– What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Matthew Eby, a deaf teacher and coach (basketball and
soccer) at New York School for the Deaf-Fanwood, was
written up in a local newspaper. The story was titled:

Eby Teaches Students Through Coaching and by Playing Soccer at a High Level

Not only he is a member of the US National Deaf soccer
team, but he also played soccer professionally for a
while. He possibly is Gallaudet’s only soccer player
to have become a professional!

The primary form of communications at the Mozzeria
is mouthed “oops” and “excuse me” !
The Mozzeria is a new restaurant in San Francisco,
owned by a deaf husband-wife team. DeafDigest has
mentioned this restaurant a couple of times in recent
editions. Oops and Excuse Me are common phrases at
that restaurant. Why? the waitstaff is deaf, and
when the deaf waitress carries two full trays of food
on her two hands, she cannot tap on the shoulder of a
deaf patron to please move around a bit. Instead the
deaf waitress has to mouth “oops” or “excuse me”
when moving around the crowd to avoid bumping into
someone and dropping both trays on the floor.

Want to challenge The Donald? Marlee Matlin did last
year and it went nowhere. Now another deaf celebrity
has surfaced to challenge The Donald. It is Lou
Ferrigno (The Hulk). He and other challengers must
select a charitable organization of their choice
to give money to if they win. What is Lou’s charity.
Sorry, not a deaf organization – it is the
Muscular Dystrophy Association.

– Thursday January 5th

A paradox exists at the School for the Deaf in Mbabane, Swaziland. Every student in the high school class failed the qualifying exams. But every student in the primary classes passed the exam! Why? The high school and the primary school directors were vague, but said that some teachers do not know sign language.

– Friday January 6th

More and more deaf schools are reinventing themselves
because of declining enrollment and changing
demographics. The latest is the North Dakota School
for the Deaf. No more. It is now the North Dakota School for the Deaf/Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Instead of just NDSD, it is the NDSDRCDHH. Easy to
remember NDSDRCDHH? No way, but it is the way to go.

– Saturday January 7th

The Washington Post is one of the world’s most important
newspapers. Yet, the newspaper videos are not captioned.
Why? This question was asked by a deaf subscriber. The
Washington Post response was this:

We want to be able to include closed captioning on all of our videos but can’t put a timetable on it.  We are looking for technologically feasible and cost-effective solutions to this challenge and are open to ideas.

SOME HEARING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THEIR GENES
A hearing woman was surprised to have two
deaf daughters. She had no deaf members in
her family or in her husband’s family for
about 2 or 3 generations.
She was still puzzled about it, and
decided to research her family tree. She
went to libraries, archives and spoke with
very distant members of the family tree.
Her research went back to about ten
generations. She then discovered she had
several deaf members way back in the past.
How many people want to do heavy
family history research? Some do, but many
don’t.

KICKING OUT THE DEAF GAMBLERS
Many Americans love to gamble. Many deaf people also
love to gamble. There are many deaf poker tournaments
everywhere.
For many years the annual national deaf basketball
tournament, run by American Athletic Association
of the Deaf (AAAD) attracted well known deaf
gamblers. They liked to place bets on their favorite
deaf teams.
Not any more. The AAAD is also no more, replaced
by USA Deaf Basketball Association (USADB). And the
USADB officers are strict. Anyone caught gambling
on tournament games will be kicked out of the gym!

A LETTER FROM ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL
Alexander Graham Bell wrote a letter in 1878. It was
saved for years until it is now being put up for auction
by Amherst-based RRAuction (New Hampshire).
What about it? The letter may be valued at $18,000
depending on the final winning bid.
The 7-page letter details a telephone prototype
and explaining, step by step, how it will work.
Would the proceeds of the auction go to a
deaf organization? Wish it would, but it wouldn’t.

WAS THE GIRLS SCOUTS FOUNDED BECAUSE OF FOUNDER’S BOREDOM?
Juliette Gordon Low, a deaf woman, was bored at the
age of 51. She wanted to do something useful with her
life, instead of sitting at home, bored with nothing
to do.
She went out and founded a group of hearing girls
to get involved in a range of activities. This led to
the founding of the Girl Scouts!

33rd World’s Largest Silent Weekend / Interpreter Conference
June 28-July 1, 2012 in Orlando, Florida — 190 hours of classes
for interpreters, ASL & ITP teachers and students with 3.5 CEUs

Q. Is there a difference between Sign Language and Hearing
Workplace gestures?

Yes. Sign Language is a language of its own. Gestures is just
communication of one word – like a baseball umpire indicating
out or safe, or construction worker gesturing the crane operator
on the next machinery move, etc.

Winter is here!

Participating in winter activities outdoors is a challenge.

