DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, February 1, 2012

- A new national organization of deaf truck drivers?

Possible good news for deaf individuals that want to become
truck drivers. The Department of Transportation will allow
deaf individuals to apply for Class A and B Commercial
Drivers Licenses and to drive across state lines. There
is a Facebook group for Deaf Truck drivers. Just go into
Facebook and look for it.

– Some deaf Egyptians earn full pay checks for not going to work!

Egypt requires businesses with over 50 employees to set aside
5 percent of jobs for the deaf and the disabled. Many employers
hate that law but “hire” the deaf to prove that they obey it.
They tell the deaf to stay home and not come to work! Why?
Egyptians look down on the deaf and the disabled. They don’t
want to be seen being with the deaf. Very sad.

– 16 percent of state without E-911 emergency relay services for the deaf

Missouri has 114 counties and one independent city. How many
of these counties lack E-911 emergency relay services for the
deaf? There are 18 counties without E-911 service. It is 16
percent of Missouri not accessible to the deaf!

– A hearing person arrested for yelling at a deaf person

When a hearing person yells at us, we hate it. We often
don’t know why he is yelling. Well, a hearing ex-boyfriend
yelled at his deaf ex-girl friend. He yelled when she tried
to use her computer several times to contact the police
to ask for protection. He shut down her computer without
touching her. But it scared the deaf woman. The police came
and arrested him, charging him of assault and intimidation.
The assault was because he put her in fear. The police told
her to get a restraining order.

– Sign language more popular than English in South Africa

South Africa has 11 official languages plus other 20-25 unofficial
languages. Sign language is not an official South African language,
yet it is the nation’s 9th most popular language, higher than
English! Thandile Sunduza, chairperson of the National Assembly’s
Arts and Culture committee, said:

Sign language is used more than English

- Special notice

The signed videos in this Gold edition come with text
on the screen. Text is located below the video. The
change is being made because of circumstances.

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Video games are notorious for not being deaf-friendly
(lack of captions and subtitles). This may change, at
least a little, if a Japanese game programmer has his
way. He developed a game – Katawa Shoujo, which is
about a group of deaf and disabled students attending
a special needs school. This game involves interaction
between the group – and contestants need to make
game-choices, just like with other games on the market.

Ken Noll, who is deaf and has a college degree in
landscape architecture from University of Illinois,
was written up in a local newspaper. He owns
his business – Garden Kingdom, based in Glen Carbon,
Illinois but does business in the tri-state area.
Currently he has a staff of nine people working
for him, performing full service landscaping.

- Very Hot News

We have had deaf individuals donating money to Gallaudet;
we also have had deaf individuals donating money to NTID.
What about hearing colleges? Deaf architect Robert Nicol
has donated a 7-figure amount to Fresno State University.
Funds donated often come with strings attached, and in
Nicol’s case, it must go to a program to help hearing
parents work with their deaf children.

- Thursday January 26th

Another cause of deafness is antibiotics, according
to researcher Peter Steyger, himself deaf. Working as
a research scientist at Oregon Health & Science University
he has published his findings in a health publication.

- Friday January 27th

We have weather spotters, those individuals that enjoy looking
at the weather at a location and then reporting it to the
National Weather Service. Deaf weather spotters? A workshop
taking place in Nashville hopes to train a deaf group to become
weather spotters. The group is learning everything what it takes
to identify different types of weather.

- Saturday January 28th

A reality TV show is being launched in Mexico. The program -
Viaje Todo Incluyente – involves five disabled individuals,
two of them deaf, that love to travel and tour popular sites. The deaf participants are Julio Cesar, a student, and Alejandra, a teacher of the deaf.

…..

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Stem Cells going to help the deaf? The FDA has approved an
experiment that the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital,
Houston, TX will be performing. It is just an experiment,
and so, no conclusions should be reached until down the
road.

PAYING FOR INTERPRETERS AT A WORKSHOP

A deaf person had to attend a workshop as part of his job
training. The issue was – who should pay for the interpreter?
Should the employer pay for it or should the workshop host
pay for it.
The deaf person came up with an idea. He made a suggestion
that he attend the workshop free. And in turn the fee that would
have normally paid for the workshop would go to the interpreters.
The workshop host liked the suggestion, and everyone was
happy about it.

