Top stories about the deaf:

A deaf child was not able to find a school in Ohio
because two school districts refused to accept
him. For some reason Ohio School for the Deaf
was not mentioned as an option!

The government of the Philippines is cracking down
on TV networks that have been dragging their
feet re captioning of TV programs for the deaf.
The law was passed but not fully enforced until
just now.

A group of young deaf people of Costa Rica are
being trained for jobs in the tourist industry.
Such jobs are tourist guides, waiters and waitresses, park guards, housekeepers and bellboys.

There is a project in the Deaf Maryland Community
to video-interview deaf individuals pretty much
involved with the good old days of deaf
telecommunications (TTY machines is an example;
and other one was FCC not willing to get that
involved).

A brand new Deaf Health Clinic Team has been
set up at the University of Michigan Health System.
Yes, it helps that the doctor is deaf and the
support staff know ASL plus with interpreters.

AUTOMATIC EMPLOYER EXCUSE
A deaf person was job-seeking. He could
not find a job.
During one interview, the employer says
all employees must be able to communicate
with customers, and that a deaf person cannot
communicate.
The deaf person said he could write his
responses on paper or through relay service.
The employer’s automatic excuse:

Sorry, I cannot hire you.

It happened in Great Britain, where there
is no ADA. If the employer said the same
thing in USA, he will be sued.

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

Preparing for legislation in Vermont requires advance planning.

I’m working to get SSP services funded by the State through legislation.

It is hard to get all DeafBlind people together and this requires many
interpreters!

I am doing something different and hope this will help convince the
legislators!

I will be traveling with an SSP and I will have collet testimonies via
video.

Then, I will edit it and get it ready to show to the Governor and the
legislators.

I hope this will work.  I have until January for the legislative session.

It is important to go to the Governor’s office and I hope he will add this
to his budget.

He has three tenets for his term and one is to serve the most vulnerable
Vermonters—have at it!

Top stories about the deaf:

New Mexico School for the Deaf signed an agreement with
the state Department of Health on working together with
the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program.

Oregon State University are saying they have made
giant strides towards gene therapy for deaf patients.
Something to do with tinkering with a large hearing-
essential protein.

A big issue among deaf prisoners in Texas is that
they cannot use the TTY machines for one simple
reason – it is so obsolete that practically no one
uses it any more!

Scientists are always looking for deafness connections
between deaf humans and animals. Barn owl has been
studied because this bird does not become deaf
while getting older. A team at University of Oldenburg in Germany wants to know why there is no such a
thing as a “Deaf Owl”!

Nevada State University is beginning a new interpreter
training program – with the goal of providing the
Las Vegas deaf community with enough interpreters.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

One of the most important pieces of equipment that every stenocaptioner owns is a steno machine. The machines that broadcast captioners and CART captioners use are the same machines that court reporters use.

Most people have seen pictures or videos of a court reporter’s machine on TV or in the movies. You probably have seen paper coming out that may look like adding machine tape to some people.

Most new steno machines do not use paper. All the steno note information can now be stored electronically. Captioners really have no need for the paper notes, but some court reporters still insist on having the paper notes to maintain as their permanent record. The steno notes can be displayed on most steno machines and printed out if desired.

Captioners may have the same sorts of feelings about their steno machines as other people have about their cars. Some people upgrade every couple of years and want the latest and greatest with all the bells and whistles, while others keep theirs for years and just hate to part with them even when they have “lots of miles” on them.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Do the deaf have better taste than the hearing?
Do not know, declares DeafDigest – but this was
the issue brought up by writer Tim Carman, not
deaf, in the Restaurant Section of the Washington
City Paper, September 21st edition.
DeafDigest editor has a vice – fondness for
fine food at pricey restaurants. That being
said – there are many hearing diners that do not
know the difference between a great hamburger
and a bad hamburger – but – the same goes for
many deaf diners!
In other words, ability to hear or the lack
of it has nothing to do with determining the
quality of food – only the discriminating
tongue would.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to John Thomas Wheeler,
who departed us. A former resident of Huntsville, Alabama
and a former student at Alabama School for the Deaf, he
was an aeronautical engineer with the NASA. His list of
accomplishments is long, too much for this column.

Said an acquaintance:
He was a very bright and hard working man. Many respected him.

Top stories about the deaf:

There are complaints that deaf patients need
to wait 18 months in Scotland to have evaluation of their mental health needs!

