DeafDigest dedicates this edition to David Conyer, who
departed us. When NTID needed to produce films, movies
and videos, he was the man to see.

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Sebastien Lathuile, not deaf, is a French transplant in China, is a
florist with a booming business in several big Chinese cities. When
hiring people, his #1 priority is hiring the deaf. And he currently
has a number deaf florists under his employ.

Did NFL ever have a head coach that was deaf? Sort of. It
was mentioned in a newspaper story that Blanton Collier, who
coached Cleveland Browns from 1963 to 1970, had to leave
the coaching profession because of his deafness. He led the
team to a NFL championship in 1964. At that time there
was no Super Bowl. He passed away in 1983.

– Very Hot News

A while ago DeafDigest mentioned an interpreter at Oregon’s
Occupy Portland who was beaten up by the cops. The interpreter,
James Bridges, has testified during the Portland City Council hearing regarding police brutality. He said he surfaced as an
interpreter at the last minute when he saw several deaf protesters and knew they needed interpreting. His injuries are still severe and might be permanent.

– Sunday December 4th

Futurist Ray Kurzweil, not deaf, has been announced as the
keynote speaker at the GoFredX event in New Brunswick.
This event encourages young inventors to invent anything
that will help the mankind, especially the deaf and the
disabled. Kurzwell has been credited for inventing the
text-to-speech software that is supposed to help the deaf.

– Monday December 5th

Corey Reutlinger, a student at Hastings College in
Nebraska, has won many awards while competing at the
national collegiate forensics circuit. He is deaf.
Not sure if it is criminal forensics or forensics
of something else.

– Tuesday December 6th

The Australian Sign Language will be part of the
national educational agenda. This decision by the
Australian educational group was applauded by Deaf
Australia.

– Wednesday November 7th

Jack Kelly is the vice-captain of his beach patrol club
in Australia. He is deaf – yet he is responsible for the
safety of Australians that surf the beach waves.

– Deaf Miscellaneous stuff

Candidates for police cadet jobs that wear hearing aids
cannot be discriminated against. This was the agreement
that the Illinois State Police reached with the Department
of Justice. The discriminatory wording was this:

if the applicant has a hearing loss and was not permitted the use of assistive devices, such as a hearing aids

THE DOCTOR’S MASK
We have a few deaf physicians. All of them are afraid
of the masks that surgeons use while in the operating
room.
It is impossible for a deaf doctor to lipread other
doctors if masks hide their lips.
For one deaf doctor, he was surprised when other
doctors told him that in the operating room they don’t
talk about the operation itself, but talk about sports,
dogs, weather, politics, etc!

A COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE BEFORE THE TTY
The first TTY was manufactured in 1964, but the
TTY network did not grow until the early 1970’s.
We, the deaf, had a good communications device,
but it was not too popular. The high cost of leasing
the device prevented many deaf people from using it.
The device was the Electrowriter. It was almost
like a TTY, except that the caller would write out
his message on an electronic pad with his electronic
pen. The Electrowriter on the other end of the telephone
line would copy the handwritten message. And
communications would go on back and forth.
Yes, if the writer had a lousy penmanship, it
would be hard to read the message!
Gallaudet University used this Electrowriter
network in a few offices on the campus.
The popularity of the TTY immediately killed
the Electrowriter.

THESE ELECTED DEAF PUBLIC OFFICIALS
DeafDigest maintains a list of elected deaf public officials,
current and past. Yet this list may not be necessarily complete.
It is because many towns and cities do not make it known that
they may have had elected deaf officials.
A perfect example is Diego Lombana, a deaf elected member of the
Asemblea Nacional of Panama.
It was a Gallaudet University press release that caught the
attention of DeafDigest editor.

A DEAF COMIC BOOK CHARACTER MAKING AN ENEMY?
Echo is a deaf character in the Moon Knight comic book series.
And she is friends with the leading character.
There was a posted hint on a web site that Echo may no longer
be friends with the main character.
DeafDigest does not read comics and so, has no clue as to
what is going on.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

A question that people often ask me is:  “Who hired you to be
here?”  What they are really usually asking is:  “Who is paying
you?”

