Top stories about the deaf:

“Deaf Art” has become the latest scam in Sussex,
a rural county in south east England. Scammers
knock door to door, trying to sell pieces of
art, claiming they are deaf and live in poverty.
Police is aware of it and is busy alerting
residents.

Halimah Yacob, the newly elected president of
Singapore, said she is committed to making
sure the deaf are still assured of their
rights and needs as first class citizens.

The deaf of the Philippines will be able to
watch closed captions on one TV network.
This was made possible in compliance with the
government edict that TV programs be captioned.

Eight universities in New York were slapped with lawsuits because their web sites were
inaccessible. Some of the involved universities
are Hofstra University, Fordham University, Manhattan College, and Long Island University.

A team of investigators from Medical Research Council
in Great Britain have identified 52 deaf-genes
that many deaf people carry.

PAYING FOR INTERPRETERS AT A WORKSHOP

A deaf person had to attend a workshop as part of his job
training. The issue was – who should pay for the interpreter?
Should the employer pay for it or should the workshop host
pay for it.

The deaf person came up with an idea. He made a suggestion
that he attend the workshop free. And in turn the fee that would
have normally paid for the workshop would go to the interpreters.

The workshop host liked the suggestion, and everyone was
happy about it

DEAFNESS ISSUES NEWSPAPER PULLOUT SECTION

In USA many newspapers have special pullout sections. These
pullouts are all about special issues like religion, country, political party, health, food, travel, the football Super Bowl, etc.

Deafness issues in a paid pullout section? Never saw one in American
newspapers. But in Great Britain, there were a couple of deafness-related
pullout sections in the past.

Wish we had one in USA – that would fairly cover deafness from A
to Z without showing bias.

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

White Cane Safety Day is on October 15.  Below is the history
of how it started.

The National Federation of the Blind assembled on the 6th day of July,
1963 and called upon the governors of the fifty states to proclaim October
15 of each year as White Cane Safety Day in each of our fifty states.

On October 6, 1964, a joint resolution of the Congress, HR 753, was signed
into law authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim October
15 of each year as “White Cane Safety Day.”

This resolution said: “Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives”,
that the President is hereby authorized to issue annually a proclamation
designating October 15 as White Cane Safety Day and calling upon the people
of the United States to observe such a day with appropriate ceremonies and
activities.’

This is an important reminder about the safety needs of us who are DeafBlind.

Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.

Top stories about the deaf:

Daily Texan, the student newspaper of University of
Texas said that the city of Austin does not do much
to promote the use of 911-text feature for the
benefit of the deaf.

Amber Tucker, of the Iowa State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, said in a newspaper letter to the
editor that abolishing licenses for ASL interpreters
is dangerous. As an example, she cited a Florida
lifeguard who volunteered to interpret during
a hurricane emergency meeting, using nonsense
words.

British railroads not accessible to the deaf;
this comment was made by an activist – he
basically said UK running 200 years behind on rail accessibility

Jacksons Food Stores and Jackson Energy, in Idaho,
both have been accused of refusing to provide
accommodations for a deaf applicant in an
interview. EEOC is working on the case.

Flexible learning, a fad or something great
for deaf children? Kate Whale, the president
of New Zealand Federation for Deaf Children
said flexible learning is not great.

AN EMBARRASSMENT AT ART GALLERY
Many years ago in Mexico, Carlos Merida, himself
deaf, was a famous artist.

He went to an art show at a gallery. A few of his
drawings were shown at the event.

He was alone, by himself, without an interpreter.
Two women did not like one of his drawings and
told him that his drawing was bad.

Carlos, without an interpreter and not able to
read lips, thought these women were praising his
work. He then kissed the hands of both women.

Everyone that watched it were very shocked!

Lip reading tale

A hearing mother was explaining to her young deaf child on how their house is heated during the winter
months.

The young deaf child thought the hearing mother said:
The house is heated by cast

Years later, the young deaf child, remembering the
answer, became a teenager.

