with all the bells and whistles, while
others keep theirs for years and just hate to part with
them even when they have "lots of miles" on them.

HEALTH AND ADVOCACY INFORMATION
FOR PERSON WHO ARE DEAF, DEAF-BLIND, AND HARD OF HEARING:

Persons who are Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing are
grossly underserved by both the physical health and the
behavioral health care system. In many cases, the patient
as well as the health care provider who may provide service
to them, is unaware of laws that mandate the provision of
accommodations in the health care setting so that all
persons have equal access to health related information.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The DEAFDIGEST dedicates this issue in memory of
Ernest Marshall, Bronx, NY, a pioneering deaf film
maker who passed away at the age of 89.
A house painter by vocation, but by avocation he
was many things and much more - a film maker, an
entertainer, a raconteur, a loyal deaf club member,
and what have you.
A colorful character, Ernest epitomized what deaf
culture was all about - these Friday and Saturday
night gatherings at various New York deaf social clubs.
Despite never holding a driver's license he rode the
subway - a long ride from Bronx to the Long Island
Club of the Deaf in Queens for his weekly chore
as projectionist of Friday night captioned movies.
He retired from this chore after featuring the 1000th
film.
He harbored a life-long regret - never being able
to attend Gallaudet University. He wanted to, and he
was academically able, but unfortunately family money
just wasn't there in the depression years.
He served as a School of Hard Knocks mentor to
the DEAFDIGEST editor way back in the early sixties.
Thank you very much, Ernest for your huge
contributions to the Deaf Culture.

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Rochester is one up on all of us as far as Deaf
Awareness Week is concerned.
For one day earlier this week, Steve DeBottis,
a deaf resident of Rochester, co-anchored a local TV
news program in sign language with the interpreter
voicing out his signs.
It was not a five-minute session as was the way
during the seventies when we were exposed to these
quickie sign language news programs. It was an
all day session.
Steve must have come home that night pretty much
exhausted but with the mission very well accomplished.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

For some reason some bands, especially those in
Great Britain, would name themselves Deaf with some
other name.
An example would be Deaf School. The members of
these "deaf" bands are not deaf; perhaps it is a way
of conveying the message that their rock music is
so loud it renders everyone deaf.
Anyway, with reference to the Deaf School band,
a newspaper story said it has "35 years of
invention."
One would read the headline and think Deaf
School has come up with great innovations in the
education of the deaf for the past 35 years.
But no, it is 35 years of musical innovations.

News of the Week:
Trying not to be a mouthful with SSDHHC
(Scranton State School for Deaf and Hard of
Hearing Children), superintendent Don Rhoten
is simply referring it as The Scranton School.
After a summer of much activity at the
original Scranton State School for the Deaf,
closed by the state but reorganized under
the auspices of Western Pennsylvania School
for the Deaf, he has this to say:

We started with 78 students and 4 more are
on the way; 13 families are in our parent-
infant program. Also I have to say that our
staff have been incredible in creating this
new school, working on this 24/7 since
June. But the looks on faces of the Scranton
students on the first day of school made all
efforts worthwhile. And we are thrilled so
many students returned after the turmoil.
I heard rumors of mass departures but it
didn't happen.

Don now splits his time between Pittsburgh
and Scranton, supervising both schools.

..

From time to time, reporters from mass media
(Washington Post, Washington City Paper, USA Today,
ESPN, and other local newspapers, have contacted
DeafDigest for questions on deaf-related issues.
Well, USA Today ran a piece on deaf athletes
on college teams, and mentioned DeafDigest as
the source. Almost instantly, DeafDigest was
also mentioned in the CEC news sweep-Council
for Exceptional Children (the very large North
American professional special education
organization).
To read the story, it is at:

<a href="http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2009-09-15-deaf-athletes_N.htm?csp=34" target="_blank">http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2009-09-15-deaf-athletes_N.htm?csp=34</a>

..

The Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard
of Hearing, which had been without executive
director, finally found one.
It is Virginia L. Moore, who simply moves up
from deputy executive director.
The last executive director was Bobbie Beth
Scoggins, who now works for CSD.

..

An announcement posted by University of
Wisconsin at Eau Claire is curious.
   It went like this -

A presentation by astronomy professor Lauren Likkel:
Deaf Astronomers and Their Research on Variable Stars

(this session took place earlier in the week)

We have a list of prominent deaf astronomers:
<a href="http://sci.gallaudet.edu/DS/deafsciF.html#ast" target="_blank">http://sci.gallaudet.edu/DS/deafsciF.html#ast</a>

DeafDigest is not sure if the presentation has
focused on past deaf astronomers or if it is focused
on current deaf astronomers (DeafDigest does not know
of any).