Some people think that the users or consumers of our services have to
pay for a CART provider to be present at an event.  However, usually
a college, university, court, company, or agency will hire the CART
provider because they are required to provide accommodations or equal
access under the law.

There are a number of laws that govern accessibility for people with
a hearing loss, including the American with Disabilities Act (ADA),
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Some people with a hearing loss think that they could not use the
services of a CART provider because they could not afford to pay for
them.  But most public and many private entities are obligated to
provide communication access.  These include places of employment,
public and private educational institutions, and performances and
events open to the public.

If you or someone you know could benefit from the services of a CART
provider, you may want to investigate your rights to equal access
under the law.

TEN YEARS ON THE JOB
Charles Dilbeck was a famous architect, designing and building
these fancy homes in the Dallas area. He passed away in 1990.
A house buyer wanted his house to look exactly the same as a
Dilbeck-styled home. He hired Steven Guest, a woodworker. Guest
spent ten years on the job, creating “miracles” such as
double folding hinged doors that would hide shelves, vent
screens that looked like those in the 18th century, a 500-pound
entrance door that fit with the curving walls.
What about it? Guest is deaf. He does not use sign language,
though.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED

There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language  – and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers – and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.

True or false?

DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:

An oral deaf person, isolated from the ASL-community all
his life, became part of that community as he got older.
He started to date an ASL-signing girl friend and soon
afterwards, they became an item. Because this oral
deaf person lacked social skills, thanks to years of
isolation, he could not cope with his girl friend
idly chatting with other friends at deaf social events. He became possessive, ordering her not to socialize with other deaf people. The relationship got worse and worse, and she split from him and married someone else.

Howard Gorrell’s lawsuits, end of series

(deaf activist Howard Gorrell will fight for what he believes –
legal rights and legal needs of the deaf; he is currently
involved with the lawsuit against state of Maryland over
congressional redistricting issue. In a short series, DeafDigest

at events they wish to attend.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

In the backyard of the American School for the
Deaf (ASD), West Hartford, CT, something strange
seemed to be going on, according to clueless
neighbors.
Three houses, sitting next to each other on
Fern Street, suddenly had “For Sale” signs
propped up in front.
Was there a neighborhood feud that involved
these three households? Or was is it something
spooky, despite Halloween being gone for a month
and half?
Nope. These three houses were owned by ASD
for years for occupancy by some staff members.
Times have changed and school priorities have
changed, hence these 3 surprise “For Sale” signs.

The first hearing person tells the second hearing person that his son is deaf.

That second hearing person thinks that he needs to shout much louder than usual to help the deaf son
hear the conversation

The first hearing person should have explained
that his deaf son is deaf as in deaf and not

things

Technical Sales Engineer, Large Accounts

Technical Sales Engineer, Large Accounts combines technical knowledge with sales skills to provide support on a range of products/services to our clients that are deaf organizations of all sizes. The Sales Engineer will be interacting with the Clients. Operation, HR, and Technical teams. The emphasis of the work varies depending on the level of technical knowledge needed to sell a particular product/service.

Technical sales engineers are a key point of contact for our large accounts providing services to organizations in which there are  multiple deaf and hard of hearing users  like Universities and educational institutions. The ideal Technical Sales Engineer will provide both pre- and post- sales support. They will drive the technical implementation as a project manager. They liaise regularly with other member of the sales team and colleagues from a range of departments such as Information Technology, Research/ Development, and Quality Assurance.

Fluency in American Sign Language is a requirement for this role.

