Dawn Thomas as the Employee of the Year, She is deaf
and she has been with the same company for 24 years.
Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean.
Opportunities for young people in that nation is, unfortunately,
limited. But for Michael Beau, a young deaf man, he is
fortunate. He attended the Rural Training Centre, learning
to become a farmer. He currently operates his own plot,
growing vegetables and other cash crops, thus providing
a living for his family.
The federal government is suing the city of Portland,
Oregon, saying the city police mistreats the deaf
when arresting them.
The Legal Aid in the United Kingdom, because of tightening
finances, has had its budget cut. As a consequence, there is no
more legal money for the legal aid division of the Royal Association for Deaf people. This has seriously impacted on
the British deaf in need of legal assistance.
In Ireland there are 350 deaf children that need a second
implant but are on a long waiting list. Why? No money
from the government to pay for these second implants.

Every president has had a direct, or an indirect

A BIG DEAF EMBARRASSMENT AT A BANK
A deaf person, carrying a big jar of coins, went to a
bank coin counting machine. He poured these coins in the
machine and waited for it to be counted.
Several pennies were “stubborn” and could not go through
the coin machine. The deaf person then poured these same
rejected pennies into machine 4 or 5 times. The machine
still refused to accept these few pennies.
As a result, there was so much noise from the clanking
of these rejected pennies. Everyone at the bank looked at
the deaf person, who did not know about the noise.
The bank manager walked over to the deaf person and asked
him to stop with these rejected pennies.

HELPING THE DEAF IN TANZANIA
The Tanga region of the Tanzania Association of the Deaf
is asking hearing investors to set up a fund to help the deaf
establish their own businesses.
The fund is for low-interest loans for the deaf to establish
businesses in carpentry, tailoring, painting, etc.
Do we see such organizations in USA doing the same for the deaf?
Sad to say, no.

pre-school age, and ordered by the CI instructor not do any
interpreting, and watching the deaf kid squirm, not able to

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
As we celebrate this holiday season, it is fun to occasionally
reflect on our lives and the people whose lives we have touched, like
George Bailey did in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Realtime captioners, CART providers, and court reporters use their
talents and skills to touch the lives of many people on a daily
basis. Without them, things would be very different for people who
rely upon their services.
If court reporters were not in the courtroom, there would be no
record of the important proceedings that take place. They preserve
the record for appeals and provide a vital service for judges,
attorneys, and people involved in litigation.
If CART providers were not in the classrooms, meetings, offices, and
other places they provide services, many people with a hearing loss
would not be able to participate in the activities that are very
important to their lives.
If realtime captioners were not available to cover news, sports, and
other live broadcasts, people around the world would miss information
that is necessary to function in this ever-changing world we live in.
These people touch the lives of millions of people every day. It
truly is a wonderful life.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

A deaf woman was refused an interpreter by the Houston Housing Authority
when she needed assistance with her housing needs. She filed a lawsuit
and won $4,251 in back rental payments. The agency has agreed
to provide interpreters in the future.
News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
DeafDigest dedicates this week’s edition to Dr. Orin
Cornett who passed away this week. He is a Double Father –
Father of the Cued Speech and the Father of the Gallaudet
Very rare to find an individual serving as a Double Father
but Orin was it especially when he knew nothing about deafness
before assuming the Vice Presidency of Gallaudet in
(editor’s note: Cued Speech continues as a bloc in Education
of the Deaf, and its highest profile Cued Speech graduate is
Shane Feldman, who assumed the CEO position at the Registry
of Interpreters, which basically emphasizes ASL as the language
among the deaf. And as for the drum in Gallaudet football, it
is no longer used in games)
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
If the senate has its way, then we may be seeing
a new law that improves the chances of the disabled
in the higher echelon government management
levels. The bill is provide oversight of agency
willingness to promote the disabled to these
higher management levels.
Did the senate have the deaf in mind when discussing
the needs of disabled employees? Good question.
At any rate, congress is into a holiday recess
and we may not know until sometime in January.

no action; our best deaf candidates continue to be
underemployed in the higher echelons of the government)
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Certain regions in USA have better employment opportunities
than other American regions. This being said, why are we finding
many unemployed deaf people reluctant to pull up roots to take employment thousands of miles away?
Because a new job is a risk. The employer may not like the
new deaf employee on the first day of the job. As a result
this new deaf employee loses his new job just almost
DeafDigest editor has seen it happen.

