DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, May 16, 2012

- A big scandal among “deaf” teachers in India

Six hundred hearing teachers obtained medical certificates
of their “deafness”. They did not want to be transferred
to different school districts, wanting to teach in their
own districts. The law in India only says hearing teachers
can be transferred while deaf and disabled teachers can stay.
As a result, all of these 600 “deaf” teachers were fired
because of fraud!

- The Susan G. Komen Race and the deaf

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure organizers asked a group
of interpreters for free interpreting services. Many interpreters
refused – because the Komen group collected $400 million dollars
in donations and race fees, but not a penny for interpreters!

- Biggest Loser won’t apologize

Margie Cummins, not deaf, won the 2012 British TV Biggest
Loser contest. During one of these Biggest Loser TV shows,
she laughed and insulted the deafness of contestant Selena
Brown. When Selena was upset about it, Margie refused to
apologize. She still refused when friends asked her to
apologize! Why? Margie does not care.

- Deaf chefs cannot hear the frying pan

We have several deaf chefs in USA that serve best meals.
Do they have to hear to cook these great dishes? A hearing
chef told a newspaper reporter that he listens for the
popping sound of hot olive oil in the frying pan. When he
hears it pop, he knows the pan is ready for frying. Hearing
chefs cook better than our deaf chefs? No! Deaf Chefs use
eyes; hearing chefs use ears – same results with great meals!

- You can buy a voice weather radio that alerts deaf

Last week DeafDigest mentioned a NOAA voice weather
radio that can help the deaf with alerting signal
device. It was learned that Harris Communications
sells this special radio.

Do visit it at: http://www.harriscomm.com/index.php/equipment/signaling-systems/weather-alert.html

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Lara Steward, a deaf British woman, is an actor. But
acting alone does not support a full time living.
She tried farming, but again it did not work out.
She is now a pet shop owner in Hibaldstow, a small town. Already she has seen hearing customers come
to her shop to make purchases.

Some hospitals have this habit of misplacing patients’
personal possessions – such as watches, wireless
devices, eyeglasses – and – hearing aids! In the case of
a hospital in Great Britain, the administration had to reimburse the patients £131,000 for lost hearing aids.
That is $211,255 in American dollars.

- Very Hot News

A new group, the European Deaf Geographies Summit, had
first meeting at England’s Bristol Centre for Deaf
Studies. Their press release was vaguely worded but
it has a lot to do with research on deafness-related
topics.

- Thursday May 10th

Gallaudet senior Zach Ennis is serving as an intern for
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, a Republican. Yoder has a special
interest in the deaf because Kansas School for the Deaf
is located in his jurisdiction.

- Friday May 11th

Actor Johnny Depp laughed very hard when he was told
of his ASL errors during the Sir Paul Mccartney’s My
Valentine video. It was mentioned by DeafDigest a couple
of times. This shows his lack of sensitivity towards
our sign languages everywhere in the world.

- Saturday May 12th

Deafness among children in China is often because of
improper use of antibiotics such as streptomycin, kanamycin and gentamicin. As a result, China’s State Food and Drug Administration has approved use of a
gene detector in hopes of curbing deafness in future
children.

…..

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Dr. Agarwal’s Group of Eye Hospitals, in Chennai, is a famous eye treatment center in India. This hospital is
experimenting with a new gene therapy in which the staffers
hope will improve chances of sight among those with Usher syndrome. They’ve already experimented with a 24-year
old patient and they are seeing some improvement with him.

BE CAREFUL IF YOU USE ASL IN THE COURT ROOM
A Coda and his deaf father were sitting in the court room,
just watching the court session.
The Coda used sign language to explain to the father
what the attorneys and defendants were saying.
The judge saw it and told the Coda to stop signing.
The Coda explained that he was interpreting for his
deaf father.
The judge then told both of them to go to the back
of the room and sit there so that the signing would
not interrupt the session.