Over-the-counter listening devices vs
expensive hearing aids. Who wins?
According to a survey, testing a small
group of 41 hearing aid people, the
hearing aid wins but not by that great
a margin! This survey was printed in
a recent publication of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In some cities in Malaysia, town councils
would not give deaf drivers their “handicapped” parking stickers to allow
them to park in reserved areas.

Three Uganda ministers (Gender, Labour and Social Development; the Health; and the
Education and Sports) have been slapped
with lawsuits for not providing the
deaf with their accommodation needs.

The SEPTA rapid rail system serves Philadelphia commuters. And deaf commuters
wanting to reach the police had problems
trying to reach a dispatcher through
their mobile phones. This has changed
with a new app that allows the deaf to
reach police directly.

ORAL SCHOOL VS ASL SCHOOL IN SOCCER

About twenty years ago there was a soccer game
between Rhode Island School for the Deaf and Clarke
School for the Deaf.

This game was interesting because Rhode Island players
used ASL while Clarke players communicated orally.

The Rhode Island school invited the Clarke team to a
dinner after the game. The Clarke coach had his team
sit away far away from the Rhode Island group. The

Clarke players were not allowed to communicate with the
Rhode Island players.

Weird? Yes.

This week’s ASL video in youtube

TTY WAS A LUCKY INVENTION

TTY was popular in the Deaf Community from the seventies
through the nineties.

It was a lucky invention. Why? Robert Weitbrecht, a deaf
man, loved to hike in the mountains in California. He
was hiking with a hearing friend. During the hike, another
group came nearby. A woman in that group overheard Weitbrecht’s
oral deaf voice and knew he was deaf. She came to him and
introduced herself as a mother of a deaf son.

Both groups chatted for a while, and Weitbrecht told the
woman that he loved to work on old TTY machines for radio
ham communications. She asked him – why not change the
radio ham TTY machine to deaf TTY machine?

The rest is history!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

The lights in our homes are important for many of us who have Usher Syndrome.

Most often, in younger years, we tend to need lots of lights to see.

The technology keeps changing and some changes are helpful.

In my house we switched our dining area lighting to LED lights.

It was so helpful, less glare and softer.

As an added bonus, the LED lights should last 20 years!

I won’t last that long!

This week’s ASL video in youtube

VIDEO INTERPRETER OR INTERPRETER IN PERSON?
Sometimes deaf people use video interpreters.
Sometimes deaf people use interpreters in person.

Why sometimes video and sometimes in person?
All depends.

With a video interpreter, a deaf person cannot
try to depend on him to help him with other things.
But with an in-person interpreter, some deaf people
are tempted to ask him to help him with other
things.

Both video and in-person interpreters are not
supposed to “help” the deaf person – just interpret
and nothing else!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

It is the beginning of a new school year, and many CART captioners are beginning new assignments. Some students are using CART for the very first time.

Once again, “CART” stands for “Communication Access Realtime Translation.”

Many students and professors will be curious about this service. If a student is comfortable disclosing his or her use of CART to the rest of the class, it is an opportunity to explain what CART is to people who have never seen CART.

Before using CART in the classroom, everyone involved should have a solid understanding of what will take place. These are a couple questions that need to be answered: Will I be using remote CART or onsite CART? Will I be provided note files of the classes by the CART captioner?

Before the school year begins, it is sometimes a good idea to have someone from the disabilities services office, the CART captioner, and the user of CART services sit down and discuss everyone’s expectations.

The disabilities services office will expect the user to notify the CART captioner promptly if the user is not able to attend class for some reason. The user will expect the CART captioner to show up on time and ready to provide services.

CART users should realize that the CART captioners will be blocking out the time periods for their classes for the entire semester. If a CART user cancels the captioner’s services by deciding he or she no longer needs services or by dropping a class, the CART captioner may have already turned down other assignments and may be losing that income.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Did Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf
and Hard of Hearing experience a reincarnation?
No, but its announcement of Alexander Graham
as the new Executive Director seemed like it because
of the similarity of these names. To be fair, the
middle initial of the new person is T. (Alexander
T. Graham).
Another question – does the new executive director
have background in deafness? No, but his background
is in administration of non-profits.
Different backgrounds but with nearly-similar
names, interesting.

note:
he is no longer at the helm at AgBell

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

For years a regular stethoscope has been a problem for
deaf physicians. From time to time there have been
modifications that have helped the deaf physicians
use the stethoscope. The latest modification comes
in two pieces – an electronic scope that would download
the results into a computer. The second is an option,
a headset gear attached to the stethoscope. Cost is
nearly $600, as contrasted to $250.00 for the best
model on the market. Expensive to be a deaf doctor?
Sort of!