There are programs in your own state to provide support for various winter sports.

Here in Vermont, our program is called Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports (VASS). They have trained volunteers to help people who are blind, Deaf-Blind and with other disabilities to enjoy outdoor sports.

Some examples of winter sports volunteers can be used for are
downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating.

In Vermont, we are lucky to find a few volunteers who are Deaf themselves and are willing to work with the Deaf-Blind like me!

So, check out your own state for similar organizations to our
VASS program!

NTID Finance and Budget is a business unit within the college of the
National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT. This department is
charged with the performance and management of the financial
processes associated with the preparation and execution of NTID’s $90
million operating budget.

Assists in all aspects of managing the daily activities of the
College of NTID’s budget, ensuring compliance with policies and
procedures of RIT and NTID, as well as the Department of Education.
In conjunction with the Assistant Vice President, is specifically
responsible for the development, coordination and monitoring of
NTID’s operating budget.

– Develop annual operating budget based on current salary
recommendations, current and new academic and operational
initiatives, and revenue forecasts

– Monitor fiscal performance against plans for accuracy and
completeness, identifying concerns and areas of opportunity. Direct
departmental staff assistants in monitoring and balancing their
budgets and provide technical assistance to that end

– Provide analysis and reporting on performance of NTID’s operating
budget; perform financial analysis for management decision making for
the allocation of resources in current and future operating budgets

– Monitor all charges, direct and indirect, assessed by RIT for
services provided to NTID. Analyze all costs from RIT departments for
accuracy and reasonableness

– Maintain standardized and periodic reporting processes and
operating budget formats that are integrated with RIT?s enterprise
(Oracle) system; provide monthly updates of expenditures versus
plans, revenue forecasts, grant, designated fund and reserve fund
activities. Query the Oracle General Ledger and interpret the data
for use in reporting formats. Disseminate and explain variances

– Maintain detailed records pertaining to NTID grant activities
including distributions of F&A returns to NTID departments

– Audit NTID departmental expenditures. Provide technical assistance
in interpreting budgeting and accounting policies and procedures.
Assist in formulating spreadsheets and databases to manage
departmental budgets and operations and pertinent details to
constituents

Position Summary
The Program Director will supervise and monitor the day to day operations
of the residential and education services provided at the Pressley Ridge
School for the Deaf.  They are responsible for the supervision of service
delivery, staff, adherence to internal policy as well as external
regulation and licensing requirements, sound fiscal operation, and
communication and liaison with local community groups, schools, service
agencies, and local state offices and courts of the county and stated.

A.      To ensure overall program direction and oversight to program
operations, the Program Director will:

1.      Create and maintain systems for the documentation of all
educational activities and uphold the confidentiality of all program
records and files;
2.      Ensure that all program activities and staff practices are in
compliance with the regulation and in keeping with Department of
Education, DPW and Pressley Ridge policy, values, and standards of
professional and ethical conduct;
3.      Develop and oversee a safety program that addresses the safety and
well-being of staff and consumers in all activities and environments in
which we work.

B.      To ensure solvency through adherence to the PRESSLEY RIDGE
budgetary process, maximizing staff productivity and system efficiencies,
and effectively using agency resources in pursuit of program goals, the
Program Director will:

1.      Develop, implement and live within the program budget;
2.      Manage buildings and grounds, vehicles and equipment, and PRESSLEY
RIDGE property and supplies in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE standards:
3.      Develop and manage systems for the efficient utilization of
workforce by establishing staffing patterns, job designs, work schedules,
and performance and productivity standards in keeping with PRESSLEY RIDGE
values and standards;
4.      Oversee the development of educational costs and revenues, (per
diems, etc.);
5.      Review and approve travel and receipt requests;
6.      Establish capital budget request.

C.      To ensure the maintenance of a full complement of competent and
committed staff/treatment parents to fulfill the mission of the program
and agency, the Program Director will:

1.       Develop and implement effective strategies for recruitment,
screening, selection and hiring of a diverse, qualified workforce;
2.      Develop and implement effective staff development strategies
including targeted training, supervision, succession planning and
professional development programs aimed at enhancing staff competence,
satisfaction and retention;
3.      Maintain effective performance management and evaluation system to
ensure accountability;
4.      Administer an appropriate and equitable compensation program
consistent with agency practices and standards;
5.      Maintain or provide oversight for the maintenance of updated HR
files on every staff.
Essential Qualifications

1.      Education/Credentials/Licensure.  Master’s Degree in Education,
Special Education and supervisory certification required.
2.      Experience.
a.      Minimum of five years of experience working with children with
severe emotional and behavioral issues,
b.      Working knowledge of the regulations and guidelines of
