deaf-lifeguard-that-saved-lives-for-40-years

In Galveston, TX, there is a plaque that
honors a deaf lifeguard, LeRoy Columbo.
He was credited with saving over 900 lives
in a career that spanned 40 years. ADA was
never the issue when he applied for the job
as a young man. The only criteria was to
be able to swim non-stop for three hours.
After he passed that barrier, the job was his
to keep for the next 40 years! He passed away
in 1974. A Galveston street is named after him.
