– Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Charles Lemmond,
who departed us. He served five terms in the Pennsylvania state senate, and introduced a bill requiring hearing
screening exams for newborns. He had a special interest
in deaf babies, because he, himself, had a hearing
loss. DeafDigest does not know the extent of his
hearing loss.

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Sue Young, a deaf Australian woman, denied her
deafness all her life, resorting to bluffing
to get out of embarrassing social situations.
In school, she would either say yes or no,
in hopes either would be the right answer to teachers’ questions. Also she would rely on a
best friend to guide her through school, avoiding
“difficult” teachers and taking advantage of
“easy” teachers, etc. She depended on lipreading,
face reading and body language to get by. After
school she became a chef and for a while owned
a commercial kitchen. Unfortunately bluffing could
get her only so far – forcing her to give up her
business. Nowadays, she has owned up to her
deafness and is advising others not to bluff the
way she had been doing.

Could a 75-year old deaf man, retired for ten years, be
able to re-join the work force? A newspaper story
was written up about Joe Falgier, Maplewood, Missouri,
trying to find a job. Before he retired, he only had
two jobs in his life, and always had this strong
work ethic. He is willing to find any kind of job.

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard, a Coda, accepted an
invitation to keynote his speech at the NAD Conference in
Louisville next month. This innocent-looking invitation became a firestorm in the Deaf Community because of his views on
issues that pretty much affect us. As a result, he withdrew
his invitation, leaving the NAD to find another keynote
speaker!

– Sunday May 27th

Are we seeing a turnabout face by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, which oversees our
Deaflympics? For years we have said that we are able
bodied and do not want to be part of the Paralympics.
Now this – Craig Crowley, the Deaflympics president,
has hinted that we may need to join the Paralympics
movement! Even when the Deaflympics is officially
taking place at Sofia, Bulgaria next year, our
affiliation with Paralympics continues as our #1 concern.

– Monday May 28th

The number of deaf social clubs in USA has been
declining for the past 2 or 3 decades. Well,
in Alton, Illinois, a group of deaf people is
bucking the trend by establishing their own
social club. It is called the Riverbend Deaf Chapter. This new club was written up in a
newspaper story.

– Tuesday May 29th

We, the deaf, in USA have captions on many channels
(broadcast and cable). In New Zealand, there was an
announcement of the SKY network adding captions to
just four channels!

– Wednesday May 30th

Are hearing aid dealers crooks? No, not all, as
99.9 percent of them are honest. Unfortunately
there is always that 0.01 percent that is crooked.
One such crooked hearing aid dealer, in Bellingham,
Washington, was not licensed by the state. And also
took money for hearing aids that were not delivered
to customers. The state is working hard to bring
justice to customers that were cheated out of their
hearing aids.

– Deaf Miscellaneous stuff

Jay Alan Zimmerman, a deaf composer, is having his
stage debut with his Incredibly Deaf Musical in
New York’s Broadway this week. The performance is
much based on his struggles to deal with his hearing
loss and deafness.

A DEAF SEATING ADVANTAGE OR DISADVANTAGE
Sometimes deaf leaders, before a big deaf meeting
starts, would argue about where to pick seats around
a large conference table.
Do they seat next to the organization president?
Or do they seat across the organization president?
Or do they seat away from their enemies? Etc, Etc.
Hearing people also argue about seating. The same as

A STRANGE CI RESEARCH
Some research assignments are strange. In India, the
Defense Research and Development Organization is supposed
to research better ways to make the Army stronger (weapons,
missiles, computer technology, etc).
Well, the government of India told this agency to do
a strange research.
What was that research? To find ways to make CI cheaper
for the deaf!

WHAT HAS BECOME OF THE CLOSED VIRGINIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF-HAMPTON?
For years there were two schools for the deaf in Virginia –
one at Staunton and the other at Hampton. For years the legislators
did not know what to do with both schools – a continuing political
hot potato. Finally it was decided to keep Staunton open and
to close Hampton for good.
What has become the 70-acre campus at Hampton? The school campus
has been locked and boarded – but it did not stop vagrants from
invading the campus.
And there is still much indecision by the state and city officials
on what to do with the vacant property.
In the meantime, the Staunton school continues to prosper.

A FINANCIAL SERVICES LEGAL AND COMPLIANCE OFFICER
Financial Services institutions everywhere in the world, especially in Japan, have people working with legal and compliance issues.
Kim Su-rim is the Legal & Compliance assistant vice president of the Credit Suisse Securities in Tokyo.
She is deaf. She does not use sign language. A native
of South Korea, she is fluent in Japanese, English and
Spanish.
While she meets with clients on a one-on-one basis,
she is not able to participate in group meetings or
handle telephone calls.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

As viewers of closed captioning, we are very concerned that TV shows,
movies, and online videos are captioned for accessibility.  Different
companies have been in the news lately because of their efforts in
providing captioning on the Internet or failing to provide captioning
of their material.

