Top stories about the deaf:
A study was published in the JAMA Otolaryngology-Head
& Neck Surgery magazine on whether hearing issues may
lead to accidents at home and at work. It was implied
that lack of hearing may lead to lack of concentration.
True or not true? Just don’t know.
Is EMA ignoring the needs of the deaf of Puerto Rico?
It was FEMA that backed out of their promise to provide
interpreters for the deaf in Puerto Rico. An activist
implied that FEMA has violated deaf Puerto Ricans’
ADA needs!
There have been deaf people that want to be lifeguards
but were turned down because of their deafness. Some
have led to lawsuits. Anyway, because of shortage of
lifeguards at the Selinsgrove Community Pool (PA),
Nick Bertone, a deaf man, was sort of recruited
to become a lifeguard.
Isaac Liang, who is deaf and is from Singapore, has
emerged as a promising illustrator, working with
professionals in the film and video industry.
As a freelancer, he has lined up a number of
big corporation clients.
Maisie Sly, the deaf star of the acclaimed British
move “The Silent Child” will be having an audition
with the Queen.

This week’s ASL video in youtube
DISABILITY STUDIES VERSUS DEAF STUDIES
Disability Studies is a becoming a popular choice of
major at more and more colleges.
It will be interesting to observe the trend of
Deaf Studies with Disability Studies at these colleges.
Will Deaf Studies be absorbed as part of Disability
Studies? Or would both Studies co-exist as two
separate majors?
This would be interesting to see how things play out
within the next five years.

Lip reading tale
A hearing person was chatting with a deaf person
just as a third person, hearing, passed by them
The deaf person thought the hearing person said:
He is a room, a clown
The hearing person actually said:
He is a rube, a clown

DEAF PEOPLE IN FIJI
Fiji is a nation, way out in the Pacific Ocean,
and it has about 320 islands, but most people
live in two Fiji islands.
Anyway there was a research that said that
almost six percent of the Fiji people are
deaf.
Six percent of population is high. Why is
it that?
DeafDigest guesses it is because of
interbreeding among the natives of Fiji
that causes deafness? Nothing about interbreeding
was mentioned in the research report.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
The software program that a realtime captioner uses must be trained to
translate the captioner’s brief forms in the proper manner. All steno
strokes must be entered into a computer dictionary and matched to an
English translation.
Mistakes are sometimes made by stenocaptioners who may think they have
certain strokes defined in their dictionary in a certain way, but they
really do not. Sometimes they may fail to load a dictionary in their
software program that has the required entries in it. Occasionally there
may also be a computer malfunction that fails to load the proper
dictionaries.
For instance, if the name of the former president of Iran were to come up,
the captioner may have a brief form designated for that. He or she might
have determined the name Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could be written using the
steno PHAUPL/PHAUPL.
Unfortunately, if for some reason that information wasn’t properly
entered in the computer, that steno might translate as former president
“Mom Mom.”

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Could hackers be able to hack into a deaf
person’s TTY relay account?
There was a big story in the newspapers of a
Kettering, Ohio SWAT officers storming a home
upon a TTY relay report of an on-going crime.
It was realized the relay call was a hoax.
Was it a hoax because of the hacking efforts?

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Frederick Cook,
Nesco, NJ, that departed us. Himself deaf and a
graduate of New Jersey School for the Deaf, he worked
in a profession that where deaf employees are rare, if any.
He was a heavy equipment operator, a long time employee
with a construction company. And his deafness was not
an issue with the International Union of Operating
Engineers that he belonged to for many years.
