Gallaudet quarterback Paul Hubbard is credited
with inventing the footbball huddle during the
1894 football season. Gallaudet had games
scheduled against New York School for the Deaf
and Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and
Hubbard did not want these two deaf opponents
stealing his signals.

There is one secret with Hubbard that many
football fans were not aware of. As a
quarterback, he handed off the ball and stayed
out of the way. He did not want to be roughed
up and get hurt. Teammates said he did not have
the killer instinct needed to block and tackle
or even to be tackled while running with the ball.

Was he a timid player? Probably so!
