The British Premier Soccer League (now called Barclays
Premier League) is probably the world’s #1 soccer
league. Has this league ever had a deaf player?
There was one – Cliff Bastin, who was born with a
hearing loss. Over the years his hearing deteriorated
to the point where he was not able to serve in the
British military during World War II. He had to
create hand signals to communicate with his players
on the field. How good was he? At the age of 17,
he became the youngest British player to represent
his nation in international play! He retired
in the late forties.