ACTING IS DANGEROUS
Is acting more dangerous than football? Many deaf actors
go to hospitals because of broken foot, leg infection,
bad shoulder, muscle pulls, etc.
   Said a former deaf actor:

our deaf actors visit hospital emergency rooms often

ATTITUDE OF AUDIOLOGISTS
We have many audiologists that are good and
respect their deaf patients.
We also have some audiologists that have bad
attitude and treat deaf patients badly!
A subscriber told DeafDigest editor that he went
to seven different audiologists and all of them
had bad attitudes.
   Hard to believe!

NOT WISE TO HIRE LOW COST INTERPRETERS
A college hired an interpreter for a deaf awareness
class. The interpreter was not certified by the RID;
he was a school teacher, moonlighting as an interpreter
during his free moments.
The rationale was that a moonlighting interpreter
was much cheaper than a RID-certified interpreter.
Good idea? No way! The class was a disaster, and
the lecturer, who knew sign language often had to
interrupt the interpreter to clean up his errors!

HEARING TEMPERS, DEAF TEMPERS
Within one week, we have witnessed:

- Kanye West's bad behavior
- Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst
- Serena Williams' loud arguing

Can't happen to the deaf. Wrong! It has
happened to the deaf. Leaving out specifics
to spare embarrassment, DeafDigest editor
has witnessed:

- a deaf board member of a national organization
losing his temper on being bypassed for a prize

- a CEO of a national organization berating
a deaf volunteer in front of everyone

- a deaf board member throwing a chair at a
CEO of a national organization

Hearing tempers. Deaf tempers. Not good!

A DEAF TENNIS OFFICIAL COULD HAVE TAMED SERENA WILLIAMS
Still continuing with the topic of tempers (see
story above the UnitedTTY ad), a deaf tennis official
could have tamed Serena Williams!
Taming Serena Williams? Yes, Michael Baruch, could.
He is deaf, a graduate from NTID/RIT, and has been
officiating tennis matches for 23 years. In fact he
spent this week officiating a pro tennis tournament
in Tulsa.
He seems to be the only deaf tennis official that
DeafDigest knows of.
He has done US Open, Canadian Open and other big
tournaments in the past. Not any more as he prefers
to focus on smaller, lower level junior, collegiate
and professional tournaments.
   Two questions.

Q. Have any tennis players blown up at him?
A. Yes, in foreign languages!

Q. Did he play tennis at NTID/RIT?
A. No, but he is a late bloomer to this sport!

REALISTIC OR UNREALISTIC JOB AMBITIONS
DeafDigest editor recently made the acquaintance
of a deaf person that earned a MBA in marketing.
Is that deaf person employed in the marketing
field?
No, that deaf person works with computers. This
makes DeafDigest editor wonder if certain job
aspirations could be unrealistic?
Yes, we all know this adage - the deaf could
do anything except to hear.

DEAF ISSUES

(short series; based on comments by educators
and deaf service professionals)

when counselors get involved with the lives
of their deaf students, it creates the impression
that it is all what counselors of the deaf do
because counselors of hearing students do not
get involved with their lives

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

When you are working with a CART provider in a classroom,
one thing you need to remember is that CART providers do
not know everything about all subjects.

They don't have the knowledge of the instructor about the
subject.

All of the unusual terms, words, and names that come up in
a class need to be added to a CART provider's computer
dictionary in order for them to translate properly.

If CART providers are unfamiliar with names or terms, they
may attempt to fingerspell them, but if the CART provider
doesn't know how the words are spelled, the words will
probably not come up on the screen correctly.

When handouts are being passed out in a class, sometimes
the CART provider is skipped, almost as if everyone just
assumes that the CART provider already knows everything
about the course.

The CART provider needs access to the same information as
the students because sometimes he or she is learning
right along with the students.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Hard of hearing theatrical lovers of
Edinburg, Scotland, may be out of luck when
attending shows.
It was learned that a low percentage of
theaters are outfitted with induction loops
that would allow their hearing aids to pick
up stuff that is said on the stage.

..

The Deaf and the Law

If a deaf husband and deaf wife go through mediation
in a divorce case, make sure interpreters are provided.

In one case, the husband signed papers to waive his
rights to an interpreter, whereas the wife refused
to sign papers. The court would not provide interpreters
for a mediation case but only for criminal cases.

The ruling in the mediation case (without interpreters)
went against both of them.

The wife, not giving up, hired an attorney to reverse
the mediator's decision in that case.

