MANY BOOKS ABOUT THE DEAF AND OF DEAFNESS
Go to a deaf bookstore at Gallaudet and you will
see many books about the deaf and of deafness.
Many of these books are written by authors that
know nothing about the deaf, yet are able to write
books!
    Why? Good question.

woman about her son.

The hearing mother actually said:
my son goes to Pratt

DEAF AND HEARING BEHAVIORS
There are many hearing people with bad manners.
There are also many deaf people with bad manners.
Deaf and hearing people are human beings with
faults.
Problem is that when a stranger meets a deaf person
for the first time in his life. If that deaf person
showed bad manners, this stranger will think ALL
deaf people have bad manners!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
“What is the most unusual situation you have encountered when working as a
CART captioner?”
Realtime captioners often hear this question. Because these services can
be provided at any location, many wonderful surprises can sometimes occur.
CART captioners have covered many momentous occasions where presidents,
heads of state, and other dignitaries have spoken.
People are now using CART at numerous personal events, like weddings,
funerals, and bar or bat mitzvahs. CART captioners are traveling around
the world to provide access where there was none before.
Realtime captioners are going into many private areas, like doctors’ and
therapists’ appointments, 12-step meetings, and other counseling
sessions. Captioners can make communication accessible at meetings with
personal trainers or exercise classes.
Also, because of remote CART and captioning, the provider can work from
home on many occasions. A user of CART services can bring a computer with
him or her, and as long as they can get an audio feed to the captioner,
they can use the services of that CART captioner.
Some of the most unexpected results often come when trying to provide CART
outdoors.  What everyone involved has to remember is that it is often
difficult to see computer screens in bright sunlight. Also, CART and
captioning equipment does not work well in the rain or snow.
Sometimes it seems there is no limit to the new ways people can think of
to use CART services. I look forward to many more unique and surprising
assignments in the future.
