Years ago, a principal of a deaf school hated
Gallaudet and NTID.
He told his best students, not to go to either
college but to go to a hearing college. He said it
is best for them.
One student wanted to go to a deaf college,
but the principal used heavy pressure on him
everyday, telling him to go to hearing college.
The stubborn student gave up and went to a
hearing college.
Was he happy? No, he was very bitter about
it. He became a board member of the deaf school
board of directors and used his powers to give
the principal very hard time!

2013 Top News of the month (July to December)



A deaf person worked for many years at a hearing
place, where he was the only deaf employee.
His boss would write down his tasks on paper –
#1 task, #2 task, #3 task, etc.
The deaf person would follow the notes while
doing his tasks. Easy. No problem.
The deaf person quit his job at the hearing
workplace to work at a deaf place (agency serving
the deaf).
His new boss was deaf. Not necessary to write
notes? Well. The new boss would sign in ASL very
fast – please do task #1, please do task #2,
please do task #3. It was so fast that he had a
hard time remembering these tasks.
This deaf person realized he made a mistake
by leaving a hearing job for a deaf job!

The Division of Special Education seeks qualified applicants for a joint appointment as Assistant Professor in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Educator (DHHE) Masters degree program and the American Sign Language (ASL) Studies undergraduate program.  This position will manage the continued development and implementation of the DHHE program, as well as teach in the ASL Studies program.  The DHHE program has a comprehensive approach to preparing teachers to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing children.  This position is a full-time, tenure-track appointment with a split graduate/undergraduate credit load of 9/12 per quarter.  In addition to the academic year (fall, winter, and spring terms) workload, a summer workload is required, also.  Course delivery in the DHHE program is expected to begin fall 2015, with full-time appointment for this position beginning fall 2014.  Instructional delivery will occur during the academic year (fall, winter, and spring terms) and summer term, and may include both on-line and traditional instructional methods.

Responsibilities include completing the program approval process for the DHHE program through Western Oregon University (WOU), the Oregon University System (OUS), and the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC); developing syllabi; developing program-level assessments; creating observation protocols; recruiting, screening, and accepting students; recruiting adjunct faculty; teaching courses; coordinating the DHHE program; coordinating all aspects of clinical placements; coordinating, compiling, and reporting data to meet accreditation needs; and advising students.  The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in an online mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction. Responsibilities in ASL Studies will include teaching ASL courses (I-IX) and/or courses in the ASL Studies curriculum.  Outcome assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum.  WOU has a strong commitment to the diversity of its workforce and we encourage applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds.  An excellent benefits package is included.

Qualifications:   Earned Doctorate in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, American Sign Language (ASL), or closely related field of study.  ABD candidates will be considered but must complete the doctorate by the time of appointment.  General knowledge of ASL and the Deaf Studies field, which may include but is not limited to ASL teaching, cultural studies, Deaf Education, and interpreting.  Possess strong and effective teaching methods in various aspects of ASL and Deaf Studies or other related courses.  Extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community. Evidence of successful Deaf Studies-related teaching experience at the college level.  Demonstrated evidence of recent scholarly publications or equivalencies and activities or evidence of potential for such scholarly accomplishments.  Ability to interact effectively with both Deaf and hearing people.  Evidence of positive relationships and collegiality with university students, staff, and colleagues.  Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf Studies and Deaf community organizations on local, state, and/or national levels.  Commitment to Deaf bilingual/bicultural experience and its foundation in basic human rights.  Native/native-like fluency in ASL. Basic understanding of curriculum development.   Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

Responsibilities:  Teach American Sign Language and Deaf Studies content courses.  The standard teaching load is twelve (12) units per semester (plus committee assignments).  A reduced load will be assigned during the first year of teaching.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department (including curriculum and program development); engage in scholarship and community service and to remain current in their field; serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees, and to participate in other service as needed.

Curriculum Coordinator for 21st Century Learning
The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf
Philadelphia, PA

Reports to:    Director of Academic Technology and 21st Century Learning

Employment information:  This is a full-time, 11-month position.

Summary Statement:  The primary role and responsibilities of the Curriculum Coordinator include collaboration with faculty members and departments in the development, writing, alignment, implementation and assessment of district/common core curriculum (for the improvement of instruction), as well as the evaluation, purchase and incorporation of texts, resources and technology into classroom instruction K-12.

1.    Master’s degree required, preferably in related areas such as Instructional Design, Curriculum and Instruction, or related fields which include design, instruction, and assessment.
2.    At least five (5) years teaching experience in an educational setting.
3.    Past experience in curriculum instruction and supervision required.
4.    Extensive knowledge of common core standards and curriculum and instructional design, including integration of academic technology, emphasis on math and English Language Arts critical.
5.    An extensive knowledge of and experience with recent and emerging educational practices, academic technology, common core standards and assessment, curricular alignment, etc.
6.    Must be organized, assertive, creative, able to assume initiative and responsibility.
7.    Must be able to work well with people, hearing and Deaf.
8.    Comfort and breadth of experience with interactive and academic technologies
9.    Fluency in ASL.

Duties and responsibilities:
1.    Ensure that the school’s curriculum is aligned with the state standards to achieve school goals. 2.    Map and align current school curriculum and practices to common core – finding gaps, holes, and misalignments.
3.    Create comprehensive plan to move to full alignment of the common core by grade level and program.
4.    Align curriculum objectives to student testing
5.    Work with each grade and individual teachers to better understand and implement common core standards and meet alignment goals.
6.    Participate in the adoption of all textbooks and supplementary instructional materials. 7.    Provide ongoing evaluation of curriculum maps/curriculum guides, with annual updates of objectives and assessments;
8.    Work with academic departments to insure both vertical and horizontal alignment and best practices.
9.    Develop individual teachers abilities to implement and assess curriculum in daily practice and in planning lesson
10.    Monitor and evaluate staff curriculum development
11.    Develop in teachers. ability to check for understanding and track progress according to standards.
12.    Help create and manage curriculum guides aligned to state standards by grades and departments
13.    Be able to demonstrate through uses of such tools as pre- and post- tests of students. successful implementation of curriculum and improved or attained understanding.
14.    Understanding of the Danielson framework for curriculum practioners is preferred 15.    Experience, understanding, and knowledge of a variety of academic technology applications, and creative and extensive experience with integration of academic technology required.
16.    Ability to organize, lead, and train a variety of topics for professional development (in support of curriculum and instructional programs) in these areas required.
17.    Other responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the Head of School
