Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. is one of the leading plaintiffs' litigation
law firms in America. The firm has played leading roles in national
and local litigations involving defective medicines and medical
devices. Our law firm is expanding its litigation against Advanced
Bionics related to defective cochlear implants implanted in young
children and adults.

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced with a
second defective implant that later failed.

If you or your child has been implanted with a defective cochlear
implant, we encourage you to contact Weitz & Luxenberg - we have a Deaf
attorney and VP available. To find out more, please click on:

Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Eddy Hernandez,
who was shot to death while walking on a Los Angeles
street.

Deaf himself, and pretty much beloved in the Los
Angeles Deaf Community, he coached the Fairfax High
School deaf basketball team.

The police is posting up a reward to find his killer.

- Very Hot News

Ultratec's own Pamela Young-Holmes has been honored
with a nomination to the National Council on Disability.

This would not be her first such honor; in the past she
served two terms with the U.S. Access Board, chairing
it once. Needless to say, her list of credentials
is long and would overwhelm DeafDigest's limited
space!

Congrats, Pamela.

- Sunday June 27th

The Time Magazine annually comes up with a famous
person making the cover of its annual July 4th
edition. The historical figure dedications has
been going on for nine years, and most of the
past dedications were USA presidents.

This time it was a deaf man - the world's most
famous inventor - Thomas A, Edison

- Monday June 28th

The Cannes Film Festival is the place to be noted
among those in the film industry that wish to
promote their films, hoping to win worldwide
honors.

One such honor went to the BBR Saatchi & Saatchi,
a global advertising agency. One of its
overseas affiliates won a Cannes honor
because of a simple innovation.

It was the flip-flopping of TV programs.
Normally the big picture would show the
program, and the smaller picture, in the
corner, would show the interpreter.

Instead, the bigger part of the screen
showed the interpreter and the smaller
part, just the program itself.

While it won plaudits in Cannes, would this
concept fly in USA? Doubt it.

- Tuesday June 29th

>From time to time we see deaf individuals tossing
their hats in the ring, campaigning for public
office. But two deaf individuals within the same
city? Either it is rare or never.

At any rate, at Faribault, Minnesota, two of
them have declared candidacy. Sonny Wasilowski,
who works for the state, is campaigning for
a seat on the Faribault city council,

Greg Mendenhall, an English teacher at the
Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, is
running for a seat on the Faribault School Board.

DeafDigest wishes Sonny and Greg a great deal of
luck in campaigning.

- Wednesday June 30th

Marcella Liggins and Christopher Turnbo, deaf
students at the Chicago Vocational and Career
Academy, entered the city Network for Teaching
Entrepreneurship contest with an idea.

It was to plant a wireless device inside
a hearing aid to hear clearly while talking
on their cell phones. This relatively simple
idea won them a consolation prize in the
contest finals.

(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)

......

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

the AgBell Convention, at Orlando, Florida came and
went - without fanfare and with regular convention
business being conducted. One thing stood out - that
no anti-oral protestors showed up. The protestors
showed up at the past AgBell conventions, but not
this time.

Said a hopeful AgBell member:

Maybe they've just "given up," realizing that protesting
is counterproductive, a complete waste of time and money,
and accomplishing nothing

HEARING PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE TTY MACHINES ARE OLD FASHIONED
We hate it when we use the VRS to speak to a bank or a
credit card company or a department store, and they tell us
we must use our TTY machine to communicate with them.
We try to explain to them that many deaf people have
stopped using the TTY because it is old fashioned.
And when they don't believe us and continue to tell
us to use our TTY, we only get more frustrated.

LATE DEAFNESS IN IRELAND
There was a newspaper story of some people in
Ireland suffering from late-deafness. They were
exposed to heavy noises for many years.
The newspaper said that some of them wait
15 years before finally seeing a doctor
or an audiologist about their late deafness.
    Why 15 years? Good question.