Typical Work activities

Tasks typically involve:
–    Searching for new clients who might benefit from Purple’s products and services
–    Develop long term relationships with clients through managing and interpreting their requirements
–    Create manage and drive tasks on project implementation
–    Providing pre-sales technical assistance, product education, and post-sales support services
–    Preparing reports for management
–    Meeting regular sales targets and coordinating sales projects
–    Support marketing activities by attending trade shows, conferences and other marketing events
–    Making technical presentations and demonstrating how a product meets client’s needs

–    Able to make effective presentations or demonstrations in time constrained situations
–    Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
–    Knowledge of voice and video technologies and protocols
–    Knowledge of voice and video integrations
–    Knowledge of standard corporate security practices
–    Knowledge of TCP/UDP port allocation through corporate firewalls
–    Knowledge and experience with network infrastructure device (i.e. cisco switches/routers/firewalls)
–    Working knowledge of packet capturing applications (i.e. wireshark)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time:
–    Sitting, standing and walking (95-100%) –    Keyboarding (40-60%) –    Viewing computer monitor, videophone, and pager requiring close vision –    May be required to set up booths at events, requiring balance and lifting up to 50 pounds. –    May lift or move boxes (up to 10 pounds)

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Frequent travel to company, customer and vendor sites, including some that are out of state is required.

Under the supervision of the Jr.Sr. High school and CATS principal, instructs students in PrintWorks, to include Academics, Deaf with Special Needs (DSN)  PACES students and Adult Vocational Students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Associates Degree.  Prefer Bachelors Degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or Vocational Area with ability to secure State of CT Voc-Tech Teacher Certification (098 Endorsement).  Background or work experience in graphic design and printing preferred.  Excellent skills in American Sign Language. Ability to work in a collaborative setting.  Ability to work flexible hours when needed.

Position Summary
The Program Director will supervise and monitor the day to day operations of the residential and education services provided at the Pressley Ridge School for the Deaf.  They are responsible for the supervision of service delivery, staff, adherence to internal policy as well as external regulation and licensing requirements, sound fiscal operation, and communication and liaison with local community groups, schools, service agencies, and local state offices and courts of the county and stated.

A.    To ensure overall program direction and oversight to program operations, the Program Director will:

1.    Create and maintain systems for the documentation of all educational activities and uphold the confidentiality of all program records and files;
2.    Ensure that all program activities and staff practices are in compliance with the regulation and in keeping with Department of Education, DPW and Pressley Ridge policy, values, and standards of professional and ethical conduct;
3.    Develop and oversee a safety program that addresses the safety and well-being of staff and consumers in all activities and environments in which we work.

B.    To ensure solvency through adherence to the PRESSLEY RIDGE budgetary process, maximizing staff productivity and system efficiencies, and effectively using agency resources in pursuit of program goals, the Program Director will:

1.    Develop, implement and live within the program budget;
2.    Manage buildings and grounds, vehicles and equipment, and PRESSLEY RIDGE property and supplies in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE standards:
3.    Develop and manage systems for the efficient utilization of workforce by establishing staffing patterns, job designs, work schedules, and performance and productivity standards in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE values and standards;
4.    Oversee the development of educational costs and revenues, (per diems, etc.);
5.    Review and approve travel and receipt requests;
6.    Establish capital budget request.

C.    To ensure the maintenance of a full complement of competent and committed staff/treatment parents to fulfill the mission of the program and agency, the Program Director will:

1.     Develop and implement effective strategies for recruitment, screening, selection and hiring of a diverse, qualified workforce;
2.    Develop and implement effective staff development strategies including targeted training, supervision, succession planning and professional development programs aimed at enhancing staff competence, satisfaction and retention;
3.    Maintain effective performance management and evaluation system to ensure accountability;
4.    Administer an appropriate and equitable compensation program consistent with agency practices and standards;
5.    Maintain or provide oversight for the maintenance of updated HR files on every staff.
Essential Qualifications

1.    Education/Credentials/Licensure.  Master’s Degree in Education, Special Education and supervisory certification required.
2.    Experience. a.    Minimum of five years of experience working with children with severe emotional and behavioral issues,
b.    Working knowledge of the regulations and guidelines of Pennsylvania Department of Education, DPW, OMHSA as related to Approved Private School and Partial Hospital regulations
c.    Knowledge and experience in working in an educational setting utilizing strength based approaches to interventions with seriously troubled youth and their families.
d.    Understanding, commitment to and integration of the Pressley Ridge Values.  CASSP Principles and Re-Ed Program Directors
e.    Ability to work with other disciplines as part of the team.
f.    Knowledge of an a commitment to culturally competent service delivery
