– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Tony Nicholas was featured in a recent interview –
as a deaf artist, writer and producer; he previously
served as a deaf administrator of plays and programs.
He has lived in United Kingdom and in Australia.
He did not start out to be the way he is; he worked
for the Australian Taxation Office but found the
job boring and quit – to pursue his multiple interests.

In Ghana, the minister of Local Government and Rural
Development ordred all of the nation’s 170 municipalities
to hire interpreters at hospitals.

– Very Hot News

Just about every 2-year and 4-year college has Disabled
Student Services. One such college is College of Lake County,
a community college in Illinois. A newspaper story was
written up about that college – which stressed that
approximately 850 students were identified as disabled.
And that just 600 of them seek services from the Disabled
Student Services, which is about 70 percent. The story,
however, did not mention if there were deaf or hard of
hearing students that would refuse such services?

– Sunday December 25th

A seminar took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on how to
best address the needs of the deaf and the disabled. This
seminar was co-sponsored by several disabled-related
organizations in Malaysia.

– Monday December 26th

The Stanislaus County court system is becoming part of the six California county court systems in adopting video
conferencing to make ASL interpreters accessible to
the deaf and hard of hearing defendants.

– Tuesday December 27th

Is the congressional redistricting issue important in Maryland
or not important at all? Should be as far as Frederick County’s
large deaf community is concerned. Yet with all the arguing
going on back and forth, the political rights of deaf residents
were not addressed at all. The Maryland newspapers ran pieces
regarding this hot political potato.

– Wednesday November 28th

Ryan Flynn, not deaf and a former Motorola employee, is working
on an Andriod app that can do captioning wonders for us. Will it?
Time will tell.

A DEAF CLUB IN NEW CAR DEALERSHIP?
Years ago, a popular and a well-known deaf man worked
in a Washington, DC new car dealership. He specialized in
sales of new cars for deaf customers.
The dealership general manager hated it when many
deaf friends came to the dealership just to chat with
the deaf salesperson.
This general manager asked his deaf salesman:

Few weeks later, the deaf salesman quit his job.

A DOG AS A PET OR AS A HEARING EAR DOG?
DeafDigest editor and his wife, with the family dog,
were staying at a hotel in North Carolina as a stopover
on way to Holiday Season vacation in Florida.
The hotel in North Carolina allowed dogs, but there
is an extra charge for it.
The hotel policy is no charge if the dog is certified
as a Service Dog.
DeafDigest editor’s dog is a pet, not a Service
Dog. The hotel, however, said that if the dog’s owner
is deaf, then this dog is “certified” as a Service
Dog, no matter if the dog is a pet!
This was a surprise because DeafDigest editor expected
to pay extra for the dog in the hotel room.

DIFFICULT TO REMOVE BAD LAWS
Years ago DeafDigest ran a series that was titled:

You are deaf and are breaking the law if:

An example is – a resident of Jonesboro, GA would be
arrested if he said  “Oh, boy.” For some reason, lawmakers
made that comment illegal, and DeafDigest jokingly suggested
that if a deaf person signed in ASL  “Oh, boy” he would get
away with it, unless the police officer is a Coda and knows
ASL.
The Wall Street Journal ran a story on these bad laws, but
that efforts to repeal all of them were very difficult.
Amazingly enough there are people that do not want to
remove these bad laws!

RELATABLE: HOLLYWOOD’S RULE OF THUMB
A headline surfaced in a newspaper web posting. It said:

Deaf teens find relatable characters in TV drama “Switched at Birth”

Bingo! The phrase “relatable characters” should be the
absolute Hollywood Rule of Thumb.
If the audience does not relate to the main character,
then the movie is a joke. If a hearing character plays
a deaf role and is not relatable, then the movie is a
worse joke!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Have you ever begun to type on your computer keyboard without
realizing your fingers were on the wrong keys?  One or both hands may
have shifted one key to the right or left, and you may have ended up
with gibberish on your screen.  Sometimes you might have even gotten
something like “tune” when you meant to type “time.”

The same thing can occasionally happen to realtime captioners and
CART providers.  Because they write phonetically and write whole
words and phrases at the same time, they may end up with unusual
translations.  Hopefully they can correct the mistakes before someone
sees them, but the words may be sent to the encoder and then it would
be too late.

If the captioner’s left hand was one letter off, you could wind up
with “Kevin” instead of “seven.”  It would just be a matter of the
captioner depressing a “K” instead of an “S.”

Sometimes you can end up with a totally different word.  A person who
does not know steno may not understand that by simply shifting the
right hand one key to the right, a captioner who meant to write REPL
could write RULT.  These are actual steno outlines that some
captioners may use.

