In these Dick Tracy strips in these newspaper comic pages,
this famous detective used his wrist radio to communicate
with other police officers. Are we, the deaf, now able to
follow music via a wrist radio?

Yes, if Konstantin Datz has his way. His prototype
wrist radio for the deaf proposes to help the deaf
enjoy the music. It is sort of a computer compressed
into the size of a watch that would show the music
in pictures. It was exhibited at an event in Potsdam,
Germany.

There was a mixed feeling - of joy and of Deja vu when the
House Subcommittee unanimously approved the mark up on
H.R. 3101. The joy is that it paves the way for
more captions on videos. The Deja vu is that it means
nothing for the Deaf-Blind because funding on this
special need was not included in the mark up.

SOME HEARING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THEIR GENES
A hearing woman was surprised to have two
deaf daughters. She had no deaf members in
her family or in her husband's family for
about 2 or 3 generations.
She was still puzzled about it, and
decided to research her family tree. She
went to libraries, archives and spoke with
very distant members of the family tree.
Her research went back to about ten
generations. She then discovered she had
several deaf members way back in the past.
How many people want to do heavy
family history research? Some do, but many
don't.

we hug each other.

ACCESSIBILITY IN VIDEO GAMES
Last week's DeafDigest mentioned The International
Conference on Translation and Accessibility in Video
Games and Virtual Worlds. It was related to the need
to install captions/subtitles for the benefit of
deaf gamers.
A DeafDigest subscriber pointed out that for the
benefit of the Deaf Blind, there should be hand
held vibrators to help them play the games.

THE DEATH OF DON CORYELL
Don Coryell, the legendary NFL coach, passed away
few days ago. He was not deaf
What is his legacy to deaf sports? He coached two
pro football players that had hearing losses.
The first one, Bonnie Sloan, was profoundly deaf,
and an oralist. He played for Coryell in the 1973
season with St Louis Cardinals (now Arizona).
The second one was quarterback Billy Donckers,
who had a serious hearing loss. While he functioned
as a hearing person, he had to rely on lipreading
to reinforce his hearing. Donckers, who played
in the 1976 and 1977 seasons, was not a well known
player as he played sparingly.
In a letter Coryell wrote to DeafDigest editor,
he wrote:

I had to make sure Billy was facing me directly
so he could lipread while I was talking to him

AN ANTI-DEAFNESS PILL IN THE WORKS
A group of researchers from Auckland University,
New Zealand, is trying to come up with a new pill
that would reverse noise-induced deafness.
All they are asking is an investor that can
cough up one million USA dollars that would
spur research and development.
Another day, another news of an anti-deafness
innovation?

THESE IMPOSSIBLE-TO-FILL INTERPRETING JOBS
It is always a sad story when desperate school
districts, especially in small towns in least
populated states, just cannot fill these interpreting
jobs.
One interpreter told DeafDigest that she did not
enjoy working in small towns only for a professional
reason! She was the only interpreter in town,
being deprived of working with other interpreters
on varied assignments.
Her professional growth in the field was by learning
practical tips and pointers from fellow interpreters.
It is never an easy solution when a deaf child
needs an interpreter and the school district has to
scramble to find one.

TO BE A DEAF CHILD IN AFGHANISTAN
What is it like to be a deaf child in
Afghanistan? A web posting, in brief, said:

Approximately 10,000 deaf children live in Afghanistan. Most live
without any communication with the hearing world. Afghanistan has
a higher prevalence of deaf people due to several factors including
a lack of preventative services

This nation is landlocked and mountainous, leading to isolation
among many ethic groups. The comment above is not surprising.

OUR ORGANIZATIONS SERVING THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
We have many, many organizations, international,
national and local that serve deaf and hard of hearing people.

WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?

a newspaper headline said:

5-Year-Old Girl Rejoins the Hearing World

Huh! Was she was born hearing but became deaf and then
became hearing again, because of an operation?

A CI may help a deaf child join the hearing world but not "rejoin"
the hearing world.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Could improvements be made to the current CI as it
stands nowadays? Yes, according to researchers at the
Medical College of Georgia in Atlanta. They are inserting
more electrodes to the CI, but making these wires thinner
and more flexible. These findings will be featured at the
11th International Conference on Cochlear Implants and
Other Auditory Implantable Technology in Stockholm.

Q. Why do hearing people shout at deaf people?

A. They shouldn't. It is bad manners and embarrassing.

DeafHistory - Looking Back:

Year 1981 - Barney Miller, a popular TV sitcom-comedy
series featured three deaf people on one segment -
Phyllis Frelich, Peter Wolf and Seymour Bernstein.

Frelich played the role of a prostitute nabbed by
a detective, Wolf was the pimp and Bernstein was
the prostitute's attorney

Sign language communication between the deaf group
and the police officers was facilitated by a low
ranking officer who "knew" signs because of his
sister's deafness

This episode won many raves among the TV audience,
both deaf and hearing.

Deaf and the Money:

Cost of lipreading classes?

from £30 to £94 ($45 to $143) in Croydon, England

The agency lipreading classes was subsidized by the
Croydon city council in the past. But when costs
went up, the class was cancelled. Another agency
has stepped in and offered the classes for £70
($106)

DeafNumbers of the Week:

60 percent

Says who? A poll that was conducted by an agency

Is it valid? Nearly 3,000 hearing people were
