movies-first-oscar-for-deaf-role

Credit goes to Marlee Matlin for winning the
Oscar for her deaf role. First time ever?

Well, in the 1948 movie, Johnny Belinda,
the deaf role was played by a hearing actress –
Jane Wyman. She won an Oscar for playing that
deaf role. In 1948 it was “impossible” for
a deaf actress to play a deaf role.

So, while Marlee became the first deaf
person to win an Oscar, she was not the first
deaf character to win an Oscar!