TV CAPTIONS AT A RESTAURANT BAR
DeafDigest editor was eating at a restaurant
bar and asked the bar tender to turn on the captions.
He struggled for a long time and failed, and then
asked the editor to move to another table where
captions were shown.
The bartender explained that captions are easy
to turn on with old TV sets but with new TV sets,
it is very difficult to turn on the captions!

AN ISSUE WITH THE SEMESTER AT SEA
There was some discussion regarding interested deaf students
wanting to participate in the Semester at Sea programs.
This organization, under the sponsorship of University of
Virginia, enables students to spend a semester studying while
on a cruise ship.
Could a deaf student participate? Yes, if he is accompanied
by an interpreter(s).
But who pays for interpreters is another thing. There were
several suggestions that were thrown back and forth.
Still, no solution. Interpreters won’t interpret for free
even if rich once-in-a-lifetime experience is offered as
an incentive.

A CAREER EDUCATOR OF THE DEAF RESPONDS TO THE TEXAS OPTIONS

A career educator of the deaf said Texas is, indeed, the
less education of the deaf.

TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THE NEW YORK BIGS
Many would-be actors leave behind the small towns they
grew up all their lives to make it in the New York theatrical
community.
One such individual is Tad Cooley, who will move to
New York from Vanderbilt, Texas to study acting at the
New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. He has been
involved with high school drama, small films, small theatre
and Internet theater – taking such lessons in acting,
vocal and dancing.
What about it? He is deaf. He does not know sign language.

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Why are many deaf people more tense than hearing people
when it comes to home appointments (cable technicians,
electricians, plumbers, etc)?

A. They have to constantly watch the flashing signalers
to make sure the visit is not missed. If they leave the
room for a few minutes to go to the bathroom, they are
afraid the lights would flash and the tech person will
think no one is home and leave!

An Invitation to Apply for the Position of President
Willie Ross School for the Deaf
Longmeadow, MA

Founded by parents -providing excellence in education one child at a time.

THE SEARCH
The Willie Ross School for the Deaf (WRSD) seeks an inspirational and energetic President to shape the next stage of growth for this distinctive organization. The President will provide direction to the School and serve as its public face, leading advocate, and operational steward. S/he will build on the momentum created by a dedicated board, veteran staff, and the outgoing President, Dr. Louis Abbate, who will be stepping down in 2013 after 28 years in the role. The ideal candidate will be an experienced educational or nonprofit leader and strong communicator with a deep commitment to the needs of deaf children and their families. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a school with a reputation for innovation that aims to provide for the evolving intellectual, social, and emotional needs of each and every student.

Located in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, WRSD is a private school that was founded in 1967 by parents who wanted a day school option for their deaf children. With a model that allows students to learn at its Longmeadow Campus as well as in East Longmeadow public schools, WRSD is a pioneer in the mainstreaming of deaf students. Its simultaneous communication model – combining English-based sign language with spoken language – underscores the school’s prioritization of individual student needs above any particular approach or philosophy. WRSD continues to expand its offerings in order to be as responsive as possible to its student body. In addition to its campus-based programs, WRSD offers an array of audiological and educational services to students in 20 communities in Central and Western Massachusetts. With its educational partnership model, the School has become a national thought leader in deaf education and stands poised to take the next step in its evolution.

The President reports to the Board of Trustees and oversees a school that enrolls 63 students and reaches about 200 more through its outreach division. The 48-person WRSD staff includes four senior administrators, faculty, interpreters, audiologists, counselors, and speech therapists. The ideal candidate will have senior leadership experience at an institution with a focus on educating students with special needs. S/he should be experienced in reaching out to community leaders, policy makers, parents, and educational experts. S/he should have a passion for educating children and possess strong entrepreneurial instincts.

