This just in:
When the FBI raided the home of Roger Stone to arrest
him in the early morning hours, his wife was scared
and confused. The newspapers said she was deaf. Do not
know the extent of her deafness – deaf but functioned
as hearing, or was late deafened or deaf all her life
but not knowing ASL?
Top stories about the deaf:
Some deaf people say that deafness is not a disability;
they point out to ASL, video chats, texting, captions
and interpreters. Well, what about underemployment
and unemployment?
Canadian telecom carriers have produced videos
to help the deaf understand rules and procedures.
A newspaper story was titled:
The strange cases of healthy people who want to be disabled
This includes hearing people that would deliberately
make themselves deaf!
Foreign language programs are being dropped at many
colleges because of budgetary concerns. One such
program not being dropped but seeing an increase
is the ASL programs!
The Dublin City University (Ireland) will be training
the deaf to become teachers of the deaf.

This week’s ASL video in youtube
CLEAR HANDWRITING IS IMPORTANT
A deaf man, with sloppy handwriting, went to a
restaurant. He wrote down his order. The waitress
could not believe it, and asked the deaf man if
the order was right.
The stubborn deaf man said his order was
right.
The waitress then delivered 8 milk shakes to
his table.
8 milk shakes?  He wrote down “light milk shake”
but the waitress thought letter L was E and it
looked like “eight milk shake”.
It is very important for a deaf person to have
clear handwriting!

DEAF PERSON AND HARD OF HEARING PERSON ON STREET
DeafDigest editor was walking in downtown
Washington, DC, and was stopped by a stranger who
asked for directions.
    DeafDigest editor told the person he was deaf;
the stranger suddenly signed, saying he is
hard of hearing.
The stranger wanted to know where the Audiology
Center building was. DeafDigest editor pointed to
the Audiology building in front of the stranger,
that he overlooked.
Never know if a stranger coming to you is deaf.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
There are a few different methods that court reporters, broadcast
captioners, or CART captioners can use to create and build their main
dictionary and other job-related dictionaries that will be used in
translating the text. Some schools offer prebuilt personal dictionaries to
students, and some software companies offer dictionary building kits.
Captioners often spend countless hours going through lists of names and
unusual terminology in order to add those words and phrases to their
dictionaries.
Knowing what is in his or her dictionary is one of the most important
pieces of information that a captioner can possess. If a captioner can
anticipate how a word or phrase will translate when it is written, then
the translation will be more accurate.
If a captioner added the name “Norrell” to a dictionary, he or she might
have to be careful if a story discussed how the information was “neither
true nor relevant.” If the captioner did not think of another way to write
it, that might translate as the information being “neither true Norrell
vant.”

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Many deaf people love to drink Coca Colas, and
they continue to be healthy.
But for one deaf woman in Sweden, she claims
her addiction to Coca Cola has ruined her health,
necessitating the need to seek treatment.
The court has approved her application to enroll
in a treatment center.
That may be true that addiction to Coca
Cola could ruin a person’s health – but that
woman is claiming that her deafness is the
reason for her addiction!
Do we believe it? You decide.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Confusion in India! The government has decided to
allow sign language interpreters on TV during
the Republic Day Parade. Yet, the government
minister of Information and Broadcasting would
not allow it.  Left hand not knowing what the
right hand is doing!
