DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Audree Norton
that departed us. She was our #1 deaf actress, many
years before Marlee Matlin came on board. She appeared
on TV sitcoms, TV commercials and was one of the founding
members of the National Theater of the Deaf.

SOME MOVIE DIRECTORS ARE HYPOCRITES
There are many movies with deaf characters that are
played by fake-deaf actors using bad ASL.
There are directors that say they want deaf actors
but cannot find a good deaf actor.
They audition many, many deaf actors but reject
them all and pick one hearing actor.
As a result, deaf community is angry. The movie
director just shrugs his shoulder!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

A Coda, while doing “personal services” interpreting for
deaf parents, was asked to interpret a Hearing Joke.
He knew his deaf parents would not understand the Hearing
Joke. To save face for everyone concerned, the Coda cued,
in signs, to have deaf parents “fake-laugh” at the
“Hearing Joke.”

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

When some people see a steno machine up close for the first time,
they are often amazed that there are so few keys. They cannot
understand how a stenocaptioner or court reporter can write all of
the words they write.

Because there are only 22 keys plus a number bar on a steno machine,
stenocaptioners must use combinations of letters to make other
letters. The only keys actually present on a steno keyboard are
STKPWHRAO*EUFRPBLGTSDZ. All words and phrases and every sound made in
the English language must be written using only those letters.

The letters on the left-hand side of the keyboard are used for the
initial consonants in words, and the letters on the right-hand side
of the keyboard are used for the final consonants. What that means is
that a captioner will use his/her left hand for initial consonants,
his/her thumbs for vowels, and his/her right hand for final
consonants.

Stenocaptioners do not depress one key at a time. Rather, whole words
and phrases are written at the same time, as if someone were striking
a chord on a piano.

A school for the deaf was slated to be closed by
the state. A group of impatient parents was not
willing to go through the local due process –
re these public hearings. Instead, they went
straight to the court – and it backfired.

For whatever it is worth, the Coalition for
Movie Captioning may be weakened thanks to defections.
To open caption the movies or to rear window
the movies has become the divisive issue affecting
charter coalition members, especially in the New Jersey
lawsuit.
As a consequence, AGBell and the League for the
Hard of Hearing both dropped out of the coalition
– and the Self Help for the Hard of Hearing is
unsure on what to do.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Why is it that hearing employers take their deaf employees
for granted, not giving them opportunities for advancement,

person announces his retirement, the employer is desperate,

much more about the job than the hearing employees that
rank higher and earn more money?

Position Description:
The ASSDHH Director is responsible for the administration and
oversight of the Alaska State School for the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing (ASSDHH) from preschool through the high school grades.

The Director is also responsible for the direct supervision
and evaluation of various ASSDHH special education staff and
related services providers.  This position will research,
develop and implement curriculum and programs related to Deaf
Education, as well as collaborate with the school principal
in the evaluation of certificated and classified special
education/related services (ASSDHH) staff. Hiring and
assignments will be reviewed with the school principal to
assure appropriate input and alignment with school staff.

Job Requirements:
Valid Alaska Type B administrative certificate

Minimum 3 years administrative experience

endorsement in Deaf Education

Fluency in English and American Sign Language demonstrated
by the Advanced level or above on the ASLPI or comparable

Two BSW Tenure-Track Faculty Positions, Department of Social Work

Gallaudet University serves deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students
from many different backgrounds and seeks to develop a workforce that
reflects the diversity of its student body. Gallaudet is an equal

General Information:  The Department of Social Work has graduate (MSW) and
undergraduate (BSW) programs, both accredited by the Council on Social
Work Education (CSWE).  The BSW program has approximately 50 majors
enrolled annually who represent diverse backgrounds, cultures, learning
styles, and educational experiences.  The overwhelming majority of the
undergraduates are deaf or hard of hearing.  The position is contingent
upon funding.

Responsibilities:  There are two available positions.  Both are full time,
nine-month, tenure track BA Social Work faculty positions.  Under our
current department model, incumbents will be responsible for oversight and
instruction of the micro and macro practice sequences in the curriculum.
Incumbents will be responsible for infusing research-based content and
multicultural content into practice courses at all levels to reflect
evidenced based practice.  Incumbents are responsible for ongoing course
development for both on campus and distance education, for assessment
purposes for the Office of Academic Quality and CSWE reaffirmation and
other compliance-related activities, advising students, service to the
department, university, and community; and, involvement in scholarly and
professional activities. The instructor rank requires an MSW and the
assistant professor rank requires a Ph.D.

Minimum Qualifications:
1.      Candidates must have an MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program
with three (3) years post-MSW social work practice experience.  If an
incumbent does not have a completed Ph.D., (s)he will be expected to
complete a doctoral program prior to all tenure and promotion actions; a
plan for obtaining a Ph.D. should be addressed in the application.
2.      Candidates must provide evidence of teaching ability (e.g., higher
education courses, professional workshops, presentations, online
teaching).
3.      Candidates must have experience working with linguistic and
culturally diverse Deaf communities.
4.      Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is highly desirable;
if not already proficient a new faculty member must develop proficiency in
ASL in accordance with Gallaudet University guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:
.       Current, valid Master-level social work licensure or
license-eligible (for the micro-practice position, a license is required
within 1 year of appointment).
.       Expertise in teaching a diverse student population, including Deaf
and hard of hearing students with various learning styles and learning
needs.
.       Experience in active social work research and record of scholarly
activities (e.g., publications, presentations, program assessments and
evaluations, grant-writing activities).

Position Purpose
Supervises the Vocational, Deafblind and Special Services, and Tutoring
programs which provide the following services to New Mexicans who are
deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind including those with significant
disabilities:  case management/service coordination, advocacy, emergency
support, tutoring, job development and placement, skills training, 1:1
support services, access technology, etc.  Assures that programs comply
with contractual requirements of funding sources.  Plans, develops, and
conducts professional development trainings to ensure high quality service
delivery and compliance with established Agency policies and procedures.
Conducts community outreach and training activities which promote
awareness of services as well as local capacity.  Assists in program
budget development. Position may from time to time be stressful and

Essential Functions
.       Oversees the daily operations of the Vocational, the Deafblind and
Special Services, Tutoring programs which provides case management/service

.       Monitors both programs to assure the delivery of high quality

response to clients and contractual needs.