What we need to remember is that it is not the just the quantity of
captioning that is important, but it is very important that the
quality of captioning be maintained.  Captioning must be accurate in
order to provide meaningful accessibility.  If an organization says
that they caption their videos, yet the accuracy rate is only 80% to
90%, that is not good enough to be considered accessible.  If one or
two words out of every ten are wrong, it is impossible to understand
the message being conveyed.

We must educate ourselves on what is considered good captioning, and
we must not accept captioning that does not truly provide access.  It
is up to all of us, as viewers of captioning, to provide feedback to
the companies so that they know where their captioning efforts are
succeeding and where they are failing.  Inaccurate captions are not
providing equal access.

A DEAF EMPLOYEE ADVANTAGE IN THE WORKPLACE – continuing series

Deaf employees in the hearing workplace are often
discriminated against and are often underemployed.
But there are exceptions. One such exception is:

A deaf advocate won the respect of his peers by
knowing more about the deafness issues than the lobbyists
his company hired!

The Deaf and the Law:

If you are deaf and are fired from your job, and
you file a lawsuit, claiming your ADA rights were
violated, would you stand a chance of winning?
Depends. A disabled employee won a lawsuit –
she was fired because of her health issues whereas
the company said it was because of employer-employee
confrontation.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The new superintendent at Missouri School for the Deaf is
Barbara Garrison. She will be moving from her present position
in South Carolina to assume the superintendency on July 8th

(editor’s note: She continues as a school superintendent,
a staying power inasmuch as many deaf schools suffer from
continuous turnover of superintendents. Not only that, this
school is enjoying an upsurge in enrollment, thanks to
the closing of a rival in-state oral school)

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

People of Rochester that hit the highways soon
will be confronted with billboard posters that urge
them not to drive while drinking.
One such poster has been designed by a deaf student,
Staci Kuppe, a junior at Rochester School for
the Deaf.
In the Monroe County annual STOP DWI Poster Contest,
Staci came out first in a field of 60 other competing
entries, submitted by local high school students.
She has been honored in a ceremony that took place
on May 29th.
Congrats, Staci.

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Is there such a thing as right ways for a deaf person
to find a job and also wrong ways for a deaf person to
find a job?
Possibly. Jobs are not always found through help wanted
ads. Over the years DeafDigest editor found jobs through:

1. networking with contacts at conventions and conferences
2. staying in the DC area where jobs are a bit easier to find
3. moving out of town, thousands of miles away upon a job offer
4. chatting with a contact at a Gallaudet snack bar!
5. listening to tips from job hunting deaf friends
6. found an employer whose spot in heart is soft towards disabled

And deaf friends have said that:
1. they started their own businesses because of no job offers
2. they wrote letters to good friends, asking for job leads
3. majoring in “high demand jobs” majors at Gallaudet and NTID

Still, job hunting is always a pain!

Under the supervision of the Elementary Principal/Assistant Principal, instructs Elementary School students in art subjects to include regular, Deaf with Special Needs (DSN) and/or PACES students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master’s Degree in Education of the Deaf with consideration given to applicants with a concentration in Art, appropriate State of CT Teacher Certification.  SCPI Level of Advanced.  Good judgment.  Ability to work in a collaborative setting.  Ability to work flexible hours when needed. The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) is a 501(c)(3) association with more than 15,000 members. The mission of RID is to support the continued growth of the profession of sign language interpreting by ensuring excellence in the delivery of interpretation and transliteration services between people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who are hearing. As such, RID is seeking a proven leader to serve as executive director; the ideal candidate is dedicated to promoting the welfare and growth of individual interpreters and the profession of interpretation and transliteration as a whole. RID currently employs 17 full-time staff and has an annual budget of $3 million. RID is located in Alexandria, Virginia.

Faculty reports to the Chair of the Deaf Studies and Deaf Education Department. The University seeks a person with high energy, enthusiasm and vision to work within the department that is in the process of programmatic expansion. The Department offers coursework at the undergraduate level in the area of American Sign Language (BA-ASL), at the graduate level with a Master’s degree (MS-Deaf Studies/Deaf Education and Doctoral degree Ed.D.) in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. In addition the BA and MS areas offer coursework leading to teacher certification. The successful candidate will possess strong teaching, research, and writing skills. Assistant Professor of Deaf Studies and Interpreting (DSI)

The Ohio University Lancaster Campus invites applicants for an Assistant Professor (tenure track position) in a two-year associate degree Deaf Studies and Interpreting program.  The chosen applicant will be expected to maintain a successful record in the areas of teaching/advising, research/scholarship and campus/community service commensurate with a tenure track position. Teaching load is 24 semester hours or equivalent per academic year in the DSI program (ASL, Linguistics of ASL, Deaf Culture, etc.). Additional duties include DSI program coordination across multiple campuses, recruitment and recommendation of part-time faculty (in conjunction with the Division Coordinator and the Associate Dean), student recruitment, academic advising, curriculum development, and program review and evaluation.

A Master’s degree in Deaf Studies, ASL education, ASL studies, cultural anthropology or closely related field must be earned no later than August 27, 2012.  Must have native or near-native competency in ASL and expertise in any of the following areas: Deaf Culture and Community, Deaf Education, ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Disability Studies and/or Second Language Acquisition.
