- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jim Jones, St Paul, Minnesota,
who departed us. Many successful interpreters in Minnesota got
their start with their interpreting careers because of Jim's
interpreter education programs. He became a chemist after
graduating from Gallaudet but it was not long before he
gravitated towards community service to the deaf.

DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Leonard
Marshall who departed us. After his days at Gallaudet,
he became the ultimate Deaf Club and Deaf Association
leader - involved with clubs and organizations in
California, Nevada and Indiana.

Another individual DeafDigest is dedicating is Annette Marie (Pois)
Long, San Antonio, TX, who departed us. As a Coda, she interpreted
for many years before RID was born.! And when RID was in its
infancy, she jumped in and helped build it up into an efficient
national organization. She also helped train generations of future
interpreters with programs in Arizona and in the US Trust
Territories. Not stopping, she developed guidelines for medical
and legal interpreting. And most important of all, her two
daughters are also interpreters. Thank you very much, Annette.
You are one of the heroes that helped us, the deaf, achieve a
quality of life.

- What the best stories are saying about the deaf?

Autumn Courts, who is deaf, is a junior at Lewisburg HS
in Mississippi and is part of the state's championship
dance team. She was always interested in dancing but
did not try out for the school team until this year.
In a newspaper interview, she said "follow your dreams"

K. Murali, first name not known, is a deaf filmmaker in
India, with 40 films to his credit, all on deaf themes
and deaf plots. He was written up in a newspaper on the
featuring of his films at the recent Deaf Film Festival.

In this weekend's Parade newspaper pull out edition,
there is a story on Gallaudet's women basketball team
that enjoyed a sensational season.

- Very Hot News

The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network
scolded the National Relay Service for being "helpless"
when floods struck the Queensland territory. It was so
bad that Telstra, another Australian agency, had to
step in and help out.

- Sunday March 13th

Could a doctor accidentally ruin a baby's hearing?
It has something to do with the baby having auditory
neuropathy. This means the baby's brain has not been
normally processing the sounds. Anyway, noise during
the screening may destroy the baby's not-yet-developed
hearing skills! This issue was raised in a recent
posting by the CNN.

- Monday March 14th

Ranbir Kapoor is a famous Bollywood (India) actor. He
is not deaf. Anyway when he won a role to play a deaf
character in an upcoming film, he attended several
schools for the deaf in India just to observe how
the deaf people function with daily routines.
DeafDigest is not happy that a hearing actor won
a deaf role, but it is India, which discriminates
heavily against the deaf in every way possible.

- Tuesday March 15th

We, the deaf, have become more and more fed up with
false promises of full captions that Netflix have
been telling us. As a consequence, a class action
lawsuit has been filed by Weston Firm, a California
law firm. The firm is saying ADA regs have been
violated.

- Wednesday March 16th

The journal distributed by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention ran a piece in its most recent
edition about the problems deaf people face on
health issues. The suggestion, raised in the article,
is to educate the deaf via the sign language videos.

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

The FCC has proposed a list of new rules that will enable
us, the deaf, to enjoy full accessibility to communication
needs. These are just ruling proposals, meaning fierce
opposition can water these rules down as time goes on.

A LUCKY DEAF ECONOMIST
We have had a few deaf graduates from colleges
with degrees in Economics. Finding a job in the
field of Economics is very difficult.
A deaf man worked for a big corporation. His
college degree was not in economics - but his
supervisors noticed he loved to read newspapers
and magazines and books about economics.
One day the corporation needed an economist.
Instead of advertising in newspapers, they just
promoted the deaf man to a job in Economics.
He was lucky. He worked at the corporation
for many years until he retired.

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU PARK YOUR CAR
This is a true story. A deaf man went to
a new car dealership to look at new cars.
The dealership was busy, and the parking
lot was crowded. The deaf man parked his
car in the wrong place.
The voice paging system said "please the
person with the white car move this car away."
The deaf man did not know about the paging
announcement. After he finished looking at
the new cars, he went to his car and it
was not there.
   It was towed.

A COMMENT BY A LATE DEAFENED PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS
A professor of physics lost his hearing. He had to make
accommodations. The most important one was requesting that
his class write down on paper their questions.
He said that when students write down their questions,
the quality of thought is much better as opposed to verbal
questions.
He also said that in the close-knit community of
physics professionals, the colleagues were supportive of him,
despite his deafness because it is ideas being exchanged
that was more important than the individual's condition.