WRSD has retained the national executive search firm Isaacson, Miller to assist in this recruitment. All inquiries, nominations/referrals, and resumes with cover letters, should be sent electronically and in confidence to:

New VP Remote Control at Harris Communications

Are those buttons on your VP remote control a little hard to see? Do you end up pushing the wrong button because you get the buttons
confused? Now there is a solution. The new VP Remote Control has
large easy-to-read buttons, making it more comfortable to use with
your VP. The remote is about as wide as a sheet of paper (8.25″), so it is easy to handle and hard to lose.

The VP Remote Control (HC-VP/REMOTE) is only $20 at Harris
Communications. It works with Sorenson, D-Link, and Blackcrow
videophone models (VP-100, nVP[nTouch], 1000, 1100, BVC-103).

- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to George Johnston
who departed us. Better known as GJ, this native of
New Jersey, he was many things – teacher, one-man comedy
show performer, athlete, deaf youth leader, sign language
instructor, and others too numerous to mention. And
most important of all, he was the pillar of the New Jersey
Deaf Community.

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

The National Deaf Children’s Society, in Great Britain, is
saying that deaf teenagers are not part of the family
communications loop – simply because they are deaf. This
group is trying to encourage hearing teenagers to always
involve the deaf in communications at all times.

If deaf tourists visit Jamaica they could stop at the
Sandals Royal Plantation, in St Ann, considered to be
one of the best hotels on the island. And to take in
a dinner. One of the chefs is Lorenzo Stephenson. He
is deaf, and just 20 years old. The hotel general
manager thinks highly of Lorenzo and feels he could move
up in the chef ranks.

A warning for would-be-deaf thieves. There are burglar alarms

DO DEAF PEOPLE WANT FREE LEGAL CLINICS?
An agency serving the deaf started legal services because
deaf clients needed attorneys to help them.
Yet, that agency had to cancel the clinic. Why? Because
there were no deaf clients that showed up to meet with
attorneys!
Do deaf people really want free legal clinics or is
it just all talk?

A FUTURE HEARING AID
For many years we have seen different types of hearing
aids – big boxes in our pockets, small boxes hidden
in our shirts, behind-the-ear hearing aids, inside-the-
ear hearing aids. Even the CI is really a hearing aid.
It is possible that we will have a new type of
hearing aid that is different. It is hidden in a person’s
tooth!
DeafDigest editor is not sure if it is a good idea -
if a dentist pulls out that bad tooth, maybe it has a
hearing aid inside it!

A FACT THAT MOST STATES WON’T TELL
As far as Deaf Education is concerned, we have 50 different
states, and therefore 50 different state deaf education laws,
not to mention district by district laws!.
This being said, there was a posting on a web site which
explains Deaf Education programs in Texas.
It says that there are three options in Texas:

Local education agency
Regional Day School Programs
Texas School for the Deaf

Many states won’t even include a state school for the
deaf as an option!

…………………………………………………………….

DON’T DRIVE AND DEAF-TEXT AT SAME TIME
It is costly in Spain to drive and text at the same
time, never mind if the driver is deaf or hearing.
Well, in Leon, a city in northwest Spain, a deaf
driver was fined 200 euros for that reason. He is upset
and plans to appeal the court ruling.
200 euros means almost $260.00.

THESE HIGH MAINTENANCE HEARING AIDS
A late-deafened group raised the issue of these
high maintenance hearing aids. Specifically they were talking about senior citizens, because of limited
use of hands, struggling just to change batteries
in their hearing aids. Another issue is difficulty
in taking out and then putting in their hearing aids
on a daily basis.
The easier options are:

- hearing aids with large battery size
- in-the-ear-hearing-aids
- using magnets to move batteries around

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

Having to come up with creative interpreting to come up
with signs for words to prevent misunderstandings.

An example by a speaker is:

I hear that

a wrong sign may give the impression that the speaker is not deaf

if you have these “hate” or “horror” stories, please

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

A question that people often ask me when they see me with the steno
machine is how fast someone can write with “one of those machines.”

Most captioners and CART providers start off as court reporters, and
so they have passed the same tests that court reporters take in court
reporting school.