He then realized the mother actually said:
The house is heated by gas

TINNITUS: A CHOICE
In Scotland few years ago, a hearing woman was
suffering from tinnitus. It is a stubborn ringing
of noise in a person’s head that almost never stops.

The doctor told the woman that she had a
choice – to have an operation to cure tinnitus but
to become deaf for good or to ignore the operation
and suffer tinnitus for life but to remain hearing.

An awful choice!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

In order to become advocates for quality captioning, we must understand the differences between good and bad captioning. Some people may think that some captioners are very bad spellers. However, occasionally the problem is the result of a technical glitch rather than the captioner inputting the wrong words.

If the captions have many missing or wrong letters or have many nonsense symbols, it could be a poor video signal or some sort of transmission or reception problem that is causing the problem with the captions.

If you have a problem with garbled captions on a particular show, you can try viewing the captions on a different television in your home. You could ask a neighbor to check the captions in their home. If the neighbor is having the same problem, you should notify the station and your cable or satellite provider.

If you don’t have a neighbor to check with, you should go ahead and notify your cable or satellite provider so that they can find the source of the problem.

The more we work together to improve the quality of captioning, the better it will be.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Comic book editor Tom Brevoort, not deaf, was
recently interviewed. He said that introducing a
deaf character into a comic book story was much
more complicated than just drawing it in and
weaving it into the plot!
He was referring to the New Avengers #33
book when Echo, a deaf character, was ushered
in. He said:

it remains incredibly difficult to deal with a
deaf character in a book where at least two of
the characters (Spidey & Ronin) wear full face
masks, so this is something we grapple with
issue after issue

He pointed out to a drawing gaffe where Echo,
supposedly deaf, “heard” a door knock; Tom
realized this gaffe but it was too late!

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Jack
Levesque, San Leandro, CA, who departed us. He
was a former executive director of Deaf Counseling,
Advocacy & Referral Agency, one of California’s largest
agencies serving the deaf. As the CEO, he was adept in
maximizing the skills of his employees. Growing up, he
attended Clarke School for the Deaf, and was successful
with speech and with voice telephone communications.
But he quickly embraced ASL upon enrolling at Gallaudet
and stayed with it all his life.

the Black Rock Desert in Nevada gave
accommodations for the deaf in attendance.

A deaf service agency in Surrey, Great
Britain, is embarking on a campaign
to urge all medical personnel to
accommodate deaf patients on their

aids in pharmacies? Or are the future of

The shelters in Antigua and Barbuda are
not deaf-friendly - meaning no interpreters.
This was the comment made by the president
of the Antigua and Barbuda Association for
Persons with Disabilities, keeping in mind
Hurricane Irma.

David Eagleman, not deaf, is a professor at

This week's ASL video in youtube

A PERFECT SPEECH TRICK
Many deaf people cannot speak well. But many
hearing people think some of these deaf people can speak very well.

There is a trick. Some words are difficult to be pronounced; some
words are easily pronounced. The smart deaf person would communicate
with the hearing by only using words that are easy to pronounce,
and by avoiding hard to pronounce words.

Growing up in New York, DeafDigest editor graduated from Charles Evans
Hughes High School. It was hard to pronounce the high school name.
Luckily, the high school changed its name from Textile HS to Charles
Evans Hughes High School.

Many people knew about the old Textile HS, and it was much easier
to pronounce Textile than to pronounce Charles Evans Hughes.

This is the pronunciation trick that fooled hearing people.

MENU FOR DEAF AT MCDONALD'S
This is a true story.

A deaf person drove past a McDonald's place and saw
the sign that said "special menus for the deaf."

Curious, he drove to the window counter and asked for the deaf menu.

The woman behind the counter gave him a Braille menu
for the blind!

Seems McDonald's gives Braille menus to blind drivers
at the window counter?

see if patrons ask them for gestures – such
as more water, refill the drink, need fork,
want to pay check, etc.

