- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Charalampos
Grammatoglou, a young deaf basketball referee from
Greece. He departed us last week in an accident
at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
in Arizona.

He was in Washington, DC to take part at the international
deaf basketball referees clinic at Gallaudet University.
He then continued on his vacation trip to Arizona
when he met his untimely death.

- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:

a deaf postman delivers a real live baby
http://deafdigest.com/iangallagher/

a deaf person and a deaf-blind person on Appalachian trail hike
http://deafdigest.com/dianedinger/

- Very Hot News

President Obama signs a bill that intends to increase
employment for the disabled, the deaf included within
a 5-year span.

The targeted goal is 100,000 disabled and deaf people added
to employment ranks.

- Sunday July 25th

Those interested in adopting a deaf child would do well to
subscribe to a free deaf adoption email list. It shares with
subscribers information on available deaf kids, ready for
adoption.

Do email mailto:deb@skjeveland.us to request subscription to
the mailing list.

- Monday July 26th

Did the Baseball Hall of Fame committee improve the chances
of Dummy Hoy's induction in the future?

The rules have been changed. There will be three new categories;
Pre-Integration (1871-1946), Golden (1947-1972) and Expansion
(starting in 1973).

There will be a list of candidates in each category, and Hoy's
category will have 10 candidates every year.

In the past, the Old Timers was one big category with Hoy having
to compete against most recent old timers. Hopefully not any more.

- Tuesday July 27th

Up-to-date vaccinations for deaf children are a must, says
The American Academy of Pediatrics, meaning those that are
CI candidates. Details are being published in the August

IS ADA STRONG OR WEAK?
Is ADA strong or weak? ADA is 20 years old but
we are always having problems. Almost every week we
read in newspapers about lawsuits against doctors
and hospitals. They would not give us interpreters.
ADA is very strong if hearing people have strong
attitude and want to help the deaf. ADA is very
weak if hearing people have bad attitudes about us.
ADA strong or weak? You decide!

A DIFFERENT DEAF SOCIAL LIFE
We have our own Deaf Social life. Some of us
go to deaf clubs, some go to deaf churches,
some go to deaf sporting events, some go to school
alumni reunions, etc.
Some deaf people do not go out and have a
social life. Yes, they have a social life but it is
different. They work at Gallaudet or NTID or at
schools for the deaf where there are many deaf
employees. When they work all day with their deaf
friends, it becomes their daily social life.
It is the same with deaf people at factories
where many other deaf people work there, too.
On weekends, they stay home because they get
tired of seeing the same old deaf faces every
day at work!

THE CHANGING OF SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
At one time, years ago, South Dakota School for
the Deaf was a thriving institution.
Times have changed. The school serves the state
of South Dakota with outreach work. The oral and
CI programs have been transferred to the
Brandon Valley School District.
And the school's ASL program has just been
transferred to the Harrisburg School District.
    DeafDigest finds it troubling.

THE DEAF AND THE SHOP TALK
A deaf man quit his job as network engineer.
Reason for him for leaving his job was his
frustration at being left out of shop talk.
His associates would get together to discuss the
latest developments with computer networks, tricks
and tips. This deaf man was left out in the old.
Ashley Fiolek, who is deaf, is the world's best
female motocross racer. In a recent newspaper
story it said:

She did not hear her fellow motorcycle racers
talk about how steep the drop is from the peristyle
or how big the jumps will be.

We, the deaf, have to overcome being left out of
such shop talk to succeed in our professions.

AN ON-GOING DEAF YAHOOGROUP DISCUSSION
There is an on-going deaf yahoogroup discussion.
The topic was:

hearing aid versus cochlear implant

Interestingly enough, there are hearing aid
supporters that prefer the ads over CI.

A NOVEL PATTERNED ON ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL
A novel is hitting the British book stores. The title
is "C" by author Tom McCarthy.
This is not a joke; C is, indeed, the title. The plot
revolves around Serge Carrefax. His father operated a school
for the deaf; his mother was deaf and was one of the father's
students.
Pretty much an Alexander Graham Bell look-alike. The
novel, however, is not-deaf related.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked:

I notice you are fingerspelling a lot; don't you know the
signs for the words you are spelling?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As many of you know, the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA)
is the organization that represents judicial reporters, realtime
captioners, and CART providers across the country.  Members of NCRA
are meeting in Chicago this week for their 2010 Annual Convention
and Exposition with the theme of "Striving for New Heights."

>From August 4th through 8th, there will be seminars, workshops,
networking events, and other opportunities for court reporters and
captioning and CART professionals to meet and learn more about what
is on the horizon in our industry.  Speed and realtime contests will
be held to showcase the talents of some of the best steno writers in
our business.

Because people in the broadcast television industry and the business
world will still continue to need our services, there will probably
be some captioning and remote CART provided from hotel rooms in the
Hilton Chicago, where the convention is taking place.  So when you
watch your favorite live television show this week, you might wonder
where that captioner is.  Could he or she be in a hotel room looking
out over Lake Michigan?

BANNED FROM MUSIC PLAYING FOR 10 YEARS
Tracy Lyons, a deaf British woman, has been banned from
playing music for 10 years.
Her crime? In possession of 18 speakers, six CD players, two TVs,
a mixing deck, a tuner radio and a PlayStation. Needless to say,
her loud music playing generated numerous complaints from her
neighbors.
    Her excuse was this:

I'm one of the quietest people on the street. Everyone else plays
their music, their kids scream non-stop and I have to put up with
a very noisy bus stop 24 hours a day. I'm deaf so my tunes never
sound loud to me

The magistrate didn't buy the excuse and slapped her with
a hefty fine and a 10-year ban.

I THOUGHT THE DEAF COULD.......

be an authority on hearing loss issues

no deaf person is an expert on everything that relates
to hearing loss. A deaf person may not understand CI
issues or may not understand what Cued Speech is all
about or understand what alternative sign languages
are all about, and so on.

when a hearing person never meets a deaf person in his life
his knowledge of the deaf are often wrong

The Deaf and the Law:

- location

- case
a woman, who became deaf as a child because of
meningitis as a child, filed a claim for compensation
from her physiican that treated her years ago

- result
she suffered a double defeat; the judge cleared the

compensation

- comment
this is strange that this woman would wait many years

many years back?

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Max Sallop,
Revere, MA, who departed us last week.
A naysayer may say that a deaf man cannot drive
an ice cream truck because of the need to hear
neighborhood children screaming for the truck to stop.
Max had been a long time testimony to how wrong these
naysayers are.
Selling ice cream provided Max with a comfortable
lifestyle while providing for his family. And going
one up, he even mentored hearing hirees on the nuances
of ice cream vending!
Not just that, he was also a deaf community leader
with a long list of accomplishments beyond DeafDigest's
limited space.
In case you are wondering, yes, Max's son Marvin
was a long time educator, and formerly served Texas
School for the Deaf as the superintendent.
Thank you Max for showing the hearing public what
a deaf person could do in the business world.

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Amid much celebrating over the 20 years of ADA, one
fact escapes us. ADA regulations would have never
existed in the first place in the perfect world -
meaning positive attitude by the non-disabled
when dealing with the deaf and the disabled.

But because the non-disabled do not fairly treat
the deaf and the disabled, ADA had to be forced
on them.

......

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A lipreading challenge at a party when everyone was
having a great time were these words:

practically 100 percent of deaf partygoers thought it
was:
