– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

We often see Lions Club eyeglasses and hearing aids
drop off boxes, especially in small towns. What is
being done with these hearing aid discards? Actually
there are just a few discards per year but these are sent to a repair place to fix them up before distribution. Those getting these free hearing aids are cancer patients that have lost hearing because of treatment drugs.

What is becoming of the Mackay School for the Deaf,
an English-speaking school, in Montreal? No one seems to
know. It was announced last year that the deaf school just
had to find a new home. Yet, almost a year later, there
has been no positive movement towards finding a new
building.

– Very Hot News

An end of era at Florida School for the Deaf and Blind,
and a beginning of a new era – at the same time! Danny
Hutto has retired as president of the school, ending
his 44-year era. The new era begins when Jeanne Glidden Prickett, from Iowa School for the Deaf, starts as the
new school president. Hutto, however, will be handing
out the diplomas at his final school graduation
ceremony.

– Thursday April 26th

A deaf British job seeker attended a job hiring fair, expecting
an interpreter. When there was none, he raised a big stink
which in turn became a big newspaper story.

– Friday April 27th

Disability Rights Advocates, an organization in California, is
become an “undercover testing group”, making these relay calls
to places of business to see which ones will respond and which
ones will hang up!

– Saturday April 28th

Summer of Giacomo (directed by Alessandro Comodin)
Another debut film, Alessandro Comodin’s “Summer of Giacomo” also tells a tale of youth, this time in Northeast Italy. Following Giacomo, a 19-year-old deaf boy on a summer’s day spent with his childhood friend Stefania, the film is having its Canadian premiere April 30th after screening at fests like Locarno and Rotterdam. It should work as a lovely companion piece to “Only The Young” if you’re looking for a double feature.

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

There have been cases of court cases in Croydon (southern part of
London) being delayed because of shortage of sign language
interpreters. But this is not all – the Applied Language Solutions,
which holds a contract with the court system to provide interpreters,
have canceled the service of an interpreter – without telling
the court, the deaf client and the attorney defending the deaf person!

A COLLEGE AND THE HEARING EAR DOG
A deaf man worked at a hearing college. He
brought his Hearing Ear dog with him everywhere
on the campus. He worked at the college for about
five years and left for another job.
When he left, many people were happy. Did
these people hate dogs? No, they loved dogs and
had many of them at home as pets.
They were happy because the dog brought in a lot
of fleas, dog hair, etc – that made the deaf man’s
office very messy.
It took a cleaning crew and a crew of exterminators
all day just to clean up the room!

A DIFFERENT WAY FOR A HEARING AID
A hearing person uses a hearing aid! Why?
Because he is deaf in one ear and uses that
hearing aid to hear better in that deaf ear.
This is interesting – because most deaf-in-one-ear
people do not use hearing aids. They just turn their
better ear towards the voice speaker.

ACUPUNCTURE HELPING DEAFNESS?
If a deaf person goes through acupuncture, does it help them get back their hearing?
Hard to say – there is research that says it helps those
with “sudden” deafness, but may not help those that have
been deaf all their lives.

VIBRATIONS AND THE DEAF
Many deaf people are sensitive to vibrations. These
alert the deaf as to what is going on around them.
But could musical vibrations help the deaf get messages from
hearing people? This is what Tarek Atoui, of the Sharjah Art Foundation in United Arab Emirates, is working on.
He conducted a musical experiment that lasted four days
with a group of deaf students from a school for the deaf.
So, will vibrations help? Too early to say, at this point.

A GOOD FEELING OF NOT BEING OBSERVED!
A past teacher, not deaf, passed away recently.
A newspaper obit praised him for his work with
all kinds of students, including the deaf.
The obit, in part, said:

He didn’t make his deaf students feel like they were being observed when they gave interpreted classroom speeches

Deaf people, in general, hate being observed, just like
caged animals in a zoo!

I attended a party to honor a special lady who is retiring after 30 years!

The banquet hall was full with mostly hearing people.

A couple of Deaf ladies attended.

As a Deaf-Blind person, I required a tactile interpreter with me all the time.

There were speakers lined up and eating was at the same time.

For me, I couldn’t eat!  I was stuck with interpreters interpreting in tactile!

What a starving evening it was, drooling over my plate!

Hey, it was an awesome evening, seeing all my old friends from the past!

Deaf-Blind people would enjoy both the eating and the greeting!

focuses on the Deaf-Blind.

