Top stories about the deaf:

Before there was a Modern Man that appeared on
the Earth, there were prehistoric Neanderthals.
How did the Neanderthals communicate with
each other? There was a discussion and some
archaeologists and linguists that felt
the Neanderthals used sign language!

………..

A state senator from Idaho has introduced a bill
to require public venue TV sets to be captioned.

……….

Lake Land College, in Illinois, will be offering
a program in TV captions for future TV captioners.

…………….

Paintings that show sign language finger spelling
has been displayed at many bus stops in Biasha,
a city in Poland.

………………

While Zoom has offered free captions, there are
still problems according to an angry deaf user.
A big problem is that while Zoom will offer
transcripts, waiting for it takes a long time!

STARBUCKS VS DEAF CLUBS
Why do many young deaf people avoid going to
deaf clubs? And why do many young deaf people
love to socialize with each other at Starbucks?
Deaf clubs are hurting because of lack of
members. And deaf people buying coffee only
helps Starbucks make money, but does not help
the Deaf Culture.

SPANISH SIGN LANGUAGE OR SPANISH GESTURAL LANGUAGE?
Spanish Sign Language same as Spanish Gestural
Language?
Madrid is a city popular with tourists – the French,
the Italian, the Dutch and from many other countries.
Many Spanish people do not use English as second language.
There is a lot of communication struggles between tourists
and waiters, police officers, shop merchants, etc.
This is where the deaf are equal to these hearing
tourists – because all of them share communication
problems!

SCARING THE PHARMACIST
A deaf man has problems with a pharmacist
who is afraid to communicate with the deaf.

The pharmacist would use body language
to avoid the deaf person, write a very brief
2 or 3 word note and then walk away.

Tired of pharmacist avoiding the deaf
person, he took control. He barked at her
in loud voice, with facial expressions
and gestures.

It worked. The pharmacist no longer
avoided the deaf person!

SICK AND TIRED OF THIS CI QUESTION
A hearing stranger talks to a deaf person.

The deaf person tells the stranger he is deaf.

scolds the deaf person for not having a CI.

This hearing person has the big nerve to
ask this question!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

We have been looking at different things to help us read through
captioning errors, and we have recently spent some time looking at how
stenocaptioners write vowels. Let’s take a look now at how they write
different consonants.

Captioners need to be able to write all the sounds in the English
language, but they do not have all the consonants available on the
keyboard. Therefore, they use combinations of letters to make other
letters.

The initial consonants on the keyboard are STKPWHR. Those letters are used
in various combinations to make all the sounds that words start with.

These are keys located on the left side of the keyboard, and the captioner
will use his/her left hand to depress them.

Some examples of how this works are:
TK is the steno for the letter D.
PW is the steno for the letter B.
HR is the steno for the letter L.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People Scotland
has complained that the deaf people are being
underserved at audiology departments, lacking the
support they deserve. And even worse, members of the
audiological staff do not communicate well with the
deaf patients.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Interpreting at the annual meeting of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science has become
a challenge for interpreter Maureen Wagner. These
sessions are heavy with terminology in science that
every day interpreters do not sign for these words.
Interpreters, not only must get advance copies of
the speeches and then to discuss with the deaf
participants their preferred signs and their preferred
sign language.

A sad situation in the hospital. Interpreter

DISAGREEMENT WITH A SCHOOL DISTRICT
Many parents of deaf children have disagreements
with the school district.
An example would be that the parents want to send the
deaf child to a residential school but the district
wants the deaf child to go to a mainstreamed program.
If you live in Virginia, you may be lucky. The
state Department of Education has mediation services.
The parent and the district can go to mediation
and hopefully solve this disagreement issue.
Does your home state have it? Maybe you may need
to find out.

Top stories about the deaf:

……….

A dispute is going on between the public schools
and New Mexico School for the Deaf concerning
funding of deaf students. Legislators on
both sides of this issue feel trapped.

……….

The “cancel” culture is on us. Do something
wrong and angry people will demand that
the culture behind the issue be cancelled out.
A music critic said that Ancient Greek, Latin,
Italian, French or German be cancelled out
when trying to learn classic music. Sign
Language? This critic said it should be
saved, not cancelled!

……….

Facebook has shut down the news media
in Australia because of an ongoing
dispute over content rights. As a result
the deaf community have been cut off from
access to sign language news.

……….

All languages are right languages. In that
category is the Black American Sign Language.
There is a movement to push this sign language
into the mainstream.

DEAF LOST IN FRANCE; HEARING LOST IN FRANCE
Learning the bus system, the metro subway system, the railroad

At the deaf school in Paris, the administrator told DeafDigest

They are proud of one of their graduates, who is attending a big

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As we have been looking at vowels and vowel sounds, we have seen that most
stenocaptioners write the “ow” sound with the steno OU, and they write the
“oy” sound with the steno OEU.

Fingering mistakes can happen, and captioners can either miss a letter or
add one when it shouldn’t be there. If they do, they can get a totally
different word than they meant to write.

Some examples of this would be:
He dried off with a large beach toil.
She did not want the water in the pot to bowel over.
The politician was being cow about his intentions.

These should be:
He dried off with a large beach towel.
She did not want the water in the pot to boil over.
The politician was being coy about his intentions.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Martha Harris, not deaf, had been serving on the
board of Ohio School for the Deaf for two years,
and had two years to go on a 4-year term. She came
to the next board meeting only to be told she was
no longer on the board. As a result, she has filed
a lawsuit. The state said her seat was “open”
because the past governor did not fill out the
necessary paperwork for the Ohio Senate Clerk
to have it confirmed! And while she was attending
meetings for two years, she was considered to be
an unofficial member. But no one told her that.

Top stories about the deaf:

A TV historian said, in an interview, that
he remembers very well the deaf actress
(Linda Bove) that played as Allison
in the 1980 episode of Happy Days. Reason
was that the Fonz chose to learn signs
to try to communicate with her rather
than to urge her how to speak. The
irony is that she dumped the Fonz in
favor of another hearing person who
already learned ASL for her.

DISABILITY STUDIES VERSUS DEAF STUDIES
Disability Studies is a becoming a popular choice of
major at more and more colleges.
It will be interesting to observe the trend of
Deaf Studies with Disability Studies at these colleges.
Will Deaf Studies be absorbed as part of Disability
Studies? Or would both Studies co-exist as two
separate majors?
This would be interesting to see how things play out
within the next five years.

VERY DEAF PERSON IN DEAF WORLD OR IN HEARING WORLD
There are many “very deaf” people that function
in Deaf World. There are also many “very deaf”
people that function in the hearing world.
Why? Many reasons such as marrying a hearing
spouse, living in a small town,  rejecting Deaf
Culture, parental choice in placing deaf with
hearing people, etc, etc.
There is also another possible reason. Some
oral schools for the deaf would transfer some
very deaf, but very functioning, deaf child
to hearing schools. They feel these deaf children
are better off in the hearing world.
Were these oral schools right? Hard to tell.
