– Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Adele J Krug,
who departed us at the age of 104. She was pretty much a Gallaudet library legend during her much younger days, always shushing the noisy students
to quiet down, to help students find the material
they need to do their term papers. And most important
of all, she trained many Gallaudet students to become
librarians in libraries across the USA. At that time,
Gallaudet offered Library Science, a popular major
before it was shut down. She was the wife of Walter
Krug, himself a Gallaudet legend in his own right.
A few weeks ago DeafDigest mentioned a Coda judge
– Warren Krug; his mother was Adele and the father
was Walter.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Carolyn Pimentel,
psychologist at Indiana School for the Deaf, who
departed us. She was actively involved in discussions
over the internet concerning rights and needs of
deaf children in schools for the deaf. Knowing
these deafness issues came naturally to her because
her father was Al Pimentel, a past NAD CEO.

– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Do we have a deaf-owned private museum? Yes, there is one
in South Lismore, a small town in Australia. This museum has
an unusual name – Recycled Building Materials, and is owned by
Peter Robertson, who is deaf. It originally was a store that
sold antique stuff, but which later on was converted to a
museum. All interesting tales must come to an end because
the building’s owner would not renew the lease, forcing
Robertson to get out soon. He plans to put up all of his
stuff for sale online.

We’ve had many deaf theaters in the past, some national
and mostly local. Many of these theaters have closed up.
Yet we are having a new one – the Las Vegas Deaf Theatre,
founded by Aaron Coulson. It has debuted last week with
much dancing and singing in ASL.

The Rocky Mountain Deaf School will most likely have a permanent home.  Despite fierce neighborhood opposition,
the Lakewood Planning Commission agreed to the land
rezoning for the school. It is now up to the City
Council to seal the deal.

– Monday May 21st

Deaf Australians are having their first video relay
service – only that it won’t be in the privacy of
their homes. These services will be at kiosks at
public facilities. This service is being provided by
the Australian Communication Exchange.

– Tuesday May 22nd

India has now recognized testimonies in sign language
by deaf witnesses in the court room. The Indian Supreme
Court made this ruling, saying that the deaf can be a
competent witness and should not be prevented from making
a testimony.

– Wednesday May 23rd

Victoria, a state in Australia, shuts down interpreter training
programs. Why? The state is broke. Sounds familiar in USA?

– Deaf Miscellaneous stuff

The FCC issued a ruling on internet captions.
Are we, the deaf, jumping with joy? Well, a list
of organizations are not too happy with it and
have asked the FCC to reconsider.

TRYING TO LIPREAD THROUGH TEETH BRACES
A hearing friend, with teeth braces, tried to say
something to a deaf person.
The deaf person tried to lipread and could not
understand the hearing person.
The hearing person “apologized” and said that
teeth braces prevented him from clearly mouthing
the words.
Teeth braces preventing a hearing person from
mouthing words clearly?

MORE LAW FIRMS TRY TO HELP INJURED VETERANS
We have a number of injured veterans that also
became deaf during combat.
A big issue is military compensation, called
Traumatic Service Members’ Group Life Insurance.
Many veterans, especially those that became deaf,
have been reluctant to apply for this compensation,
thinking it may jeopardize their disability benefits.
This is why there are more attorneys interested
in serving the needs of the injured vets.

PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN LAW FIRM AND AGENCY SERVING THE DEAF
The Olinsky Law Group, a Syracuse, NY law firm, specializing
in disability rights, has announced a partnership with the
Aurora of Central New York, a service agency that works
with the deaf.
Both groups hope this partnership will lead to better services for the deaf, and the disabled.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

Have you ever experienced your hands shaking when you have had to do
some sort of performance in public?  What many people may not realize
is that nervousness may play a role in the accuracy of some court
reporters, captioners, and CART providers.

As a court reporting/captioning student sits down at the steno
machine to take a speed test, that person may find that as the
dictation begins, his or her hands begin to shake, and it may become
difficult for that person to hit the correct keys.

Just like it may happen with public speaking or performing, the
captioner’s hands may shake or tremble in new or unfamiliar
circumstances.  The first time a captioner goes on air, it may take a
few seconds or a few minutes for that person to calm down and to
become more accurate.

Some court reporters or captioners learn different techniques in an
attempt to eliminate the nervousness.  They may practice relaxation
exercises like meditation, yoga, visualization, and deep breathing.
Some have tried hypnosis to eliminate the anxiety.

Usually after a short period of time, the person will settle down and
be able to write cleanly and accurately, but it’ that first few
minutes in a new or unfamiliar environment that are very difficult
for some court reporters or captioners.

