Bilbo Monaghan deaf football player without a helmet
Bilbo Monaghan, an all-time Gallaudet football great during the
late twenties and early thirties, never played with a helmet.
After Gallaudet he played a season in pro football with the
Memphis Tigers. This team was part of a league that was just
a notch below the NFL. In these days NFL teams played
exhibition games, and so, Bilbo’s Tigers played two games
against Chicago (now Arizona) Cardinals. In one of these
games Bilbo scored two touchdowns, both on interception
returns. Did he play against the Cardinals without a helmet?
Yes, no helmet! He is in Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
