Al Van Nevel, who played football in high school and never played
soccer in his life, was recruited on-campus to become Gallaudet’s
goalie. He knew nothing about this sport – and the only instructions
the Gallaudet coach gave him was – just stop all shots from going in!
He played between the 1959 and 1962 seasons.
He did his job so well; the weak Gallaudet defense allowed the
opponents to bombard him with shots at will. At the end of
his 4-season career, he was asked by the USA National Soccer
Association to tryout for the USA national Pan Am team.
He came to the tryouts and found about a half dozen goalies
competing with him. He did not make the team, but at least
he did Gallaudet proud by showing up at the tryouts.