A DEAF EMPLOYEE ADVANTAGE IN THE WORKPLACE – continuing series

Deaf employees in the hearing workplace are often
discriminated against and are often underemployed.
But there are exceptions. One such exception is:

In the payroll department of one big company, there
was a high turnover of entry level high school
graduates who could not master the complicated
payroll system. Out of desperation, the company
hired a deaf person, himself a college graduate,
for this task. The turnover immediately stopped!
And the company executives were raving about that
deaf employee performing a task that hearing people
could not do.

The Deaf and the Law:

A deaf employee does not use sign language to
communicate. The employer finds passing notes is
nonproductive, and wants to deaf employee to learn
signs to make communication much easier. The
deaf employee refuses to learn signs. Can he lose
his job for that reason? No, according to the ADA
(notes is a reasonable accommodation) and the EEOC
also said deaf employees cannot be forced to learn
signs.

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Closed but never forgotten is Central North Carolina
School for the Deaf. Nearly a year after it closed permanently
on June 30th, the alumni association is hosting a picnic on
June 22nd.
Same thing with Nebraska School for the Deaf. The school
closed few years ago but the alumni continues to get together
from time to time to cherish the good old Nebraska days.
Politicians can close schools but cannot remove rich memories
of former students.

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

How long does it take for a charter school for the
deaf to win approval by the county school board of
trustees?
In the case of the Las Vegas Charter School of the
Deaf, it took six years.
Said charter school board president Elaine Haines:

a very long onerous 6 year process

The school will open its doors this fall in rented
facilities this fall.
Keep in mind Nevada is one of the few states without
a residential school for the deaf. There are mainstreamed
programs in Las Vegas and in Reno, though.

(editor’s note: this school, unfortunately, has run into
financial problems and has filed bankruptcy)

Feeling sorry for the parent of a deaf child?

Here is this comment, found in a newspaper –

Siobhan Corcoran, mother of three-year-old Steven, says that when he was diagnosed as deaf at the age of 16 months, the audiologist who tested him said to her:

Don’t be upset, or sad. He is going to have a fulfilling
life. He will drive, have a girlfriend, go to university. The person I feel most sorry for is you, because you will spend the rest of your life battling for him!

Faculty reports to the Chair of the Deaf Studies and Deaf Education Department. The University seeks a person with high energy, enthusiasm and vision to work within the department that is in the process of programmatic expansion. The Department offers coursework at the undergraduate level in the area of American Sign Language (BA-ASL), at the graduate level with a Master’s degree (MS-Deaf Studies/Deaf Education and Doctoral degree Ed.D.) in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. In addition the BA and MS areas offer coursework leading to teacher certification. The successful candidate will possess strong teaching, research, and writing skills. 1. Advise and counsel undergraduate ASL majors and graduate majors in Masters and Doctoral Deaf Education programs.

1. Fluency in American Sign Language
2. An earned doctoral degree in Deaf Education, American Sign Language, Linguistics, or a closely related field. ABDs may be considered.
3. Knowledge of Deaf culture and extensive personal and professional experiences within the Deaf community.
4. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge regarding the EC-12 application of ASL/English bilingual education and evidence based practices.
5. Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding in ASL acquisition by L1 and L2 learners.
6. Demonstrated teaching, research and publication skills.

1) who are Native ASL user.

Assistant Professor of Deaf Studies and Interpreting (DSI)

The Ohio University Lancaster Campus invites applicants for an Assistant Professor (tenure track position) in a two-year associate degree Deaf Studies and Interpreting program.  The chosen applicant will be expected to maintain a successful record in the areas of teaching/advising, research/scholarship and campus/community service commensurate with a tenure track position. Teaching load is 24 semester hours or equivalent per academic year in the DSI program (ASL, Linguistics of ASL, Deaf Culture, etc.). Additional duties include DSI program coordination across multiple campuses, recruitment and recommendation of part-time faculty (in conjunction with the Division Coordinator and the Associate Dean), student recruitment, academic advising, curriculum development, and program review and evaluation.

A Master’s degree in Deaf Studies, ASL education, ASL studies, cultural anthropology or closely related field must be earned no later than August 27, 2012.  Must have native or near-native competency in ASL and expertise in any of the following areas: Deaf Culture and Community, Deaf Education, ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Disability Studies and/or Second Language Acquisition.

–    Completion of an undergraduate degree and two or more years of experience in the design and implementation of public outreach program or related marketing experience are required. Experience in the telecommunication field, Traditional Relay Service or Captioned Telephone Service is a strong plus. –    Excellent presentation skills. –    Experience in public relations activities.
–    Hold a valid driver’s license. –    Fluency in English and American Sign Language.
