Eugene Hairston, who defeated two world champions in
non-title bouts, was forced to retire from the ring at
the age of 22 because of a bad gash above his eye
that couldn’t stop bleeding. Because of his deafness,
the ring promoters installed lights at the corners
that would flash, indicating the end of the round.
After Hairston retired, the flashing lights became
part of the boxing landscape. He fought in late forties.