DEAFNESS ISSUES NEWSPAPER PULLOUT SECTION
In USA many newspapers have special pullout sections. These
pullouts are all about special issues like religion, country, political party, health, food, travel, the football Super Bowl, etc.
Deafness issues in a paid pullout section? Never saw one in American
newspapers. But in Great Britain, there were a couple of deafness-related
pullout sections in the past.
Wish we had one in USA – that would fairly cover deafness from A
to Z without showing bias.

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Are deaf people invisible with their deafness?

A. Yes and no. A deaf person that does not sign and
does not have a hearing aid or a CI will appear to
be invisible in public. But once a deaf person uses
sign language or speaks with an obvious deaf voice,
then the invisibility disappears!

- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Terry Halpine,
or better known as the Legendary New York Strongman of the
fifties and sixties, who departed us.

Growing up in New York City during the fifties and sixties,
everyone in the Deaf Community talked all about Terry, who was so strong (there was no weightlifting in these days) that he was a force in Fanwood football, semi pro football and in boxing for a short time.

He was a peacemaker at deaf parties where some people,
with too much to drink, wanted to stir trouble. The
mere sight of Terry staring at them immediately
restored peace. Despite his immense strength, he was a
very friendly fellow.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to James Leland Jespersen,
not deaf. He departed us in November but news of his
departure was not made known until this week. To make a
long story short, he co-invented closed captioning way back
in the seventies.

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Sports possibly no more free at Illinois School for the Deaf?
Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill to allow the school to charge parents for their children’s participation in sports.
Illinois is broke and the state is looking for ways to
save money. Already there are complaints that this bill
violates federal law. And also low-income families may not have to pay for their children’s participation.
Its’ all so vague and so murky right now.

People that work with the deaf in Salford, a town, near
Manchester, England, are complaining. They are saying
that proposed budget cuts for services for deaf children
are “”among the worst seen”. Town officials wish to
reduce from 3 full time teachers and 2 part time
teachers to just two positions. Already the leaders
in the deaf and the disabled community have been
waging war against the town council.

- Very Hot News

Many members of the military forces lose their hearing, but
for the most part Pentagon has ignored this issue. Not any more,
at least with the Marine Corps. All Marines must undergo an
annual hearing exam!

In Indiana, the House Education Committee passed HB1367, a bill vigorously opposed by the Deaf Community and vigorously supported by parents of the deaf. This bill then goes to the House for
full vote. If House passes it, it then goes to the committee in
the senate. HB1367 gives parents choices in how to best educate
their deaf children, including Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD)
as one of the options. Opponents feel it would destroy ISD, a
comment parents of the deaf do not agree! One battle done; several
more battles to go.

- Sunday January 22nd

Andy Rihs, not deaf, is pouring money into an Australian cycle racing team, called GreenEDGE, which hopes to win major races,
like the Tour de France. What about it? The money he is pouring
comes from his sale of his company, Phonak, a hearing aid
manufacturer. He is no longer involved in the hearing aid
business.

- Monday January 23rd

A big issue in Bangalore is the no-show of important
hearing people that accept invitations as keynote
speakers at big deaf events only to never to show up!
The audiences at such big events had to wait as long
as 90 minutes waiting for the keynote speakers only
to painfully realize they were never going to show up.

Sleep apnea causing sudden deafness? DeafDigest editor
knows of a deaf person who went to bed a hearing
person and woke up as a deaf person. Why? Doctors
couldn’t figure it out in his case. That was years
ago. Is it possible that Sleep apnea may be the
reason? Yes, according to a study team from Taiwan
whose findings were in agreement with Dr. Seva Polotsky, a sleep apnea researcher from Johns Hopkins University.

- Wednesday January 25th

Timothy M. Kelly, the superintendent of St Mary’s
School for the Deaf, is the new chairperson of
New York State’s 4201 Schools Association. As
mentioned in DeafDigest in the past, these 4201
schools are privately run, but get funds from
the state. And for the past several years, the
state governor and the legislators have been
making noises about cutting these 4201 funds.
And at the 11th hour, these 4201 schools have
been granted a reprieve.

- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff

A prize that culture groups in northwest England try
to win is the Lever Prize, valued at 10,000 British
Pounds. And the winner was the DaDa, the British’s
the winner were representatives of British’s largest
corporations in the northwest region.

AN EMBARRASSMENT AT ART GALLERY
Many years ago in Mexico, Carlos Merida, himself
deaf, was a famous artist.
He went to an art show at a gallery. A few of his
drawings were shown at the event.
He was alone, by himself, without an interpreter.
Two women did not like one of his drawings and
told him that his drawing was bad.
Carlos, without an interpreter and not able to
read lips, thought these women were praising his
work. He then kissed the hands of both women.
Everyone that watched it were very shocked!

TINNITUS: A CHOICE
In Scotland few years ago, a hearing woman was
suffering from tinnitus. It is a stubborn ringing
of noise in a person’s head that almost never stops.
The doctor told the woman that she had a
choice – to have an operation to cure tinnitus but
to become deaf for good or to ignore the operation
and suffer tinnitus for life but to remain
hearing.
An awful choice!

THE DEAF AND THE MUSIC
Do deaf people like music? A music professor from
Nigeria said:

People who are deaf cannot perceive music and, they are always not happy

No music, we, the deaf, not happy? This comment is puzzling
because we have Sean Forbes and Signmark, both of whom made
strides with Deaf Music in the hearing world.

CROSS TALK, DEAF OR NOT DEAF?
DeafDigest editor knows of two individuals. One is
hearing with almost perfectly normal hearing. The other
is labeled as “deaf” but with almost perfectly normal
hearing!
Hearing or deaf? It has a lot to do with ability to
hear cross talk. To define cross talk is to sit on a
meeting table in a closed room. A dozen people are seated
around the meeting table and they all talk at the same
time – to someone next to them, or someone across the
table.
The hearing person DeafDigest editor knows cannot
catch cross talk, but that person is always defined
as a hearing person. The other person was labeled
as deaf by his school district only because he cannot
catch cross talk.
But apart from cross talk, both function perfectly
as hearing. Guess no two school districts define
deafness the same.

PRO GOLF TOURNAMENTS AND THE DEAF
The most recent edition of Sports Illustrated ran
a piece on Bill Clinton’s involvement with pro golf.
It said:

Every PGA Tour event has a cause.

Bill Clinton’s cause is lowering cholesterol and
raising metabolism.
There are many, many causes, deaf-related causes
included.
And we are not seeing PGA Tour event promoting
a deaf cause.
Examples are:

- more captions on TV
- more interpreters everywhere
- better educational opportunities for the deaf

These causes are not group-specific, such as CI,
Cued Speech, ASL, oralism, etc – rather captions
help everyone that is deaf regardless of their
group-specific affiliations. The same goes for
interpreters and educational opportunities.
Anyway, we need just one high profile celebrity
sensitive to the needs of the deaf.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

comment like this -

hearing students have the same rights as deaf students!

(DeafDigest is not sure why that interpreter made that
comment)

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

People have asked me about the “dictionaries” that I often speak
about that captioners, CART providers, and court reporters use.

A captioner’s dictionary is not a book where he or she looks up the
spellings of words. The dictionary is a computer file in the
translation software system that the captioner uses, and it consists
of the steno strokes and English definitions of the words that a
captioner writes on his or her steno machine.

Many captioners and court reporters begin with a basic translation
dictionary when they are in school, and they build it up word by word
as they write about new topics. A word’s stroke combination must be
defined in the dictionary before it can come up in English during the
translation process.

Every new word or name that a captioner encounters must be entered
into the dictionary in order for it to translate properly. Because
captioners write phonetically, they may have multiple ways of
entering the same English word. For instance, captioners may have
many phonetic entries for a word like “cacophony.” They may hear it
as ka-koff-o-ny, ko-kauf-a-ny, kau-kauf-ny, or many other ways. A
captioner may have to define each of those phonetic pronunciations.