The Division of Academic Affairs at Gallaudet University is in the process of undergoing an exciting change in its organizational structure. In summer 2011, the academic support units were restructured, streamlining the provision of services to students. As we began the 2012-2013 academic year, a number of academic departments were merged, combining related disciplines into larger, interconnected departments within the two existing schools: the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Technologies, and the Graduate School and Professional Programs. In August 2013, these two schools will be replaced with three new entities within the Division of Academic Affairs. These will be: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, Business and Human Services, and Research/Graduate School/Continuing Studies/International Programs. As part of this restructuring, the University seeks a progressive and dynamic leader to fill the position of Dean of the School of Education, Business, and Human Services (SEBHS).
SEBHS will house eight academic departments that collectively enroll approximately 600 students in undergraduate majors/minors and master’s and doctorate degree programs. These departments are Business, Counseling, Education, Government and Public Affairs, Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences, Interpretation, Physical Education and Recreation, and Social Work, with approximately 75 full-time faculty members. Within these eight departments are 15 degree programs accredited by their affiliated professional organizations.
The Dean of SEBHS serves as chief administrator, spokesperson, and advocate for SEBHS. Among the responsibilities and activities of this position are: – Establishing and promoting objectives for SEBHS congruent with the Gallaudet Strategic Plan; – Ensuring recruitment, mentoring, and retention of exemplary faculty, staff, and students from diverse cultures and backgrounds; – Formulating and administering the SEBHS budget; – Fostering an academic environment that stimulates the creation of innovative teaching and learning programs; – Collaborating on development and marketing goals and implementation plans for SEBHS; – Overseeing accreditation for graduate programs; – Supervising the assistant dean and functional heads; and – Overseeing personnel actions for the School.
– Earned doctorate, preferably in one of the SEBHS discipline areas or one closely aligned; – A record of responsible leadership and supervisory experience in higher education (e.g., department chair; assistant dean);
– Successful teaching experience in graduate school and/or professional programs;
– An established record of publications and research;
– Demonstrated ability to administer successfully through a shared governance model;
– A record of cross-cultural commitment and efforts that have maximized the effective education of deaf and hard of hearing students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, including strong evidence of knowledge, leadership, and accountability for promoting the diversity of faculty, staff and students;
– Demonstrated expertise in budgeting and resource allocation to achieve strategic objectives;
– Evidence of effectively fostering application of cutting-edge learning theories and methods;
– Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans;
– Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, and advocacy skills; and
– Fluency in American Sign Language skills required at the time of application.

– Community Support Specialist
Our Deaf Mental Health Services program (DMHS) is searching for a Community Support Specialist CSS500 to work part-time (afternoon/evening hours 2-3 days per week) at our drop in center.
The purpose of the Community Support Specialist position is to provide overall staff support and direction to the Deaf Mental Health Services Program drop-in center services. The Community Support Specialist also has primary responsibility for scheduling and planning recreational/social activities in the drop-in. The CSP Specialist will provide psychosocial rehabilitation skill training to individual clients, and provide information, referrals, and advocacy for clients both in the center and in the community.
This position may require you to provide transportation to recipients using a personal vehicle.
Position requirements include:
– Fluency in American Sign Language
– Bachelor’s Degree
– Two years full time experience providing direct services to adults with serious and persistent mental illness

Our Deaf Supported Living program is searching for a Support Specialist/Mental Health Practitioner I (070-550SS) to work part-time (every other Friday and Saturday overnight, 12am -8:30am) at an adult foster care home for deaf, hard of hearing, or blind adults who experience mental illness.
Residents of the program are Deaf, mentally ill adults and may have histories of moderate to severe behavior problems and secondary physical handicaps. This position will provide awake supervision to residents in the program within the guidelines of each resident’s Individual Treatment Plan (ITP).
Position duties include supervision of the following:
– Leisure activities
– Medication administration
– Meal preparation
– Meal times
– Personal hygiene
Requirements for this position include:
– Fluency in American Sign Language
– High school diploma/GED – Driver’s license with a good driving record
– Willingness to work overnights and varied shifts

