Top stories about the deaf:

Giffgaff, a British mobile network, has produced a new TV
ad that is featured in British Sign Language. It was at
the urging of a deaf employee to set up this such an ad.

……..

Andrew Stadnicki, who is deaf, has been profiled in a story
as one of two deaf advisors serving deaf Canadians.

……..

A super-secret fraternal group said on their bylaws:

organization prohibited people with disabilities from joining.
However, nowadays potential candidates with disabilities
are permitted to join as long as they can show that their
disability will not get in the way of being a member or
cause problems in any way.

ADA is certainly the reason for the change in the
by-laws. No one likes being sued!

………..

A fact that we hate – that the absence of the
deaf in movies is often accepted as fact. This is the
Hollywood’s way of doing things with their scripts
and casts.

An angry deaf actor made that comment.

……….

A deaf fan of baseball posted a tweet, accusing famed
documentary film maker Ken Burns, that said:

I once researched to catch you on “Baseball” documentary film
and learned you never included the deaf players

This week’s ASL video in youtube

HOMEWORK FOR DEAF DURING CONVENTION
When people attend conventions, do they do homework
in their hotel rooms?
Normally, no. But every year there is a national
convention of the National Court Reporters Association.
It is an organization of real-time captioners.
Many of them do their “homework” during the
convention week. Their homework is to caption
the TV news programs in their home towns!
For them it is not “play” time during
convention, but “work” time.

WHICH MSD?
You make a new deaf friend at a deaf club.
He tells you he graduated from MSD.
MSD? Which MSD? Maryland SD or Michigan SD
or Mississippi SD or Missouri SD.
Years ago there was another MSD – Minnesota
School for the Deaf – but the school changed
its name to Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf!
Same thing with ISD – Illinois SD, Indiana SD
and Iowa SD.
These deaf abbreviations can be confusing!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

We have spent quite a bit of time looking at captioning in order to read
through captioning errors. I thought it might be helpful if we talked a
little about “Back to Basics.”

Most readers of this publication are far more knowledgeable about
captioning and CART than the average person, but there might be a few
people reading this who don’t know some of the things I plan to talk
about.

I am constantly asked how captioning is done. Most realtime captioning is
done by people who have been trained to become court reporters, using the
same stenotype machines and theories that court reporters use. This type
of captioning is performed “live” or simultaneous with the production of
the television programming.

Examples of shows that use realtime captioning are news broadcasts,
sporting events, awards presentations, and any other types of shows where
the information is being conveyed to the audience in a “live”
presentation.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

What is the truth behind hearing aid prices? Hearing
aid parts cost $100, and manufactured in China, a low
cost labor nation, end up costing over $2,500 in USA!
Why? The hearing aid manufacturers are saying it is
Research and Development (R&D) costs that is getting
higher and higher. Why R & D? Because consumers want
smaller and smaller hearing aids – and it requires
a lot of research and development to come up with tiny
aids, that one cannot see but is extremely powerful.
These result in higher costs even though the parts
are cheap!

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Nearly 200 deaf Filinos stormed the chambers of the
House of Representatives to demand approval of two
sign language bills (one for the courts and the other
for TV news). This made the front page coverage in
Filipino newspapers.

Nakia Smith, who is deaf, has been honored by GAP
as one of the representatives of diverse groups in
USA.

…………..

Frontier Airlines haa kicked a deaf passenger out of
the plane, saying she “refused” to obey the instructions
of these masked flight attendants. To date, Frontier
has not issued an apology for this gross misunderstanding.

……….

A patient was told if he was not implanted, he would
be deaf in five years.

A vague advice! So open to wide interpretation.

………………

California legislators are arguing – issue is to
increase taxes to fund deaf relay and deaf devices
or to stay the taxes as is.

……………….

NBC Universal has sold 30-second ads for
the next Super Bowl for just $6.5 million,
breaking the record. This begs the next
question, will the sponsors pay for captions
on their record-breaking ads? Most probably will
but there is always a stubborn few that won’t,
saying captioning costs are too expensive. Just
a few hundred dollars!

INTERPRETERS AT DOCTOR’S OFFICES
More and more doctors agree that interpreters are
important with deaf patients during medical
appointments.
The big issue is – who pays for interpreters?
Doctors do not want to pay for interpreters. Insurance
companies do not want to pay for interpreters.
This is the big issue today.

This week’s ASL video in youtube:
http://deafdigest.com/videos/medicalinterpreters/

note:
this is an old video. ADA does not require deaf
patients to pay for provided interpreters. More
doctors go to VRI to avoid paying a penny for
interpreters, and this is another issue – as many
deaf patients hate VRI

From time to time DeafDigest editor likes to go

And it is surprising to find deaf books at these
old bookstores.
He bought a deaf sports book at Cooperstown, NY

book at a Los Angeles bookstore. And also Doug Bullard’s

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

So far we have spent most of our time looking at one-syllable words. We
also need to realize that the same principles work in multisyllable words.

If a stenocaptioner doesn’t have a brief form for a particular word, they
will stroke it out syllable by syllable. Each syllable will be written
with the left hand stroking the initial consonant, the thumbs stroking the
vowels, and the right hand stroking the final consonant.

