Top stories about the deaf:

For many years deaf people of Adelaide, in Australia,
had their own clubhouse. Several deaf organizations
shared the club facilities to serve the deaf community.
This clubhouse may close – because expenses are so high
that no one can afford to keep it up with. The deaf
community is hoping a developer will buy the building
and then lease it back to them.

Many deaf people are taken to hospitals in Philippines
for various reasons. As a result, the Department of Health will be teaching hospital workers the Filipino Sign Language so they could communicate with the deaf
patients.

A British newspaper ran a piece on a critical shortage
of deaf individuals in a certain field – deaf teachers
of the deaf! A big reason is lack of money in the
budget to hire deaf teachers.

The Georgia Southern University football team has a
cheerleading unit rooting them on. One of the
cheerleaders is Hope Gasaway. She is deaf.

Why cannot every deaf person be able to discriminate what they hear through hearing
aids (or even through CI? Possibly because
deaf brains do not work together with the acoustics in the head? This was the theory
raised by researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany.

TWO DEAF DRIVERS AT DOMINO PIZZA
One Domino pizza place had a deaf driver for a long time.
He was the only deaf driver there.
One day that Domino pizza place hired another deaf driver.
Both deaf drivers did not know each other.
Anyway, that original deaf driver quit – he did not want to
work with another deaf driver!

A BIG LOSS IN DEAF HISTORY
A deaf man, whom DeafDigest editor knows from years back,
was a self-taught Deaf Historian. He never went to college
but had a lifelong interest in Deaf History. He would do
his research at Gallaudet library and at the Library of
Congress and write his findings in his notebooks.
At home he had many books in Deaf History plus many
notebooks.
He, however, never shared his findings with anyone,
pretty much keeping his discoveries to himself.
When he died, no one knew where to locate his
stuff. He lived alone and no close friends or family
members.
A sad waste in Deaf History.

A CHALLENGE IN NEBRASKA
In Nebraska, as with the rest of USA, there were Americans that
wanted to vote early and to get it over and done with.
Well, at the Lancaster County Election Office, if there were
deaf people that wanted to vote early with assistance, they couldn’t.
Official explanation from the state was this – machines, meant
for visually and hearing impaired voters weren’t ready yet because
of the  tight time constraints set by the state and the amount of time it takes to program the machines.
At any rate a legal challenge was issued – so have to wait and
see how it plays out in the courts.

WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?

a newspaper story said:

More deaf Pinoys are hearing today

Pinoys are people of the Philippines. Anyway the story
is about the CI, making these implantees an automatic
hearing people.

What the newspaper fails to mention is the need to take
mapping sessions, to take coaching sessions and to develop
the need to discriminate the voices they hear. Many
implantees do not follow up and as a result, they continue
being deaf despite their implants!

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. What was the most depressing thing about the presidential
election?

A. It was not that Obama won OR Romney lost. It was that
$930,000,000 was collected from Obama’s supporters and
that $1,029,000,000 was collected from Romney’s supporters.
The money was used to pay for TV ads, for newspaper ads,
and other campaigning stuff.

We are talking about nearly 2 billion dollars – which could
easily be used to help the deaf – schools for the deaf,
employment training programs for the deaf, social services,
more captions for us, etc, etc. All this thrown at presidential
candidates instead on our needs!

Baking for Thanksgiving

Americans are firing up their ovens to bake some awesome desserts for
Thanksgiving!

In the old days, the ovens had knobs instead of digital settings.

In the old days, we used to add “Braille markings” to help us set the
temperature.

Today’s ovens most often use digital settings.  We “Braille mark” the
push buttons!

Many people who are blind cannot read the number that is displayed on
panel.

We learn how to use it without our eye sight!

Press the oven button and in a few second it will automatically
set at 350 degrees

If you need to change the temperature to higher or lower

Simply press the oven button and then press  the “higher or lower”
buttons.

The trick is to count: every push will increase or decrease 5
degrees.

For example, if recipe calls for a preheated oven of 375 degrees,

press the oven button and arrow up 5 times-that is 375!

(Disclaimer-if yours is not a “Pellerin” oven, ask for an orientation
to your formula!)