- wait a long time for ADA to approve your issue, and it

JAFFE VS MATALIN – A LIPREADING MYSTERY
Mr Jaffe, a past high school teacher, was easy to
lipread. The famous Mary Matalin was impossible to
lip read.
Why? Possibly because no two people are the same.
Everyone talks differently, everyone has different
voice, everyone talks either fast or slow, everyone
speaks with accent from their own home regions, etc.
In other words, no two people have the same
mouth and lip movements!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

When South Carolina legislators argue over the state budget
and over the governor’s legislative proposals, they will
thumb thru documents that were distributed by the governor.
The document cover design, consisting of a state flag asides
with the American flag, was rendered by Noi Nilsuwankosit,
a graduate of South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind.
Currently she attends NTID, majoring in Graphic Design.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Do we have deaf individuals designing their own
clothes in the high fashion trades?
Years back there was a deaf woman who attempted
to break into the fashion field but was not
successful.
We have one – in United Kingdom. Jane Farwell,
who is deaf, designs her clothes under the
label “Think! Clothing.”
Her clothes are made by factories in India
for re-sale in the United Kingdom.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

A newspaper story ran like this -

In one case, a deaf student with college dreams dropped out of high
school after DC Public Schools failed to provide an adequate sign language interpreter

This story accused the DC Public Schools of reporting the student’s
case as a “success story.”

Without knowing the real facts behind this case, DeafDigest editor
cannot help but wonder why wasn’t that student sent to the
Model Secondary School for the Deaf? Maybe there is a reason that
we do not know about.

….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A hearing mother asked her son for a favor

The deaf son thought the mother asked:
please go to the store and buy a box of “Call” detergent

She actually asked:
please go to the store and buy a box of “All” detergent

Call detergent?

Fortunately the deaf son had it all figured out when he noticed “All” detergent” on the supermarket shelf
and knew it was a lipreading issue!

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, January 25, 2012

– Some of 600 children certified as hearing may possibly be deaf!

In Liverpool, England, a doctor gave hearing tests to 600 children,
and signed papers showing they were hearing. These tests took place
at the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital audiology clinic between 2007
and 2011. Later, it looked fishy because about 10 of the children
were found to be deaf. The shocked hospital staff fired the doctor
and ordered all 600 children to be re-tested! The angry British
public health officials is investigating it and may revoke the
doctor’s license. And possibly go to jail for fraud.

– A famous comment by a deaf chef of a deaf-owned restaurant

The Viuda Bistro is a deaf-owned restaurant in Buda, Texas, near
Austin. The restaurant chef is Kurt Ramborger. He is deaf.

He said:
You don’t need ears to cook

Kurt is right; we have a few deaf chefs in USA, including two in
the Los Angeles/Southern California area. These two stand out
in the area as one of the best chefs around.

– England wants more deaf reporters on TV news programs

Few weeks ago DeafDigest mentioned that Karen Meyers may be the
nation’s only deaf TV news reporter. England better than USA?
The BBC, a big TV network in England, wants to hire about 10 new
deaf reporters for TV news programs! Why England and not USA?

– Post office confusion between deaf school and hearing school

In Phoenix, there are two schools – Phoenix Day School for the Deaf
(PDSD) and the Phoenix Country Day School (PCDS). It is these
abbreviations, and possibly the full names, that confused
the mail carriers. From time to time wrong letters and wrong packages
would be delivered to the wrong schools! Now, because of better
technology (bar code), mistakes and confusion are no more.

– Kodak bankruptcy and the deaf

It is sad to read about Kodak filing bankruptcy. Years back,
Thomas Edison, a deaf man, invented movie equipment to shoot
movies. Kodak invented the film that Edison needed to make
these movies. In 1971 Kodak hired its first NTID graduate.
And the number of deaf employees grew to about 100.
These deaf people had backgrounds in engineering, science,
computer aided design technology, photography, printing,
business and computers. And at annual NTID job fairs,
Kodak was always there. What is the future? Kodak will not
disappear and will probably change into something different
and will still continue to hire the deaf.