GALLAUDET, THE ATTORNEY AND GALLADUET, THE UNIVERSITY
Will Gallaudet, the attorney, work with Gallaudet, the
university, on law-related cases?
Doubt it because Gallaudet, the attorney, lives in
New Jersey. The real name is Lisa Gallaudet.
Again, is she related to the famous Gallaudet lineage?
Do not know.

A DALLAS COWBOY MYSTERY
Flozell Adams, who is deaf in his right ear,
played for the Dallas Cowboys for 12 seasons.
He played left tackle, where his deaf ear was
nearer the quarterback than his better ear.
The quarterback barks signals; because of
Adams' deafness he missed some of them and
was penalized for false starts so many times.
The Cowboys never used him at right tackle
where his better ear would be nearer
the quarterback.
Why would the Cowboys play him at a more
difficult position?
    Good question.

TO TOSS AWAY NOTES
A hearing person meets up with another hearing
person at a bar; they enjoy chatting for few hours
and then go home. Pretty much all of what they were
talking about are forgotten.
A deaf person meets up with a hearing person
at a bar; they enjoy passing notes back and forth
for few hours. At the end they go home.
The deaf person could have an advantage in that
he retains notes for future re-reading.
For ethical reasons, DeafDigest editor tosses
out notes. People, both deaf and hearing, say
things at the bar that they normally would not say
at home or at office !

THE MUSIC AND BASEBALL
Many deaf fans love to watch baseball games.
Nothing is more relaxing at the ball park; sipping
beer, munching on hot dogs and idle chatting with
other deaf fans.
A deaf fan would go to ball games all his life
without being aware of something that is going
on - especially when a relief pitcher or a pinch
hitter enters the game.
It is "entrance music" - to get an idea, do
click on:

http://deafdigest.com/baseballentrancemusic/

What we do not know may not hurt us. And
besides, not every ball player wants his own
entrance music !

A HOT ISSUE IN NEW JERSEY
There is a hot issue going on in New Jersey.
It is that the elected officials vote on issues
that are against the wishes of people that
have elected them.
    Are politicians accountable to their
consciences or to the wishes of the people?
Way back in the early eighties, DeafDigest
editor was the CEO of TDI. At that time,
TDI was a member of American Coalition of
Citizens with Disabilities (ACCD).
    Annual membership dues was expensive.
It was felt that the ACCD CEO, who happened to be
deaf, was ignoring the needs of TDI, while being
responsive to the needs of the board of directors.
Intensive discussions with the ACCD president,
also deaf, and the CEO over the accountability
issue got nowhere.
As a consequence, TDI dropped out. Needless
to say, ACCD closed shop few years later.
There is no right or wrong answer as to
who should be accountable to whom. Each
circumstance is different.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked by a hearing person:

how did your deaf client become deaf?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

For many people, this may look like some kind of gibberish.  However,
most realtime captioners, CART providers, court reporters, and other
people who have studied steno theory would have no problem
deciphering what those letters say.

When a person learns how to write on the steno machine, they learn
what is called a steno theory.  The theory is the language of machine
shorthand.  For their first three to six months learning steno,
students learn how to write the vowel and consonant sounds used in
the English language.

There are a number of different steno theories.  However, most of
these theories use the same key combinations to represent the
different letters of the alphabet.  Using the steno keyboard,
pressing one key or several keys creates these letters.

For example, if you asked any steno writer what an initial TK is in
steno, that person would be able to tell you that it is a D.   If you
asked what EU is in steno, that person would tell you that it is an
I.

Now that you know that, if you go back and look at the steno outlines
that began this article, they might make a little more sense.  For
those of you who cannot read steno, those steno outlines would
translate as:

Well, the Phonak, is testing a superhearing

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Now that the genetic code has been cracked, is there
a danger of genetic discrimination against the disabled,

Is FCC "gently" scolding us? This is the impression that

buy

or did he say:

by

or did he say:

bye

Of course, one can try to guess at the word by grasping the
rest of the sentence, though.

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
