Top stories about the deaf:

Possibly the customer service department at
Lowe’s does not do a good job of communicating
with deaf customers. A deaf woman ordered
flooring boxes and requested delivery to her
house. She negotiated with the service people
on delivery date, time and total costs, and
she was given the impression all was clear and
understood. They never told her the boxes would
be delivered to the curb of her house, not into
the house itself. She made such a big stink out
of it that Lowe’s apologized for not making it
clear – but she still ended up delivering the
boxes from the curb to her house. Fortunately
for her, the friendly neighbors helped out.

………..

An issue coming up in Oregon is the
Oregon State ASL Interpreter Licensure.
A Town Hall event has taken place to
address these concerns.

……….

On the legislative floor in Indiana
is the Public TV Caption Bill, meaning
captions everywhere. Interesting to see how
legislators would react to it.

…………….

A business consultant said that a video
board that lists product choices, details
and prices would be best for deaf customers.

………………

formula-based hiring rules (by the computer)

In the day of computers, more employers are using
formula-based programs to hire employees. Advocates
are saying it discriminates against the deaf –
for one reason – deaf people may not fit within
the formula “guidelines.” If this is the case,
then more and more ADA lawsuits are coming up!

THE SUPER BOWL AND THE DEAF SUPER BOWL
The Super Bowl is coming up next week. It is the most
important event for football fans and for advertisers
that advertise on TV (with captions, we hope).
What is the Deaf Super Bowl? It is the NAD Conference,
every two years.
Why? Because deaf vendors and deaf businesses show
their most important products and services at the NAD
Conference exhibit booths!
The Super Bowl and the Deaf Super Bowl – same thing!

Top stories about the deaf:

Joanne Weber, a deaf educator, has been selected as
Canada Research Chair in Deaf Education. She said it
is a big honor.

……….

Staff interpreters or Independent interpreters?

What is the difference? Staff interpreters do
not have to wake up at 2 AM to rush to an
emergency, such as police stops, hospital
emergency rooms, family illness, etc.
Independent interpreters can, if they are
willing to get up at 2 AM!

This clarification was made in a posting.

……….

On the floor in Indiana legislation is the
Parents with Disabilities Act. It didn’t pass
last year and advocates are hoping it will
pass this year.

……..

A newspaper story said that for the lack of
sign language interpreters, deaf patients
suffer worse health problems than hearing
patients.

………

ADA lawsuits do not always pay off. A deaf
man filed a job discrimination lawsuit
against the New York City Transit Authority
and lost. During the bench trial, the
Southern District of New York said the
plaintiff could not prove through federal,
state or city laws that he was discriminated
against.

A DeafDigest subscriber, when entering a busy restaurant,
always gives his name as “deaf” on the sign up chart.
When the “deaf” name comes up, the hostess knows it is
a deaf person and will tell him that his table is ready.
He was afraid that if he gave the hostess his name,

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

We have seen that many captioners write the long “o” sound in steno as OE.
Since they write primarily phonetically, captioners have to figure out
ways to distinguish words that sound the same but are spelled differently.

One group of such words might include Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores and
Loews Hotels. You also have things that might be “low” and “lo and
behold.” You also have the prefix and suffix of “lo.” You also have JLo
and Robb Lowe. Even the spelling “lough” can be pronounced with a long “o”
sound.

Some captioners might choose to use an asterisk with the vowels to help
differentiate, so it might be written O*E. They also might choose to write
it O without the E.

With many different spellings for one sound, this can be a rather
difficult differentiation for some captioners, so some mistakes may
happen.

Some examples of this would be:
Home Depot and lows competed for the business.
She wore the furlough across her shoulders.
To the travel buffaloes is well-known.

These should be:
Home Depot and Lowe’s competed for the business.
She wore the fur low across her shoulders.
To the travel buff Loews is well-known.

While he is deaf without his double CI, he functions as a

Major airports across the world have been

8, she still wanted a career in music.
But that her parents, both of them amateur
musicians, tried to discourage her. They

LIBRARY AT MARTHA’S VINEYARD
Many of us know that there were many generations of
deaf people that lived on Martha’s Vineyard. And that hearing
people in the town used sign language to communicate with
the deaf.
A deaf group took a tour and stopped at the library at
Martha’s Vineyard to see if there were any ancestors
in their family trees.
The librarian showed them the birth-and-death book.
Those that were deaf were marked as “deaf.”
If a deaf person wants to do research, it is a tough
job because the library did not have deaf genealogical
files in the computer.

THE DEAFLYMPICS AND THE DEAF CULTURE
We have the Deaflympics, where the best deaf athletes
from all over the world compete against each other
in many different sports.
Does Deaflympics help improve Deaf Culture? Yes and no!
A high percentage of participants in Deaflympics are
oralists, late-deafened, hard of hearing that function as

These people are most likely not part of Deaf Community.
And when the Deaflympics is over, they go back to their

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Patrick
Robinson, from Alabama, that departed us.

He was one of the most powerful deaf Black leaders
– outstanding in Deaf Education, great coach in
Deaf Sports, leader with the National Deaf Black
Advocates as well as with other organizations
serving the deaf.

Professionally, he served as the director of the
Talladega Regional Center then moved on to
Executive Director of E. H. Gentry Facility.

Kurk Darnell, who is deaf and a cartoonist,
loves dwarf chameleons and is worried about
this creature being driven into extinction.
He has drawn up a cartoon book, designed for
children, hoping they will help prevent
extinction.

……….

Every state operates differently as far as
dealing with the needs of the deaf is
concerned. The Pennsylvania Office for the
Deaf and Hearing Impaired is just one of the
seven different departments that one of
the governor’s committees would oversee. That
means the deaf group must fight to get
attention to its needs, competing against
six other groups! This is not great.

……….

A deaf inductee into Green Bay Packers Fans
Hall of Fame? Jeff Padon, who lives in Maryland,
but is a 100 percent loyal Packers fan, has
been nominated for this honor. Why is a Packers
fan living in Maryland? He graduated from
Gallaudet and is employed in Maryland.

……..

A job coach pointed out three workplace issues – Do deaf
employees get what they need? Is there a good working
relationship between deaf and hearing employees? And
when employees go out for lunch or for after-hours social
events, are deaf employees left out of it?

………

Chemists with Disabilities has honored a team that

A WASTED ACTING ROLE
What is a waste of time with deaf actors
in hearing movies?
A deaf person would be hired to act in a
hearing film. The role may be small, maybe just
one short scene.
And when the filming is finished, the film
editors would cut out the deaf character.
The deaf community would come to watch the
movie and be disappointed in not seeing the
deaf actor.
A waste of time for everyone. It has
happened from time to time in the past.

This week’s ASL video in youtube:

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

We have been looking at how captioners write vowels and vowel sounds.
Because captioners write primarily phonetically and not how the word is
spelled, many captioners will use the steno AU for the “aw” sound.

This may include words like “paw” and “saw,” but it also will include
words like “ball,” “talk,” and “taught.” In addition to words with an “a,”
it may also include words such as “thought” and “fought.”

Mistakes can happen if the captioner mistakenly uses the OU steno instead
of the AU.

Some examples of this would be:
She bout a new car.
He tout at a new school.
She thought she out to do better.

These should be:
She bought a new car.
He taught at a new school.
She thought she ought to do better.
