TELLING A STUDENT NOT TO GO TO GALLAUDET OR NTID
Years ago, a principal of a deaf school hated
Gallaudet and NTID.
He told his best students, not to go to either
college but to go to a hearing college. He said it
is best for them.
One student wanted to go to a deaf college,
but the principal used heavy pressure on him
everyday, telling him to go to hearing college.
The stubborn student gave up and went to a
hearing college.
Was he happy? No, he was very bitter about
it. He became a board member of the deaf school
board of directors and used his powers to give
the principal very hard time!

WORKING AT DEAF PLACE OR WORKING AT HEARING PLACE
A deaf person worked for many years at a hearing
place, where he was the only deaf employee.
His boss would write down his tasks on paper –
#1 task, #2 task, #3 task, etc.
The deaf person would follow the notes while
doing his tasks. Easy. No problem.
The deaf person quit his job at the hearing
workplace to work at a deaf place (agency serving
the deaf).
His new boss was deaf. Not necessary to write
notes? Well. The new boss would sign in ASL very
fast – please do task #1, please do task #2,
please do task #3. It was so fast that he had a
hard time remembering these tasks.
This deaf person realized he made a mistake
by leaving a hearing job for a deaf job!

Q. A deaf person is denied an interpreter and files
a lawsuit and wins. But there is a sad irony.
What is it?

A. Because the wheels of justice grind ever so slow,
it takes years before this case is finally decided.
And by that time, the deaf student has already
graduated and have moved on with his life!

New Year’s Resolutions

Many of us make a list of resolutions for the New Year.

Here are my suggestions for you to consider.

– Become a Support Service Provider (SSP) for DeafBlind persons.

– Train to become an interpreter for the DeafBlind.

– Volunteer as a support for DeafBlind individuals in your area.-

– Bring a DeafBlind friend on weekly grocery shopping trips-

– Provide transportation to those in need to and from Deaf and DeafBlind events

These are a few ideas. The best way is to ask your DeafBlind friends what they need.

Thank you for all you do for us DeafBlind, and your continued efforts
to keep us as vibrant members of the larger Deaf community.

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is looking for a full-time Staff
Interpreter to be housed in its headquarters office in Tallahassee,
Florida. The Staff Interpreter will work with the VR Deaf, Hard of
Hearing, and Deaf-Blind team, and is responsible for statewide
consultations to staff and the general public relating to interpreting
services and general communication methods for individuals who are deaf
and deaf-blind. The Staff Interpreter will also assist in potentially
developing/coordinating a statewide Support Services Provider (SSP)
project.

The applicant for this position shall have high quality interpreting
skills, knowledge of accommodations for individuals who are deaf-blind,
and a good understanding of the VR process. This position requires a
minimum of a high school diploma plus a credential in sign-language
interpreting (e.g., state, national) in good standing, and preference will
be given to those who have experience working with individuals who are
deaf-blind. Salary is negotiable based on experience; the minimum starting
salary is $30,718.69.

preferred (1 year of experience equals 20-25 hours per week for average of

Johnson County Mental Health Department is looking for a qualified
candidate to fill the position of team leader for their Deaf Services
program. The team leader will provide administrative and clinical
supervision to a team that provides a range of community and office
based services with Deaf adults and some children experiencing severe
mental illness. The focus is on recovery primarily utilizing the
Strengths Based Case Management model of practice.

The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge regarding
community-based services, supervision of staff, Deaf culture, ASL fluency,
plus strong organizational and leadership skills.

Job duties include:
– Provides clinical supervision of Supported Housing staff, Case Managers
and Clinicians.
– Responds to clinical needs of the Adult Services program. Responds to
crises on team as well as crises on other teams when needed; conducts
various assessments and screenings as needed.
– Provides information to people seeking services. Coordinates with
internal and external providers and family members, facilitating coordination
of care.
– Ensures that documentation complies with Center and State guidelines;
oversees team documentation and provide training to team.
– Ensures evidenced-based practices follow center protocols and meet
expected standards.
– Participates in the planning, management, and administration of the Adult
Services program and participates in leadership roles within the agency as
a whole.
– Participates in the hiring process for staff on the team; reviews and
approves leave requests of employees; and provides or secures coverage for
staff when on unexpected leave as necessary.

Requirements: Fluent in American Sign Language; Kansas licensure at the
Master’s level (e.g. LSCSW, LMSW, LPC, LCPC, LMLP, LCP, LCMFT) is required
along with one year of supervisory experience and three years of clinical
experience working with adults. Kansas licensure at the Clinical level and
one year of experience working in a community based services environment
preferred. A good driving record is required.