If the captioner were to have a slip of a finger on the right hand, a
mistake could occur at the end of any syllable of a word.

Some examples of this would be:
He put ketchup and mustard on his hamburger party.
The dog was being trained to obey his matter.
Her ability to remember facts just bottles my mind.

These should be read as:
He put ketchup and mustard on his hamburger patty.
The dog was being trained to obey his master.
Her ability to remember facts just boggles my mind.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Leon Grant,
North Carolina, who departed us. During the sixties
and seventies, he was a Deaf Basketball Immortal.
Standing 6’8 tall, he led his deaf teams to six
national tournament championships. Among all time
deaf basketball greats on all levels over the

Geoff Tunstalls, a deaf Scot, is an ambitious businessman,
operating his successful bicycle repairing shop in Carlisle
that employs a number of deaf people. Not stopping at it,
he is planning to establish a different second business –
a scallop-processing plant. He pays no attention to these
gloomy economic times and goes ahead with his plans. While
he is deaf, he does not use sign language.

There was a story of Johanna Lucht, saying she is
the first deaf engineer at NASA, and also said she
is the first deaf engineer to hold an active role
in a NASA control center during a crewed mission.

True? DeafDigest knows of two past deaf NASA
engineers. Also, it said she held an active
role (see above). What is active? Is it
an isolated, but important role where
her communications with other hearing
engineers were limited – or is it saying
she had an active role in communications with
these engineers?

……………….

Gerri Taker, who is deaf, was profiled in a

IS ORAL INTERPRETING DEAD?
Is oral interpreting now old fashioned and now dead?
Many oral people get tired of reading the lips of oral
interpreters. Some of them “sneak” a look at ASL
interpreters and can follow their signs because of
easier lipreading.
And also, most oral people prefer CART instead of
lipreading.
This is why DeafDigest wonders if oral interpreting
is dead?

Top stories about the deaf:

Wilmington, DC was widely praised for being a great
city and great location to film some Hallmark movies.
One such movie recalled was “What the Deaf
Man Heard.” People remember it even if it was an
old movie, being filmed in the 1970’s!

……..

More airports have automated announcement systems
in just a few languages. English one of them?
It wasn’t mentioned but European airports do
carry English as one of these few languages.

……..

How would a hearing director, knowing zero ASL,
communicate with two deaf actresses performing
in her play. She went to Google Meets, using
voice recognition closed captioning. Is
voice recognition closed captioning 100 percent
effective? No. But better than nothing!

………..

At the Dialogue Hub cafe in South London, hearing
patrons are not allowed to voice their drink
orders. They must use British Sign Language to
order their drinks. Yes, there are communication
signs that help the hearing learn their drink
orders!

……….

a newspaper headline said:
Accessibility in banking: how finance actually fails
when it comes to catering to customers with disabilities

With the deaf, it refers to voice as a requirement

This week’s ASL video in youtube

RUDE OR NOT RUDE?
A deaf employee was arguing with a hearing employee
about a work matter.
Suddenly the hearing employee walked away. The deaf
employee screamed at him – don’t walk away. The hearing
employee ignored him.
The deaf man chased the hearing employee and saw him
on the telephone at his desk.
The deaf man realized the hearing man heard the phone
ring at his desk so went there to pick up the phone.
Was it rude or not rude? The hearing person should
have gestured that there is a phone call, but he didn’t
gesture.

TALKING TO THE DEAF PERSON OR PERSON BEHIND DEAF PERSON?
We always hate it when you think a hearing person is
talking to you.
He really wasn’t talking to you but talking to a hearing
person behind you.
You respond to the hearing person, and it can get all
very confusing at the same time!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Our purpose in looking at how stenocaptioners write different sounds is to
help us to be able to read through captioning errors when they occur.

We have been looking at how captioners write final consonant sounds. The
final “-m” sound is written using two keys on the steno keyboard, the
final P and L.

If a captioner were to write the word “arm,” they would write the steno
ARPL. As we look at the blended sound “-rm,” we can see that if a
captioner were to accidentally drag the P or the L key, they might get
some unexpected final “-rm” sounds.

Some examples of this would be:
She always fed peanuts to the squirm in her yard.
The rocket was traveling at warm speed.
She wore a beautiful perm necklace.

These should be read as:
She always fed peanuts to the squirrel in her yard.
The rocket was traveling at warp speed.
She wore a beautiful pearl necklace.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Sally Keyrouz, a deaf saleswoman at the MySize, a clothing
store for women in Australia, is quite popular with hearing
patrons. She knows how to help the patrons select right
clothing with right colors and right designs. As described
by an associate, she is efficient, passionate and helpful.
She did not start out to work at the clothing store, as her
previous jobs were dead ends – mostly distributing mail
at offices. Her boss said:

Sally is very good at putting customers at ease, especially as
many of our customers have body image issues

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Judy Hodak, a deaf ballet dancer with her hearing partner,
won, danced to the “Sound of Silence” theme with music
being turned off – and won rave reviews from the judges
at the Buckeye Ball in Youngstown, Ohio. One of the judges
said it was the first time he saw the music instead of hearing
it. This deaf/hearing ballet team practiced this routine
for one year before entering this regional competition.
