Top stories about the deaf:

In India, the job set-aside quota for the deaf and
disabled is three percent of the total work force.
Critics are saying it too low and that it is
unfair to combine the deaf and disabled into
a single quota figure.

Sharon Contreras, who is deaf but functions
as a hearing person, has assumed the
superintendency of the Guilford County Schools
(NC). She even used ASL to greet one of the
students who is deaf.

Rania Saab is a deaf Australian woman. She
wanted to become an attorney. People in
Australia told her the deaf cannot become
attorneys. She wouldn’t listen, fought back
and is an attorney now after passing all
these necessary exams.

Scott Kerby, a former football coach at
California School for the Deaf at
Riverside, is the acting superintendent
of the sister school at Fremont. He
coached football in the eighties before
moving on in the field of Education.

In Bermuda, the Gilbert School, is
being threatened with closing.
It is the nation’s only K-8
school for the deaf.

CAN’T HEAR THE SUBWAY LOUDSPEAKER WARNING
You are standing near the door in a
Washington, DC metro subway car. Suddenly
the loudspeaker says:

please stay away from the door or the train won’t move

People stare at you with dirty faces and you do
not know why.
It is very embarrassing!

This week’s ASL video in youtube

ASL IN YAKIMA, WASHINGTON
Yakima is the 8th largest city in Washington; population
is just under 100,000 people. Yet, Yakima is probably USA’s #1
ASL city!
Employees at Yakima’s stores, shops and restaurants know
some ASL. They learned ASL from four different high schools
and from two different colleges.
And there are three coffee cafe chat events where hearing
people are invited to join in and practice their ASL.
A deaf person said Yakima is so much better than some bigger
cities, especially Washington, DC, for ASL users!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

I travel quite a bit for business, such as shows and workshops.

Trying to get my needs met as a DeafBlind person are not easy!  I need
someone to drive me there!

Or, I need to have someone meet me there and provide an SSP while I am
there.  Or, they will ask if my wife can do it.

All this costs extra and it is frustrating for them, and difficult for them
to understand.

Several organizations for the DeafBlind think spouses are the answer to
travel needs?????

Each individual who is DeafBlind will have different needs for travel due to
their own life experience and needs.

Often people will tell me “Y are brave to travel alone!”

Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.

Deaf Collegiate Athletes:

newspaper story

The first Purdue football team assembled in the fall of 1887. The boys
played one game on Oct. 29 against Butler at Indianapolis. Purdue’s first
coach was a deaf mute who had trouble communicating. He was a bright man
of a gentle nature from Lafayette named Al Berg. He had seen a football
game while attending a school for the hearing impaired in Washington D.C.