In many states, court reporters must pass a test at 225 words per
minute in order to be certified. In order to achieve the Registered
Professional Reporter certification offered by the National Court
Reporters Association (NCRA), a court reporter or captioner must pass
tests at speeds up to 225 words per minute. To obtain the Registered
Merit Reporter certification, one must pass tests at speeds up to 260
words per minute.

At the NCRA annual convention, there is a speed contest where
contestants compete at speeds up to 280 words per minute.

A REASON TO BE ENVIOUS
A hearing person that works in the Wall Street, said:

I maintain job and sales leads because a lot of the social contacts were over meals, cocktails, playing squash and golf, and that one must have money for these endeavors

Yes, we have interpreters – but it is not the same thing!
So, should we be envious of those that are not deaf?
Well, all depends – every case is different.

……………………………………………………..

A DEAF EMPLOYEE ADVANTAGE IN THE WORKPLACE – continuing series

Deaf employees in the hearing workplace are often
discriminated against and are often underemployed.
But there are exceptions. One such exception is:

during high level meetings of financial services
representatives, a deaf representative knew much more than hearing representatives in subject matter – and they
always deferred to his deep knowledge!

……………………………………………………..

The Deaf and the Law:

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) does not
only cover the deaf, deaf-blind and hearing impaired students. It also covers hearing students under 10 other different disabilities.

These are:

autism, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, emotional disturbance, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury and visual impairment..

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Ronda Jo Miller, the greatest athlete of either gender
ever to play on Gallaudet athletic grounds, is now on the
pre-season roster of the Washington Mystics in the WNBA.
She just came back to the states after being voted as
the best foreign women’s basketball player in Denmark.

(editor’s note: she played one pre-season game before
being let go)

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The Forbes magazine, May 21st edition, featured a
story titled “Royal Boom.” It is about a relatively
new spectacle – called dB Drag racing. These dB road
racers drive with a goal, to steer autos with the
loudest stereos.
How loud? The goal is 194 dB, which, according
to physicists and sound engineers, would shatter
the stereo equipment!
Crazy? Yes, but it is becoming a popular event,
attracting sponsors such as Best Buy, XM Satellite
Radio and Circuit City. And some drivers spend
as much as $250,000 on the loudest stereo
equipment they could tinker with.
Do these drivers become deaf? Driving with
unprotected ears, some of them suffer from
ear ringing. And interestingly enough they
refuse to blame it on high dB levels but blame
it on something else!
Self-denial? Yes.

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Many hearing people, with deaf children, suffer from
this Magic Bullet Syndrome. The dictionary defines
this phrase as follows:

Something regarded as a magical solution or cure

They want deafness eradicated through different
methods or different ways or different types of
equipment.

A deaf child is a deaf child, no matter what!

….

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

I thought my friend said:

My jest is hurting

Jest? Yes, it is a word but it does not fit with
what he was trying to say.

He actually said:

My chest is hurting

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, May 9, 2012

– A fake-ASL song?

Seems we are having problems with entertainers trying to use fake-ASL in their acts. A Mark Nakhla video tried to mix ASL with the song “No Church in the Wild.” Mark says it is ASL, but the Deaf Community says it is sign nonsense. Only few weeks ago Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman made a huge mess of the signs they were trying.

– A weather radio being used as an alerting signal device

The NOAA Weather Radio is voice only but it could help the deaf! This radio tells hearing people of weather warnings – tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, etc. The voice is no help to the deaf – but it can be connected to an alerting signal device or a bed visbrator. And the deaf would know the there is a weather emergency. DeafDigest is not sure how it works, but the NOAA says it works.

– Will a hidden CI lead to cheating in sports?

Last week’s DeafDigest mentioned an invisible CI, hidden in the user’s ear tube. Deaflympics has a strict rule that all athletes must take off their hearing aids and CI’s on the playing field. Will we see cheating among deaf athletes that hide their CI while in competition?

