Top stories about the deaf:

Statistics can be depressing. There was a newspaper
mention of umemployment rates among the deaf in
Capetown, South Africa. It was estimated to be
70 percent.

Last year the deaf community of New Zealand was up
in arms over no TV captions at the Rugby World
Championships (just like our Super Bowl). This
time, Able, the nation’s TV network, will caption
every minute of the upcoming Rio Olympics.

There was a workshop with the Missoula Police Department
(Montana) on how to communicate with the deaf.
As usual, DeafDigest hopes the police officers will
remember these simple signs and gestures the next
time they come to the assistance of the deaf, which
may be years in between!

Michigan is getting tougher on interpreting
standards for interpreters. Keep in mind
the state standards is more stringent than
these nationally recognized standards.

A rogue employee at Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind stole $67,000 from the school treasury. As a former auditor, he had access to the funds, and he systematically skimmed
off the top, a little by little over a
span of few years. He was not caught until
the state audited the school books.

A BIG SCANDAL IN OFFICE

A deaf person worked in a office. He is the only
person that is deaf.

There was a big scandal. The company bookkeeping
showed a $2.60 difference. The boss was angry and
ordered an outside auditor to find out the $2.60
difference. It was solved but the boss had to pay
the auditor $525.00 for this job. Everyone knows
about it.

The deaf person knows nothing because no one told
him about it!

DOUBLE-WORD DOCTOR IN NAME FINGERSPELLING
When old time Gallaudet students wanted to talk
about one professor, they would fingerspell the same
name twice.
The sign name for that person, in fingerspelling,
was “dr dr” – saying it twice.
Dr Dr? Yes. The professor was Dr. Powrie Doctor,
and he was always mentioned as Dr Dr.
He died many years ago and today’s Gallaudet
students do not know who he was.

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

Shampoo/Conditioner

Taking a shower and washing your hair, but you cannot read the bottles without a magnifier?

In the past the companies had different color caps to identify each bottle.

This is not the case anymore!

We can feel the texture of the shampoo and conditioner to tell the difference,

But that is waste!  A simple solution is to put a rubber band on one of the bottles.

How do I look now?

Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