A SKEPTICAL NEWSPAPER STORY
There was a newspaper story about a man getting back his
normal hearing after being deaf for 65 years, after being
implanted.
Able to hear again? Yes. Normal hearing? DeafDigest
is skeptical. After 65 years of no sound, it takes time
to adjust to different sounds. And besides, age may
diminish the ability to hear.
   Possibly the writer is exaggerating.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked by a deaf student to provide answers for
him during a classroom exam and then to be accused
by him of "refusing to help the deaf"

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

People have asked me: Are there some shows that may be impossible to
caption as a realtime captioner? What about some of the reality
programs where cops are nabbing thieves, bounty hunters are chasing
bail jumpers, and repo people are towing away repossessed cars?

On some of these shows, it seems like everyone is talking at the same
time, and they're using terminology that ordinary people may not
understand.

Fortunately, most of these programs are recorded in advance, and they
should not need to use realtime captioners. These programs are
captioned using post-production captioning. Although the programs
may be difficult to caption, someone may be able to take the time to
listen to the same segment over and over in order to try to
understand what everyone is saying. The captioner may be able to
research unusual terminology on the Internet.

Unfortunately, in order to save money, sometimes producers of shows
are choosing to use realtime captioning rather than post-production
captioning on these types of shows. When that happens, you may run
into a circumstance where it is an impossible show to caption
accurately.

If the speakers are too fast-paced and overlapping or if they are
using unfamiliar terminology, the realtime captioners can only do the
best that they can do the first time around. They don't get another
chance to listen to it. In this circumstance, it really is unfair to
the caption viewers because they deserve to see more accurate
captioning.

A COMMENT BY A PLAYWRIGHT
Playwright Kaite O. Reilly said, in a short newspaper story:

Sadly, in my 20-plus years of professional experience in theatre, I have
largely found a reluctance for companies to cast disabled and deaf actors,
even in parts written specifically for them

She is correct. She is from Wales and is one of the best known
playwrights in Europe.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

FEMA and National Disability Rights Network have
agreed on procedures to work together when
emergencies strike us (tornadoes, floods, hurricanes,
etc). For the deaf, it means communication needs
(captions and interpreters).

.....

The Deaf and the Law:

This is a true story, but identities are not being disclosed

A deaf man applied for a job at NTID and did not get it.

Angry, he filed a lawsuit, accusing NTID of job discrimination
on grounds of not hiring a person with a hearing loss.

The deaf man lost; NTID did not discriminate - because the
person who got the job was hard of hearing!

This case took place a good number of years ago

.....

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

The issue of 911 TTY calls was addressed at a recent meeting
at Lake Forth, Florida where deaf residents complained about
slow emergency response to their requests for assistance.
Brought up at the meeting was the problem of "silent 911"
calls. The dispatchers have been trained to treat such silent
calls as those from the deaf. But when pranksters punch out
these 911 calls, the dispatchers have no way of knowing if
these are genuine deaf calls or prank calls.
The same goes for 911 calls keyed in error.

.....

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Do people, both deaf and hearing, understand what Miranda
Rights are all about?
Well, a deaf defendant, in a murder case, is the focus
of a hot court room debate in Macomb County, Michigan.
After arresting her, the police claimed she was
given a Miranda statement via sign language.
The judge disagreed, saying she did not understand what it
was all about, and threw out her statements.
The prosecution is appealing the judge's decision.

.....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Could a deaf person hear the voice of Henry James in
a dorm room on the campus of Clarke School for the Deaf?
Yes, as a ghostlike voice, according to Brian Kiteley,
not deaf, who wrote a novel on ghosts.
Backtrack - Henry James was one of the world's most
famous 19th century writers, and he was staying at a hotel
in Northampton, MA. That hotel converted to a dorm when
Clarke School established its own campus.
Kiteley, the chair of the English department at
University of Denver, teaches the university creative
writing classes. He recently gave a speech at Northampton
where he grew up and that was when he brought up the
ghost on the Clarke campus.

...

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

A fellow employee was cleaning up the desk of another
employee that left the company. She was grimacing and
rubbing her hands.

- The deaf person asked:

what

- The hearing person said:

Litter

- the deaf person replied:

Litter?

- The hearing person said no and pointed to the floor and
there was a bit of glitter on it.

The deaf person then realized she was actually saying glitter
