There are many hearing people that cannot believe that
a deaf person, ASL-speaking with no speech skills,
could actually ooach a hearing team in any sport.
The late Charles Core coached basketball and softball teams,
both hearing and deaf, in Louisiana and then in the
Washington, DC area.
His favorite tale was a hearing softball team that he
coached. Before a league game was to start, the opposing
softball coach wanted to discuss a game matter with
Core’s team. The coach came to one of the Core’s players,
thinking Core was not capable of communicating.
Core’s players referred the opposing coach to Core. The
opposing ooach refused and insisted on discussing this
pre-game matter with one of Core’s players. This went
on several times, and the opposing coach gave up,
went back to his bench, not discussing anything at all!