Bottom line - do not sign papers, but to hire an attorney
if the courts refuse your request for an interpreter.

..

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

A college refused to provide CART services for a deaf student.

The college argued that ADA does not require CART if a
reasonable alternative is offered.

Reasonable alternatives the college suggested was
volunteer note takers and volunteer interpreters!

Additionally the college argued the student was already
getting good grades on classes without CART in the past.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

no right to life.

News of the Week

   Interestingly enough with Deaflympics coming
up soon, do read this News of the Week that
was posted two years ago!

(from two years ago)

Still on the same topic re deafness being
viewed differently in Asia, the mayor of
Taipei City in Taiwan is implying that we,
the deaf, are not normal.
The mayor gave the opening speech at the
World Deaf Swimming Championships. He said:

that this swimming championship is different
from other games only normal people can
participate in

Well, Jeff Float and Terence Parkin,
these two famous deaf swimmers, have won
medals at past Olympics. According to the
mayor, these two elite-level swimmers
are not normal!

..

If deaf kids at Lexington School for the
Deaf cover their ears, it is for a good
reason.
   The Jackson Heights, NY neighborhood,
where the school is located, is having issues
with the city regarding trucks that roar
through the streets, designed to handle
heavy traffic.
This issue was brought up in a recent
newspaper story.

..

The National Council on Disability (NCD)
wants to hear from us, the deaf, on future
issues of concern.
   Our issues, and other disabilility-related
issues will be compiled in a report that will
be given to the President and Congress.

..

Attention:

Deaf &amp; Hard of Hearing Current or Former United Parcel
Service, Inc (UPS) employees

If you use sign language, worked for UPS or applied for
a driving position at UPS at any time since June 25, 1997,
please read the announcement posted in the Blue edition.

There is a proposed final settlement in a class action
lawsuit brought on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing
current and former UPS employees and applicants for driving
positions who failed or would fail the hearing standard
established by DOT for drivers of commercial motor vehicles.

SUBSTITUTE ORAL SCHOOL TEACHERS
All schools have a list of their own substitute teachers.
DeafDigest editor remembers his young days at 47 School for
the Deaf in New York City. It was an oral school, ASL was not
permitted.
All of the regular teachers could be lipreadable. That was
no problem in the classroom.
The problem was with the substitute teachers. Many of these
subs were impossible to lipread!
We suffered in the classroom when the regular teachers were
absent and substitutes hired to replace them for the day.
47 School for the Deaf has been ASL for the past 25 years.

HOLLYWOOD CAMERA PEOPLE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE DEAF
In some movies that involve deaf characters, we often
see deaf actors without their hands. These cameras
focus on deaf faces and deaf bodies but not deaf hands.
This is not good - because without deaf hands we
can't see them signing!
Does it mean Hollywood camera people know nothing
about the deaf?

THE NORTH POLE FIRST AND ONLY DEAF?
Oliver Westbury, a deaf Briton, reached the North
Pole on foot in April 2008.
He said he was the first and the only deaf person
to reach North Pole.
The first? The only? North Pole, once thought to be
inaccessible, has been more and more accessible in
recent years.
Do we know if Westbury was the first (and the only)
deaf person or if there were other deaf persons that
we know nothing about?

DEALING WITH LATE-DEAFENED EMPLOYEES
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People
(Great Britain) came up with a report.
It said that majority of British employers are not
prepared to deal with late deafness among their older
employees.
This is sad, if this is true.

A PERFECT QUOTE
We are waiting for the announcement of the new
Gallaudet president. Also, the NAD will be seeking a
new CEO.
Joel Trachtenberg, not deaf, was a former president
of George Washington University, located in Washington,
DC.
   He said:

being president of a university is no way for an
adult to make a living

This quote also applies to the NAD!

TAKING THE CLUNKER HIT
A certain hearing aid dealer has taken a hint from
the "Cash for Clunkers" program. This dealers is offering
a rebate in exchange for an old hearing aid. The rebate
is to be applied towards a newer, and more modern,
hearing aid.

HEARING AID VS CI (SHORT SERIES)

A Hearing Aid vs a CI, who wins?

A hearing aid wins at the start, but at the end of
the race, the CI wins!

TALES FROM FORMER DEAF PIZZA DRIVERS

(series to be run on a weekly basis until list of
tales run out)

I delivered pizzas on the side while attending
NTID/RIT.

I made good money on tips; I was aware that deaf
customers do not tip that well, or at all. What
I did was to educate them on the need to pay tips
since I needed money to pay for my college
education. I would charge them $12.00 for a $10.00
pizza and they all paid up with no questions!

This pay-up tip trick worked well.

