Long Beach State University no longer has a football
team but years ago, it did.
In the 1977 season, the offensive coordinator
used ASL to give plays to the quarterback.
The wife of the head coach Dave Currey, was
a teacher of the deaf, and she taught him ASL.
So for that season, ASL only was used to
communicate with the quarterback. Did it
help? Well, Long Beach had a 4-6 record
in that season. It was a one-season
experiment because the coach never again
used ASL on the football field.
To prevent enemy teams from spying on
ASL communications, there were two
ASL-signing decoys on both sides of
the offensive coordinator. Only the
quarterback knew who were the decoys!