– England’s planned World Wide Deaf Cultural Center

The Deaf Way, held twice in Washington, DC in the past, showed everyone what is Deaf Culture. But at end of Deaf Way, all the exhibits and events disappeared. Well, A deaf group in England wants a “permanent” Deaf Way. They want to call it “Embassy to the world’s deaf community.” And it would be in Preston, Lancashire. Will it succeed? The project needs money for a big exhibit hall and staff. But the location is a big if – because it is not in London.

– A 7-sign statue in a restaurant

If you dine at Rasika West in Washington, DC you will see a statue of a hand that shows the sign for seven. A sign for seven, not really, but in India, that “seven” sign means prosperity. Take a look at: http://deafdigest.com/videos/sign-for-seven-in-india/

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Everyone in Arkansas roots for the Razorbacks football
team of University of Arkansas. Each game is an
event, much helped by the marching band. One of the
members of the band will be Mitchell Moore, an
incoming freshman. Moore is deaf.

Sarah Hajjar is a medical school student at University
of Calgary. She is deaf and a product of mainstreaming
programs in Edmonton. How did she overcome problems
with the stethoscope? She connects it to a visual
display. Another method is to connect it to her CI.
After she graduates with a medical degree she is
contemplating a career in audiological sciences.

- Very Hot News

Georgia did not follow the ADA when it comes to the
needs of deaf residents of group homes. This was
what U.S. District Judge Richard Story ruled.
He said there are no mental care workers that know
ASL, thus placing the deaf residents at risk.

- Thursday May 3rd

Andy Bonheyo has stepped down from his position as
football coach at Maryland School for the Deaf.
It was not an easy decision for him to make. At
Maryland he produced ten teams that were #1 among
deaf schools during his 11-year run. He previously
coached at Model Secondary School for the Deaf and
Texas School for the Deaf and also produced these
national #1 teams at both schools. He continues as
the school athletic director, saying he has some
unfinished projects and goals. Both of his sons
are Gallaudet football players. Will Andy return
to coaching? He has not ruled it out!

- Friday May 4th

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Smith Personnel
Solutions, a temp staffing agency, discriminated against a
deaf applicant that was seeking a position as a stock clerk.
The agency told her that because of her deafness her work at
the warehouse would be at risk. She filed with the EEOC and won.

- Saturday May 5th

Gallaudet has always stressed academics, especially among
many students that play on athletic teams ranging from
football to track. And speaking of football, we had a
football player - Jeff Kurz winning the 1992 National Football
Foundation scholarship award. This was a big time honor
especially when Gallaudet had problems winning football
games during the early nineties. And now this, by this
very same National Football Foundation has honored
Caleb Hinton to its National Honor Society. Caleb was
one of the important, but unsung, offensive linemen
that helped Gallaudet to a football resurgence in
these past seasons. Congrats, Caleb!

.....

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

The Food and Drug Administration is being dragged
into a feud between The Hearing Industries Association
and the hearing aid providers. Seems the manufacturers
do not want personal sound amplification devices to
portray themselves as "hearing aids" - whereas the
providers say these are important hearing aid accessories.

IMPORTANT DEAF ACTORS
We have a few deaf actors that are very important.
Important? Why?
They play deaf roles in police, fire and SWAT
emergency training films. These hearing officers
watch the training films to learn how to deal with
a deaf person.
They learn that deaf hands are most important
of all - for writing notes, for gesturing and
for using ASL with interpreters.

HEARING EMPLOYEE'S PANIC ATTACKS
A hearing employee works in the same room with
a deaf employee. This hearing person is friendly,
always laughing and always joking around.
But when there is a need for a simple communication
with a deaf employee to discuss a routine work
matter, then this hearing employee suffers panic
attacks.
He never has panic attacks with other hearing
employees, always with that deaf employee.