Year 1888 – William Willard passes away. History is murky
but he has been credited with founding the Indiana School
for the Deaf. He lasted only two years with the school
but stayed in Indianapolis to pursue another endeavor –
real estate, in which he became wealthy. Yes, he was deaf.

Brief summary of duties:
This position works with customers on an outbound and inbound basis, helping them resolve any issues they may have related to using Purple products. This position works under minimal supervision.

– ASSISTANT OPERATIONS DIRECTOR for RESIDENTIAL SERVICES: (Full Time
Position) The qualified candidate shall possess: Bachelor’s degree in
Human Services field with two years of supervisory experience in
behavioral health and/or developmental disabilities program; OR a HS
with 5 plus years of experience working in the mental health field,
two of which must be in a supervisory role. Advanced ASL fluency
required.  Strong leadership, administrative, organizational and
interpersonal communication skills (both in person and in writing)
required. Strong ability to manage and complete multiple tasks,
priorities and projects as well as the ability to lead, teach, advise
and motivate staff and consumers. Responsibilities include:
Regulatory Compliance -Insure compliance with the health, safety, and
occupancy regulations and contract requirements of all relevant
Governmental and professional accreditation entities. Assure the
maintenance of DPW and other licensures as required. Budget -Insures
that program expenses are kept within budgetary limits. Work with
Operations Director and other fiscal management personnel to develop
yearly budgets.. Supervision -Maintain a supervisory process
including both individual and group meetings of all program staff for
direction, guidance and support. Communicate agency policies and
procedures, client information, and all other relevant information to
staff as needed. Personnel -Oversee and recruit, hire and train
qualified staff to provide sufficient supervision and support to meet
client needs, agency standards, and contractual or regulatory
requirements. Develop department/division standards in compliance
with agency policies. Liaison – Maintain effective working
relationships with clients, officials, families and agency personnel.
Insure full participation in an interagency planning process for
individual clients as well as for service system development and
problem solving. Provide ongoing communication with psychiatric
service providers such as the psychiatrist, therapists and
specialized consultants or practitioners as well as county and state
governmental agencies.

– INTENSIVE CASE MANAGERS: (Full time position) This position provides
resources and support to clients and their families who reside in the
community.  Duties: Responsibilities include assessing services needs
of consumers, primarily children, to insure continuum of care;
develop service plans; independent living skills instructions,
advocate for access to public & private services and programs such as
medical, vocational and other services. Qualifications: BA/BS degree
in a Human Services field preferred; or High school diploma & 12
credit hours in human/social science with 2 years mental health
direct care experience. Must have strong organizational skills;
fluency in ASL, familiarity with other visual communication modes and
language levels. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends
as needed and travel various areas in the community. Knowledge of
laws governing the rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals
including IDEA and ADA a plus; and must have a valid driver’s
license.

– RTF RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various shifts available) This position
provides direct client services to adolescents, with behavioral
health concerns, in areas such as independent living skills,
implementation of daily activities, run weekly group meetings,
implementing a behavioral modification plan, assist with
homework/school projects and community integration.  Qualifications:
HS + 1 year related experience (preferably with
children/adolescents), valid drivers’ license; advanced fluency in
ASL; demonstrate competency in independent living skills; ability to
teach, advise and motivate; strong interpersonal skills.  Qualified
candidate will also be a strong team player who possesses a great
amount of patience and dedication to working with adolescents.

– RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position
provides direct client services including encouraging client
independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community
integration.  Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf
consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities
living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social
relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.

Summary:
The Principal serves as the chief instructional leader of the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) that serves deaf and hard of hearing students from infancy to grade 8. The KDES Principal focuses on high student achievement; building a positive school climate that supports the whole student; leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction; and building a high-performing staff and leadership team to achieve the school’s vision and goals. The principal collaborates with teachers, staff, parents, and the school community members to implement innovative educational programs and school systems that accelerate student achievement.  The principal leads the school’s leadership team and directs all aspects of the instructional and support service programs provided to students enrolled at KDES and their families.  The Principal is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and collaborates with other Clerc Center leaders in order to achieve the mandates for the Clerc Center contained in the Education of the Deaf Act (EDA). The Principal supervises and evaluates the Assistant Principal, the instructional coordinators, teachers, managers and the administrative support staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
–    Master’s degree in education of the deaf, educational administration or related field.
–    Three years successful teaching experience with elementary or secondary age deaf or hard of hearing students
–    Three years. successful experience in a school leadership position.