When they serve ASL patrons, then their signs
could be confusing. Sometimes the waiter would
come to them thinking a deaf person asked him
for something.

From time to time DeafDigest editor, signing
in ASL, would have waiters come to him, thinking
he wanted something.

Can be confusing!

Rene Pellerin's Corner:

I walk 4 miles 5 days a week to keep the doctor away!

The challenge is to cross a busy road with no sidewalk or
cross walk!

It shocks me to see so many cars just zoom by at a high speed.

The other day, a vehicle on the other side of the road stopped
to let me cross.

But on my side, cars just zoomed by in high speed!

See you tomorrow or maybe not???

It has been years advocating for crosswalk to no luck

Is the Vermont highway department waiting for me to be
the next roadkill?

Rene's show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.

Top stories about the deaf:

There is a push in Utah to have the Martha Hughes Cannon
statue to be erected in Washington, DC. While she
was not deaf, she pushed for the rights and needs
of the deaf. She passed away in 1932.

In an effort to reach out to the deaf community,
the Albuquerque (NM) police offices have
offered to have sit-down cup of coffee sessions
with these deaf residents.

Presidency College (in India) has not paid
teachers of the deaf for the past four months.
These teachers are angry.

At the Rwanda International Trade Fair, one of the
leading vendors, operating her own booth is
Diane Niyonkuru. She is deaf and sells vases,
clothing, jewelry, bags and other stuff.
She communicates via gestures and written
notes, haggling over prices.

A hot issue going on a web site is about
eradicating the deafness gene, hinting the
burden would be on deaf parents that embrace
the Deaf Culture.

HOW TO KILL A JOB INTERVIEW?

This is a true story. A national deaf organization
was advertising for a job as a receptionist/typist.

One hearing woman, ok with her ASL signs, demanded
a very high salary. It was almost equal to the
deaf organization CEO's salary.

Of course, she did not get the job.

Lip reading tale

A hearing person was talking with a deaf person

The deaf person thought the hearing person said:
I caught a pass (talking about football)

The hearing person actually said:
I caught a bass (talking about fishing)

This week's ASL video in youtube

A DYING LANGUAGE AND THE DEAF PERSON
The world has over 6,000 languages and linguists
feel that by year 2100, there will be just 600
languages left.

This is why linguists race to interview old
people that speak rare languages – before these
people die.

Some languages only have 2 or 3 speakers left.

One language in Alaska and another language in
Nepal only have one speaker each. And both of them
are late deafened. Makes it very hard for linguists
to interview them because of their deafness.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As you are considering whether to use remote CART or onsite CART in a high
school or university setting, you will find that remote CART also has many
advantages.

For remote CART, the student would bring a laptop into the classroom and
connect via the Internet with a CART captioner who is located at some
other location. There would be a microphone or microphones in the
classroom so that the CART provider could hear what is going on over a
phone line or Internet connection.

One of the advantages of remote CART is that it is sometimes more
affordable because you do not have the travel time and setup involved as
you would with onsite CART.

If a student is moving from classroom to classroom, sometimes remote CART
is easier because the CART captioner does not have to move all of the CART
equipment from one location to another location. Everything onsite is done
by the student, so there is no outside person involved onsite.

Another advantage is if you do not have an experienced CART captioner in
your area, any CART captioner anywhere in the country could cover the
assignment. This could be especially helpful in a rural area where there
are no CART captioners.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Are we seeing a new trend in interpreting?
It is called Document Sight Translation. Already
some groups are giving workshops in that new
specialty.
What is this all about? Not really quite sure
but it may be something to do with things that
we see are things that need to be interpreted.
Things like medical history, a signed contract,
an employment application - all need to be
interpreted for the benefit of the deaf client.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The incompetent interpreter hired for the state job in
Arkansas is no longer an interpreter. She has been
reassigned to a job as a vocational rehabilitation
counselor - in the very same agency that "hired" her.
Said director Bill Walker:

I believe that I made a mistake in hiring her for the
interpreter position