If you are a former Deaf Pizza Driver and have an
interesting tale, please share it with:

News of the Week:

   DeafDigest dedicates this edition to
Walter R. Bloomquist Sr, who departed us. A
graduate of Rochester School for the Deaf, he
relocated to California and owned two printing
shops, the Ken-Ton Printing Company and then
the Bloomquist Printing Co.
DeafDigest always admires deaf individuals that
are able to operate businesses, and Bloomquist
is one of them.

..

Nancy J. Bloch, the NAD CEO, will be stepping down
from her position on March 31, 2011. By then she will
have served for 19 years, which is unusually long
for a CEO position anywhere.
The challenge facing the NAD board of directors
is the same as the challenge facing the Gallaudet
board of trustees - to find someone that will
skillfully steer the ship through rocky waters.
Some CEOs can do the job, some CEOs can't.

..

The producers of the planned movie "Hamill"
have been scouting the campus of the Rochester
School for the Deaf. They want to see if the
campus is the right fit for some scenes in the
movie.
No, Hamill never attended Rochester School
for the Deaf, but we all know what Hollywood
is all about.
Matt Hamill is a ranking contender in the
Ultimate Fighter ranks and while wrestling
at RIT, he achieved an unusual feat - winning
three NCAA championships in three different
weight classes in three different years!

..

South Carolina is probably the Mecca for
golfers, as this state has many, many golf
courses.
If you are planning to golf at South
Carolina, then maybe stopping at the
Dataw Island Club would be a good idea.
The assistant pro at this course is
Heather Weil.
She is deaf. DeafDigest, however, is not
sure if she can sign.

..

Attention:

Deaf &amp; Hard of Hearing Current or Former United Parcel
Service, Inc (UPS) employees

If you use sign language, worked for UPS or applied for
a driving position at UPS at any time since June 25, 1997,
please read the announcement posted below in this edition.

There is a proposed final settlement in a class action
lawsuit brought on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing
current and former UPS employees and applicants for driving
positions who failed or would fail the hearing standard
established by DOT for drivers of commercial motor vehicles.

OF OR FOR OR WITH?
Many deaf people argue about this issue - "for" or
"of" in a name of a deaf organization - such as
National Association of the Deaf or National Association
for the Deaf.
What about "with"? Some years back there was a new group
that called itself:

Northern Michigan Association with the Deaf

TIME NEEDED TO LEARN FULL ASL
If a hearing person was with a deaf group
all day for five months without using voice and
without being with hearing people, will he become
an ASL expert?
Five months? Well, a hearing person wanted to
speak perfect Spanish. He went to a small town in
Mexico for five months and did not speak English
for five months. After 5 months he spoke good
Spanish.
   ASL-learning, Spanish-learning - same thing??

SUBTITLES ALSO FOR HEARING
The BBC, in Great Britain, is featuring a TV series
titled "The Wire" which is a series of drama based
in Baltimore.
A deaf person would turn on the subtitles in order
to understand the plot.
A hearing person would also turn on the subtitles,
but for a different reason. The dialogue, based on
Baltimore street talk, has become so difficult for
the average hearing person to understand. The subtitles,
as turned on, helps the hearing person follow the plots.
Subtitles for the deaf; subtitles for the hearing,
two different reasons!

A DEAF PERSON IN THE GEOPHYSICS FIELD
What is geophysicist? Too complex to explain, but in
short, it means study of earth sciences (earthquakes,
oil fossils, shifting of land mass, etc).
And do we have a deaf person in the geophysics field?
There is one - Kyle Sterry, a Briton, who has been at
this field for years.
And like with other deaf scientists and engineers,
he had to deal with resistance and barriers because
of his deafness at the work place.

ATTENTION DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
Current or Former United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) employees

Read this notice if you use sign language, worked for UPS or
applied for a driving position at UPS at any time since June 25, 2997,
and failed or would fail the hearing standard established by the
Department of Transportation (DOT)

FOR DRIVERS OF COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLES

The purpose of this notice is to inform you of a proposed final
settlement in a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of deaf and hard
of hearing current and former United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS)
employees and applicants for driving positions who use sign language as
a primary means of communication due to hearing loss or limitation and
who failed or would fail the hearing standard established by the DOT
for drivers of commercial motor vehicles.

The class action settlement, which must be approved by the Court, was
reached in connection with a lawsuit, Bates v. UPS, N.D. Cal. Case No.
C99-2216 TEH.

