Did you know that –

Nellie Willhite left her job as a typist during the early
1920’s because of her love of flying. She achieved these
firsts – becoming South Dakota’s first female pilot,
first deaf female pilot, the first deaf female to fly solo
coast to coast and also first deaf woman to earn a living
flying an airplane, as a professional barnstormer and then
as a professional airmail carrier. She passed away in
1991.