– Consults with agencies regarding professional and ethical conduct of contract interpreters
– Evaluates interpreter services and develops recommendations of changes based on community needs and service operation; shares information with Agency Director and Director of Operations – Completes monthly interpreter status reports and staff productivity reports, and analyzes departmental functions; reports findings to the Advisory Board
– Assists in coordinating/scheduling community and educational interpreters
– Acts as a liaison with local and national interpreting resources such as NAD and RID to foster improvement in interpreting services
– Works as part of a team to develop VI programs for the Deaf community – Works with businesses and organizations in the development of VI services
– Represents the Interpreting Program at agency and community meetings, as assigned by supervisor
– May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business
– Completion of ITP or Associates degree or three years of directly related experience may substitute for Associates
– RID CI and CT, or CSC, or CDI/RSC, or NAD5, or EIPA 5.0, or NIC Advanced
– Current valid New Mexico Interpreter License
– 2 years of interpreting experience, community interpreting preferred (1 year of experience equals 20-25 hours per week for average of 50 weeks per year)
– Pass drug screening
– Valid New Mexico Driver License, proof of insurance and New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division Motor Vehicle Report

– Teaching and facilitating participants’ independence in self-help, activities of daily living, and safety skills

The Department of Speech and Hearing Science seeks a full-time lecturer of American Sign Language (ASL). The nine-month appointment begins August 2013.
Responsibilities include teaching four levels of ASL at both the Tempe and Downtown Phoenix campuses, and participating in program advancement. Requirements include a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and three years’ experience teaching ASL at an accredited college or university.
Desired qualifications include five years’ experience teaching ASL at an accredited college or university, experience using Microsoft PowerPoint to produce classroom teaching materials, and experience with digital video production and editing.

Title: Contracted Project HOPE Health Specialist, approx. 16 hours/week,
to begin Jan. 2013
Duties: The contracted Project HOPE Health Specialist will provide light
case management for Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing, or Late-Deafened
(.Deaf.) individuals living with cancer, diabetes, or heart disease,
involving communication access advocacy and provider trainings as needed;
and provide health education to older Deaf adults aged 55 and up in Newton,
Taunton, and Danvers, MA.
Specific duties are as follows:
§ Conduct health education workshops and health-related activities for
older Deaf adults;
§ Develop and/or update existing PowerPoint presentations about
health-related topics affecting older adults, including nutrition and
healthy eating topics;
§ Conduct exercise and fitness classes that promote mobility, flexibility,
and increase energy
§ Outreach to the older Deaf community and encourage behaviors and choices
that promote healthy aging and healthy living;
§ Develop vlogs and flyers to recruit older Deaf adults to workshops and
§ Prepare monthly summaries of healthy aging activities, collect
demographic and attendance information, and assist with preparation of
§ Provide case management services including facilitating assessment of
consumers. health needs, development and monitoring of individualized
service plans, coordinating referrals for a wide range of support services,
and provision of support related to utilizing resources for self-help and
§ Assist in collaborating with health and medical service providers to
promote and advocate for Deaf-accessible services;
§ Establish service plans with clients and document progress towards goals.
§ Be available to work some evenings and weekend hours as needed.
§ Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications: Bachelor.s degree in a related field preferred, but not
required. Preferred qualifications include: strong interpersonal skills,
ability to prepare written reports and articles and meet deadlines, and
experience working with older adults. Required qualifications include:
strong knowledge of health topics related to diabetes, cancer, high blood
pressure, heart disease, nutrition, exercise and fitness, and disease
prevention; basic healthy cooking skills; knowledge of exercise/fitness;
minimum 2 years. experience in human services working with Deaf and Hard of
Hearing people, and conversational fluency in ASL. Must have own car and be
willing to travel.
Supervision: Reports to the Project HOPE Director.

Deaf Care Worker-Bryce Hospital
SALARY RANGE: 50 ($21,722.40 – $30,724.80)
* Works primarily in a specialized psychiatric unit providing care, habilitation, and rehabilitation of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) patients with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and chemical dependency in a state mental health hospital.
* Performs basic nursing care and assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
* Observes patients closely and documents patients’ physical and mental condition.
* Maintains the security of patients.
* Accompanies patients off unit to hospital activities, functions, and off hospital grounds to medical appointments and field trips.
* Communicates with D/HH patients in sign language.
* Performs assigned work under supervision of professional nurses and LPNs with instructions from physicians.
* Performs related work as required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be 18 years of age.
* Graduation from a standard high school or GED equivalent.
* Possession of a valid Alabama Driver’s License.
* Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at “native” or near “native fluency” level of signing skills as measured by a recognized screening process, such as SLPI/SCPI at the “Advanced” level or higher.