The lawsuit, which was filed in 1999, alleges that UPS engaged in
discrimination in violation of the federal Americans with Disabilities
Act and various California laws, by requiring all drivers and driver
applicants for positions involving driving UPS delivery vehicles on
the public roads to pass the DOT hearing standard for drivers
of commercial motor vehicles ("Driving Claims").

UPS has denied any liability or wrongdoing.

If you are a current employee of UPS, or you were employed by UPS or
applied for a driving position at UPS at any time beginning June 25,
1997, use sign language as a primary means of non-written communication
due to a hearing loss or limitation, and failed or would fail the
hearing standard established by DOT for drivers of commercial motor
vehicles, you may be a member of the class affected by this lawsuit
and entitled to object to the proposed settlement.

The proposed settlement Agreement is available on-line at
<a href="http://www.dralegal.org/" target="_blank">http://www.dralegal.org</a> . If you would like additional information
about this lawsuit and the settlement, including a copy of the
Settlement Agreement, you can also contact Class Counsel at:

A SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
A newspaper story posted on a web site mentioned
"Wa School for the Deaf".
DeafDigest editor stared at the name of the school,
confused about it.
It was a Ghanaian newspaper and why would it mention
"Wa School for the Deaf"? It was as if it was in reference
to the Washington School for the Deaf in Vancouver, WA
with Wa abbreviated as Washington.
But it was realized that Wa School for the Deaf
is in Ghana whereas WA (or Washington) School for the
Deaf is in Vancouver, Washington.

DEAF ISSUES

(short series; based on comments by educators
and deaf service professionals)

Most of the deaf education majors do not realize the
realities of teaching the deaf in the classroom

(series to continue until it runs out)

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked by someone in the audience:

are you deaf or hearing?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
<a href="http://rademacher.org/webmail/src/compose.php?send_to=barry@deafdigest.com">mailto:barry@deafdigest.com</a>

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As the new school year begins, many CART providers will find
themselves working in college classrooms throughout the
country.

People have asked if these CART providers are eligible to
receive college credit for the classes where they provide
realtime.

Unfortunately, CART providers cannot participate in the
class. They are there to provide a service. It would be
against the professional ethics of the National Court Reporters
Association to be an active participant in the class and to
provide the services of a CART provider.

According to Article VIII of the NCRA CART Consumer Bill of
Rights, which is "Staying in Role," "ART consumers have a
right to expect CART providers to refrain from commenting,
interjecting, advising, or in any way becoming involved in
the assignment outside the role of communication access."

CART providers review the class materials to enter terms
and proper names for the course into their computerized
dictionaries, but they don' have to take the tests or
do the homework.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The police officer, who used his Taser to
restrain a deaf man who stayed in the bathroom
too long in a store in Alabama, was
disciplined for this incident.
His superior said the deaf man should have
been taken home to the care of his parents
instead of being arrested.
The judge, by the way, would not sign off
on arrest papers, and the case was quickly
dismissed.

..

The Deaf and the Law

In 2000, "The Replacements" movie was produced.
It was a football comedy. One of the actors in the
movie portrayed a deaf football player, played by
a hearing actor.
Gallaudet was mentioned in a dialogue - which said
that he could have played pro football, if not for
his deafness.
Did Gallaudet University lose out on its monetary
interests because of the sole dialogue that mentioned
Gallaudet?
More and more universities are hiring agencies to
oversee its rights and interests for that reason
only.
It is a complex issue that only attorneys can
deal with.

..

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

A bookstore in Washington, DC posted this sign,
which said:

Please ask if you have difficulty in our store because of a
special need, please ask any employee for assistance.

Would this imply that if a deaf person entered the
store he would have the right to request an interpreter
because of a special need?

This is for the attorneys and the courts to figure
this one out!

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Last week's DEAFDIGEST mentioned that Greg Livadas
covered the deaf beat for the Rochester Democrat &amp;
Chronicle newspaper.
Well, Greg was the most surprised person around when
the RID, at its recent convention in Boston, bestowed
a honorary membership on him. He was in Boston to cover
the convention for his newspaper and his articles about
the deaf were duly noted by the RID.
   Congrats, Greg!

(editor's note: Greg is now at NTID)

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Sen. Tom Harkin, whose brother was deaf, is considered to be our
best friend on the Capitol Hill.
Harkin, however, has a penchant for getting himself on newspaper
front pages because of his comments on political issues.
Writer James M. Perry, not deaf, has accused Harkin of stretching
the truth on a given issue - saying that reporters have been
mislead about the troubles of his deaf brother.

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Why is it that when a clueless hearing employee is told of his
associate's deafness, he is prompted to talk faster and faster,
making his unlipreadable lips even more unlipreadable?

Panic attack? Possibly!
