Janel Birrkenott, a deaf woman,
was a big basketball star with the
Northern State University (South
Dakota) during the eighties.

She led the state women players in
scoring one season, and briefly
played pro women’s basketball.

To communicate with her while
she had the ball in her games
with the college team, the
coaching staff had these
signs that said #1, #2, #3, #4
etc. This would tell her of
these on-court strategies.

Most coaches of these deaf players
don’t but this one at Northern
State University did.
