Top stories about the deaf:

A British deaf activist has accused the legal
profession organizations of not supporting
the rights and needs of the deaf.

In recent weeks, NTID has been hiring
high profile deaf individuals for full
time positions on the Rochester campus.

Eleven Gallaudet students attended the
Democratic National Convention. A proud
Clinton supporter said:

This says a lot about where we stand with the Democrats and with Hilary Clinton and that
no deaf people and apparently no disabled persons attended the Republican National
Convention.

A group of 33 governors of prefectures
(same as states in USA) have agreed to
endorse the rights of Japanese deaf to
use their sign language.

Deaf-owned Hassler Hotel in Rome was
praised in a web posting as the #1 hotel
in the world when it comes to extreme
hospitality. It is owned by Roberto
Wirth, a graduate of American School for
the Deaf and a past student at Gallaudet
and NTID years ago before embarking on
a career in the hotelling profession.

DEAF CULTURE BOOKS?
How many Deaf Culture books have been printed?
Don’t know. Maybe 1,000 or maybe 5,000? Hard to say.
A hearing chef said he has his own library at
home of 4,000 different cookbooks!
A deaf person told DeafDigest editor that he has
a big home library of Deaf Culture books. He is always
buying new Deaf Culture books all the time. Does
he have 5,000 Deaf Culture books?
Good question!

A WRONG WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE DEAF
A hearing person writes notes to communicate
with the deaf.
This is great – but sadly, it is the wrong way.
She would use red pen ink to write notes on tiny
red post-it paper.
When the deaf person complained that it was
hard to read red ink on red post-it paper with
tiny handwriting, the hearing person laughed
and thought it was funny!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

Election time

Many people have been watching the Republican and Democratic conventions for the past 2 weeks.

I understand that there have been great live captions on TV, on-line and at some watch parties.

The sad part is that most of us who are DeafBlind are left out and need to wait until transcripts become available.

On a positive note, DeafBlind folks in the Boston area got live interpreter services during a “house party”!

You can see that getting information for those November decisions can be a problem!

Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
