Top stories about the deaf:

Former New York police officer Dan Carione
who became deaf because of an incident while
on patrol, was honored for his service
ad advocate for the deaf. He lost his
job when he became deaf, and sued to
get his job back. The city offered to
give back his old job but refused to change
the policy regarding late-deafened
police officers. He refused to accept his
old job because of the old policy.

A team of researchers at the University of California San Diego is working on
a special glove that would convert ASL
to text on a computer screen. Another
“better” mousetrap? DeafDigest thinks
so because there are other research teams
working on such ASL to text projects.

Hearing child mainstreamed into a public
school system for a reason. That is the
story of Craig Schaefer, currently a
graduate student at University of Florida.
He wanted to be able to communicate with
his two deaf brothers, and so chose to
enroll in a mainstreamed program as a
youngster. His story was featured in a
local newspaper.

RIT/NTID won a $2.6 million federal grant
to study how young deaf adults process
the English language.

A Skype relay service for the deaf has
been established in the Wakayama-shi,
Wakayama Prefecture (Japan) region.

SLIGHTLY DEAF STUDENT AT US NAVAL ACADEMY
The US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD, is a tough place
to attend classes and to take part in the naval drills.

The ensigns become US Naval officers after graduation.

There is no way for a deaf student to enroll at the
academy. But few years ago the rules were bent and
the Naval Academy allowed him to enroll – because the academy needs good athletes in all sports!

A BIG DEAF AGENCY MISSES THE GRANT DEADLINE

This is a true story during the late seventies. A big
deaf agency hired a grant writer. He wrote a great grant,
but it took so much time. And when he was done writing
the grant, the agency driver had to fight through the
heavy traffic jam to try to make it to the government
agency before deadline time.

He arrived late. The government agency would not
accept the grant.

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

When you are a cook, searching for spices is a challenge!

I have several people living in my house so organizing spices is not an easy task!

When no one is at home, I have to use my electronic magnifier, called a Ruby.

It is not easy to read the bottles that are round.  What happens when the battery dies?

Here are some tricks I have started to use before I turn on my magnifier device.

For example: Ground Mustard –

Search bottles that are light weight.  Then you get a few bottles.

Then use the magnifier to locate the spice you are looking for!

Now the other spices?  That is a longer story!

Deaf-Blind.

Artist Henry Raeburn (1756–1823)not deaf, painted

University College London has always required

advisor with Google.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

for discriminating against a deaf applicant seeking
employment with this automobile chain.

Taylor Swift is currently involved in a nasty
lawsuit. But she actually is not that nasty,
witness being victimized by a money-donation
prank that involved Willie Ross School for the Deaf. Once she realized it was a prank
several year ago, she reached out the school
and made a sizable donation!

FIGHTING OR PLAYING?
We often see dogs rough it up with each other. Are they
fighting or playing? Hint – look at dog’s tails and jaws.

We often see hearing people “rough” with each other.
Are they fighting or playing? Hearing people can tell by
listening to their voices – angry voice or playful
voice.

We, the deaf, often cannot tell if it is playing or
fighting!

HIRING A CONSULTANT IN A MOVIE FOR NOTHING

From time to time Hollywood people hire Deaf Consultant

to work with directors and producers in a big filming
that involves a deaf actor.

And sometimes hiring the consultant is a waste of time
and waste of money.

Why? Because when filming is finished, the film editors
may cut out scenes that involve deaf actors!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) is the organization that represents judicial reporters and broadcast and CART captioners across the country. Highlights include the installation of NCRA’s 2017-2018 Board of Directors, the winner of the Distinguished Service Award, the results of the national speed and realtime contests, the announcement of scholarship and grant recipients, and top-notch speakers addressing the topics and issues relevant to today’s court reporters, captioners, legal videographers, students, and school officials.

The schedule is jam-packed with educational sessions, the latest in new products and services showcased on the Expo Hall floor, and an array of networking opportunities that cannot be found anywhere else. News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Kim Robinson, who is deaf, is campaigning
for a seat on the Nelson Marlborough District
Health Board, which is in Marlborough,
New Zealand.
He stands a chance of winning the election.
It is not because he is a polished politician,
nor because he is extremely knowledgeable on
health-related issues.
It may be because he is the only candidate
to have signed up for that seat! Election
officials expected about 10-12 candidates
to sign up. Yet, none of them did, except
for Kim.
Pretty much reminds DeafDigest editor
of a deaf man who won the election for a
minor office only because he was the
only candidate! It took place about

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

deaf individuals were hired as security guards, especially
in the Tower of London area.

The ministry of public safety in Zimbabwe is now requiring all of its police officers

DEAF LOST IN FRANCE; HEARING LOST IN FRANCE
Learning the bus system, the metro subway system, the railroad
system in France can be a big challenge.

Which is better – to be deaf in France and to depend on eyes to
follow directions, or to be hearing in France and to depend on
ears to follow directions?

No difference. Hearing people get lost in France; same as with the
deaf!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

Going to medical appointments worries many of us who are DeafBlind.

The reason? Will there be an interpreter lined up to provide us with access
to communication or not?

Well, I was in this situation a few times in the past few years.

One day I went to my doctor as scheduled 4 months in advance.

I sat in the waiting room waiting for my interpreter so we could proceed to
check in.

After a long wait, I walked to the receptionist and we had no way to
communicate!

The frustrating part was that my ride would not return for one hour!

I went out and waited for my ride and caught up on my sun tan!

Recently, I had an appointment to see a physical therapy in the same
building.

I waited in the waiting room a long time.  I assumed they screwed up again!

The physical therapist came to me and started fingerspelling, saying “sorry,
we forgot to hire an interpreter”.

We proceeded with the appointment with him fingerspelling the whole time!

It was too much and too difficult but it killed my time till my ride
returned!