Instead of a sentence reading, “What do you recommend?” it now
becomes a nonsense sentence and reads, “What do you result?”

LEARNING ASL VIA VIDECONFERENCING
Could hearing students learn ASL via videoconferencing?
DeafDigest is not sure if this is the most effective way
but this is what a local high school is trying to work this
out with the Ohio School for the Deaf.
When hearing students look for “easy” credits to earn
by taking ASL, they will immediately forget what this
sign language is all about.

THE DEVIL IN FOLKLORE CULTURE
In Folklore Culture, the Beelzebot is a devil that creates
situations and problems for people.
Devil involved with the deaf? There is a tale going on that
the Beelzebot fell in love with Leela, a late-deafened young
woman. Hoping to win her heart, he promises to restore her
hearing in exchange for her love.
What happened afterwards? Do not know!

The Deaf and the Law:

The ADA does not cover everything. Here is the list of
what ADA does not cover:

– workplaces under 15 employees
– places of worship, private clubs and Native American tribes
– housing, since we have Fair Housing Act
– airline passengers, since we have the Air Carrier Access Act

If we feel being discriminated, check the facts first before
screaming!

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

In the early eighties California began to distribute
TTYs for deaf residents, free of charge, no questions asked.
Taking the hint, though not in TTYs, England will be
distributing hearing aids for its deaf residents, free of
charge and no questions asked!

(DeafDigest is not sure if England is still distributing
these free hearing aids?)

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Come January 2nd, many eyes will be on Bob Davila
as he comes on board as interim president of
Gallaudet University.
Gallaudet is entering the most critical period
of its 143-year existence.
As a career educator Davila has overcome and
solved problems and challenges in his profession.
He will draw on these years of experience to right
Gallaudet onto its future course.
We all welcome Davila on his first day on the
job.

(Davila had the “interim” tag removed, and under his direction, Gallaudet was left in a pretty good shape for the successor president Alan Hurwitz to inherit)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

DeafDigest editor spent the Holiday Season in
Florida to be with his family. He was told,
while driving the car, that there was a radio
ad. You guessed it, the ad was to urge people
to get their own CI’s!

If people are deaf how could they follow the
radio? If the message was aimed at Florida’s
senior citizens, then many of them are too
deaf to be able to follow the radio message?

This CI message is, indeed, puzzling.

The Maine Center on Deafness (MCD) is a nonprofit organization that serves people throughout Maine who are D/deaf, hard-of-hearing, late-deafened or speech-impaired by providing resources, advocating for social equality, and helping the general public to better understand and appreciate our constituents. life experience, culture, history, and civil rights issues.  MCD currently delivers programs in the areas of civil rights advocacy and legal services, adaptive equipment distribution and sales, communications and outreach for Maine’s Relay Service, and other programs.

MCD seeks an energetic and experienced civil rights advocate and/or attorney with program management experience to serve as manager of our Civil Rights Program.  We are looking for the right person for this position, whether an attorney or advocate.  Because we have a part-time attorney on staff already, attorney experience is a plus but not required. Similarly, ability to communicate in American Sign Language (.ASL.) is a plus, but not required.  We will consider applicants seeking either full- or part-time positions.

The manager of the Civil Rights Program (CRP Manager) is responsible for ensuring that the Civil Rights Program meets the service delivery and reporting requirements of our funding grants/contracts, and is delivering high-quality legal and advocacy services.   The CRP Manager will meet personally with clients to deliver advocacy services; if an attorney, the CRP Manager will deliver legal services and represent the client in administrative and court proceedings.  The CRP Manager also leads interagency collaboration, grassroots activism/education efforts, and systemic advocacy at the Maine Legislature.  The CRP Manager is responsible for effectively managing and reporting quarterly and annually on program outcomes, including budget, staff, and grant/contract compliance.  This position reports directly to the Executive Director and contributes to the advancement of MCD.s mission and vision.  Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and skills.

Applicants must possess excellent leadership, managerial, interpersonal, and written and communication skills.  Experience with civil rights issues in legislative and/or legal setting is a must.  Experience with ADA compliance, with civil rights law generally, and with special education law are greatly desired, as is experience with Maine’s legislative process.  Familiarity with ASL, alternative communication modalities, D/deafness, Deaf Culture, and hearing loss is preferred.  Attorneys will be required to maintain an active Maine license.