IT ALMOST NEVER FAILS
It almost never fails - that a deaf person grows
up avoiding the deaf, going to a hearing college,
avoiding sign language and then graduates and then
goes job seeking.
And where do they find their jobs - either at
Gallaudet or NTID or a deaf school or a deaf agency!
One must get a job in order to have a roof over
his head and food on his dinner table!

THE 888 OPTION
What is the 888 option? We have no such option on our
TV sets in USA. But in Great Britain, every deaf person knows
what is the 888 option.
It is a special button on the TV sets to turn on or to turn off
captions.
And speaking of turning off captions, there was a debate
among some British deaf people - some want captions only and
to suppress the sign language window. Others want the other
way around.
 Sounds familiar in USA!

A DEAF POLITICAL CANDIDATE
From time to time we read of deaf individuals wanting to
run for an office in public elections. A few of them have won
elections.
The list of deaf political officers is at:
http://deafdigest.com/elected-deaf-officials/
The latest deaf person is Simeon Hart, a deaf British
man, who is running for election as a Green Party candidate
for a Central Ward in Liverpool.
He was recently interviewed for a newspaper story.
He admitted his chances for winning is dim because his
political party is not a popular one in his Ward.

Highly hearing impaired? As if he is almost

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Is it possible for a deaf person to run a business
whose clientele is 100 percent hearing?

A. Yes, but it is not easy. The most successful deaf
business owners that DeafDigest editor knows hires
hearing employees to deal with hearing clients -
whereas the deaf owner stays in the background but
always staying on top of things.

Reading the menu at a restaurant is difficult these days.

I have very narrow tunnel vision, so the low vision specialist

I would need to hold the menu closer to my face and it is too narrow

So he recommended a hand held magnifier with a light. It's a work for

An Invitation to Apply for the Position of President
Willie Ross School for the Deaf
Longmeadow, MA

Founded by parents -providing excellence in education one child at a time.

THE SEARCH
The Willie Ross School for the Deaf (WRSD) seeks an inspirational and
energetic President to shape the next stage of growth for this distinctive
organization. The President will provide direction to the School and serve
as its public face, leading advocate, and operational steward. S/he will
build on the momentum created by a dedicated board, veteran staff, and the
outgoing President, Dr. Louis Abbate, who will be stepping down in 2013
after 28 years in the role. The ideal candidate will be an experienced
educational or nonprofit leader and strong communicator with a deep
commitment to the needs of deaf children and their families. This is an
outstanding opportunity to lead a school with a reputation for innovation
that aims to provide for the evolving intellectual, social, and emotional
needs of each and every student.

Located in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, WRSD is a private school that was
founded in 1967 by parents who wanted a day school option for their deaf
children. With a model that allows students to learn at its Longmeadow
Campus as well as in East Longmeadow public schools, WRSD is a pioneer in
the mainstreaming of deaf students. Its simultaneous communication model -
combining English-based sign language with spoken language - underscores
the school's prioritization of individual student needs above any
particular approach or philosophy. WRSD continues to expand its offerings
in order to be as responsive as possible to its student body. In addition
to its campus-based programs, WRSD offers an array of audiological and
educational services to students in 20 communities in Central and Western
Massachusetts. With its educational partnership model, the School has
become a national thought leader in deaf education and stands poised to
take the next step in its evolution.

The President reports to the Board of Trustees and oversees a school that
enrolls 63 students and reaches about 200 more through its outreach
division. The 48-person WRSD staff includes four senior administrators,
faculty, interpreters, audiologists, counselors, and speech therapists.
The ideal candidate will have senior leadership experience at an
institution with a focus on educating students with special needs. S/he
should be experienced in reaching out to community leaders, policy makers,
parents, and educational experts. S/he should have a passion for educating
children and possess strong entrepreneurial instincts.

WRSD has retained the national executive search firm Isaacson, Miller to
assist in this recruitment. All inquiries, nominations/referrals, and
resumes with cover letters, should be sent electronically and in
confidence to:
