Possibly the greatest feat in football coaching

What was the biggest coaching accomplishment of the late Jess Smith, former
NAD president, former Deaf America editor and former assistant superintendent
of Indiana School for the Deaf?

coaching the 1984 football team to a 4-4 record, overcoming a 0-2 start,
after taking over the reins at the last minute when the school was not
able to hire a new head coach; he had not coached football for many
years, and only had 20 boys on the team, and he was out of touch with
the latest football coaching trends.

He simply stayed with the basics, nothing fancy, no gimmicks, no
tricks.

That was his last hurrah as he had no desire to coach again but
someone had to step in and coach at the last minute.