Technical sales engineers are a key point of contact for our large accounts providing services to organizations in which there are  multiple deaf and hard of hearing users  like Universities and educational institutions. The ideal Technical Sales Engineer will provide both pre- and post- sales support. They will drive the technical implementation as a project manager. They liaise regularly with other member of the sales team and colleagues from a range of departments such as Information Technology, Research/ Development, and Quality Assurance.

Fluency in American Sign Language is a requirement for this role.

Typical Work activities

Tasks typically involve:
–    Searching for new clients who might benefit from Purple’s products and services
–    Develop long term relationships with clients through managing and interpreting their requirements
–    Create manage and drive tasks on project implementation
–    Providing pre-sales technical assistance, product education, and post-sales support services
–    Preparing reports for management
–    Meeting regular sales targets and coordinating sales projects
–    Support marketing activities by attending trade shows, conferences and other marketing events
–    Making technical presentations and demonstrating how a product meets client’s needs
–    Liaising with other members of the sales team and other technical experts
–    Providing training and producing support material for other members of the sales team

Minimum Qualifications
–    Effective communication, written and presentation skills
–    Fluent in English and American Sign Language
–    Ability to interact with people of varying communications levels, and modify language for audience needs. –    Able to prioritize the work in a multi-tasking environment
–    Good team leading ability and managing additional technical resources for meeting the account needs
–    Able to make effective presentations or demonstrations in time constrained situations
–    Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
–    Knowledge of voice and video technologies and protocols
–    Knowledge of voice and video integrations
–    Knowledge of standard corporate security practices
–    Knowledge of TCP/UDP port allocation through corporate firewalls
–    Knowledge and experience with network infrastructure device (i.e. cisco switches/routers/firewalls)
–    Working knowledge of packet capturing applications (i.e. wireshark)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time:
–    Sitting, standing and walking (95-100%) –    Keyboarding (40-60%) –    Viewing computer monitor, videophone, and pager requiring close vision –    May be required to set up booths at events, requiring balance and lifting up to 50 pounds. –    May lift or move boxes (up to 10 pounds)

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Frequent travel to company, customer and vendor sites, including some that are out of state is required.

Position Summary
The Program Director will supervise and monitor the day to day operations of the residential and education services provided at the Pressley Ridge School for the Deaf.  They are responsible for the supervision of service delivery, staff, adherence to internal policy as well as external regulation and licensing requirements, sound fiscal operation, and communication and liaison with local community groups, schools, service agencies, and local state offices and courts of the county and stated.

A.    To ensure overall program direction and oversight to program operations, the Program Director will:

1.    Create and maintain systems for the documentation of all educational activities and uphold the confidentiality of all program records and files;
2.    Ensure that all program activities and staff practices are in compliance with the regulation and in keeping with Department of Education, DPW and Pressley Ridge policy, values, and standards of professional and ethical conduct;
3.    Develop and oversee a safety program that addresses the safety and well-being of staff and consumers in all activities and environments in which we work.

B.    To ensure solvency through adherence to the PRESSLEY RIDGE budgetary process, maximizing staff productivity and system efficiencies, and effectively using agency resources in pursuit of program goals, the Program Director will:

1.    Develop, implement and live within the program budget;
2.    Manage buildings and grounds, vehicles and equipment, and PRESSLEY RIDGE property and supplies in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE standards:
3.    Develop and manage systems for the efficient utilization of workforce by establishing staffing patterns, job designs, work schedules, and performance and productivity standards in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE values and standards;
4.    Oversee the development of educational costs and revenues, (per diems, etc.);
5.    Review and approve travel and receipt requests;
6.    Establish capital budget request.

C.    To ensure the maintenance of a full complement of competent and committed staff/treatment parents to fulfill the mission of the program and agency, the Program Director will:

1.     Develop and implement effective strategies for recruitment, screening, selection and hiring of a diverse, qualified workforce;
2.    Develop and implement effective staff development strategies including targeted training, supervision, succession planning and professional development programs aimed at enhancing staff competence, satisfaction and retention;
3.    Maintain effective performance management and evaluation system to ensure accountability;
4.    Administer an appropriate and equitable compensation program consistent with agency practices and standards;
5.    Maintain or provide oversight for the maintenance of updated HR files on every staff.
Essential Qualifications

1.    Education/Credentials/Licensure.  Master’s Degree in Education, Special Education and supervisory certification required.
2.    Experience. a.    Minimum of five years of experience working with children with severe emotional and behavioral issues,
b.    Working knowledge of the regulations and guidelines of Pennsylvania Department of Education, DPW, OMHSA as related to Approved Private School and Partial Hospital regulations
c.    Knowledge and experience in working in an educational setting utilizing strength based approaches to interventions with seriously troubled youth and their families.
