Understanding the Historical Roots of American Sign Language

“Sign Language Archaeology” is a new book that investigates the
development of American Sign Language (ASL), from its infancy to major
events is ASL history.

According to tradition, ASL evolved from French Sign Language. In this
engrossing study, authors Ted Supalla and Patricia Clark, analyze
metalinguistic assumptions of these early accounts. They also examine in
depth a key set of films made by the National Association of the Deaf
(NAD) between 1910 and 1920 that featured 15 sign masters.

Revealing the changes that have occurred to ASL through generations of
use, this book focuses on the rediscovery of the literary legacy of the
Deaf American voice.

Top stories about the deaf:

A group of ASL students at Illinois State University
and at Deaf Redbirds Association had a flash mob
in order to educate the public on what deafness is
all about.

A deaf British man was fined by the court for calling
a cop a pig in British Sign Language.

The NAD is pushing for Dummy Hoy to be elected to the
hall of fame. This is interesting since NAD normally
does not venture into the area of sports except
to advocate stadium captions!

A school for the deaf is closing up, but it is not
in USA. It is the Nogata School for the Deaf in
Japan. Low enrollment was cited as the reason,
and remaining students will be transferred to
a larger special education program.

A turf war is taking place between the Deaf Football
Australia (soccer) and a neighborhood. The deaf
soccer group wants to install a turf on the playing
grounds. The neighbors want the grass to remain as is,
citing the safety factor when children play on it.

HEARING AID WITH DEAD BATTERY
A deaf man was watching TV with his hearing aid.
Suddenly the battery went dead. He had no other new
battery and was too lazy to go to the store to buy
new batteries.
Instead, he turned on the TV set with very loud
volume. Neighbors were upset and they called the police!
It was very embarrassing for him.

I arranged to have an SSP work with me for the week.

She was not a highly skilled SSP but is an excellent Deaf interpreter.

The toughest part for her was trying to SSP for me while we were
burdened with two suitcases!

Her suitcase was twice as big as mine!

Detailed Job Description

Please note-this is Temporary Position

Teach three or four courses per semester in the broad areas of
Deaf cultural studies, structure of American Sign Language and
social sciences.  Participate in Institute service as time
permits.

Required Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral or Masters degree in Deaf studies or relevant social
sciences discipline and successful teaching experience.  Must

JOB DESCRIPTION: Teachers are a 187-day exempt position.

Responsibilities include appropriate academic work
to their students, use appropriate communication techniques
to assure clarity and accuracy of conveyed information, work
with their department Principal in guiding parents toward
identifying their child’s strengths and weaknesses and in
programming for them accordingly through the IEP process,
attend in-service meetings and departmental meetings to
participate in decision-making, to maintain current
knowledge in the field, and to gain understanding of new
techniques and methodologies in education, participate in
curriculum development and curriculum revision projects,
maintain records of grades, achievement, and discipline
according to the needs of each assigned students,
collaborates with other teachers to assure appropriate and
dynamic programming for all students, work on extracurricular
committees or projects and perform related work assignments
as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PA State Police Criminal Clearance,
PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Clearance, Act 82.

Valid PA Driver’s License required.

Teachers of the Deaf are preferred to enter a master’s level with
some experience.  The minimum requirement for this position is a
Bachelor’s level degree with certification in Deaf Education.  PA
Instructional I or II certification in Deaf Education required.

The Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) for this position
is “Advanced”.  The minimum level accepted at hire is “Intermediate”.

Job Requirements:

setting.