Don’t forget the oven mitts!

college athletic web site does not show much, but personal
facebook says he is on the basketball team

– Colgate – Hannah Fitton, JR, women’s swimming; finished
2nd with her team in 800 free relay and finished 4th in
individual 200 free during the tri meet with Yale and
Lehigh

– Evansville – Connor Sprick, SO, men’s swimming; was not

ORGANIZATION: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy Resource Center (DHHARC) is a statewide advocacy, resource, telecommunications distribution, and direct service center offering services throughout Nevada.  DHHARC has two offices: one in Reno/Sparks and one in Las Vegas.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AS INTERPRETER TRAINER: The interpreter trainer will:

William Woods University

William Woods University invites applicants for part-time Faculty
positions in the Interpretation Studies in ASL/English Online Degree
Completion Program.  WWU Seeks qualified applicants to teach course
topics that include ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Generalist
Interpreting Skills, Ethics, and Interpreting in Advanced Settings.
Faculty in this program will not be expected to relocate and are able
to work from their current place of residence.  This program is
offered online, asynchronously, and mirrors the upper level ASL and
Interpreting courses that are offered on-campus.  WWU provides
orientation and training to work in our online Learning Management
system as well as 24/7 ongoing live support for faculty.
Additionally, part-time faculty members are included in curriculum
revision and feedback to ensure success of the program.

Qualifications:
For applicants planning to teach courses in the area of
Interpreting.
–       Master’s Degree in related field (e.g., interpreting,
interpreter education/pedagogy, linguistics, education, distance
education, etc.)
–       RID certification.  (State certifications, such as BEI, will
be considered, so long as the applicant holds the state’s highest
level of certification.)
–       At least 5 years experience working as a certified
ASL/English interpreter.
–       At least 3 years experience mentoring and/or teaching
interpreting students part-time in higher education.

For applicants planning to teach courses in the area of American Sign
Language, Linguistics, etc:
–       Master’s Degree in related field (e.g., interpreting,
interpreter education/pedagogy, linguistics, education, Deaf
education, distance education, etc.)
–       ASLTA Certification preferred, willingness to pursue ASLTA
certification required.
–       At least 3 years experience teaching ASL in higher
education.  (Applicants certified to teach in public schools and
teaching ASL at the high school level with at least 5 years
experience using nationally recognized curriculum will also be
considered)
–       Native use of ASL
–       Deaf applicants are strongly encouraged to apply

–       Knowledge of national standards for interpreter
practitioners, and research on interpreting.
–       Willingness to learn various state certification requirements

Executive Director

In relations with staff, the Executive Director will:
1.      Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all
personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.

2.      Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular
performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices
are in place.

3.      See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision
for succession, is in place.

4.      Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and
assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total
program of the organization.

5.      Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse
staff of top quality people.

In budget and finance, the Executive Director will:
1.      Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial
practices.
2.      Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing
a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

3.      Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the
organization to carry out its work.

4.      Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of
directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and
jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
Work Experience:
Required:
–       Minimum of 1-2 years working within Deaf and Hard of Hearing
populations.
–       Minimum 3-5 years of non-profit management experience.
–       Excellent interpersonal skills.
–       Fiscal compliance and management experience with regards to
Federal, State and local grants.
–       Grant writing experience.

Preferred:
–       Fluent in American Sign Language
–       Other advocacy position experience
–       Working with other Social Services/Human Services providers

Education Experience:
–       Minimum requirement: Bachelor of Arts/Science degree

Preferred:
–       Master’s degree in Public Administration, Master’s Degree in
Non-Profit Management or related field.

Qualifications:   Earned Doctorate in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, American Sign Language (ASL), or closely related field of study.  ABD candidates will be considered but must complete the doctorate by the time of appointment.  General knowledge of ASL and the Deaf Studies field, which may include but is not limited to linguistic principles of ASL and an understanding of sign language interpreting processes with ASL as the foundation.  Possess strong and effective teaching methods in various aspects of ASL and/or related courses in Deaf Studies.  Extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community.  Evidence of successful Deaf Studies-related teaching experience at the college level. Demonstrated evidence of recent scholarly publications or equivalencies and activities or evidence of potential for such scholarly accomplishments.  Ability to interact effectively with both Deaf and hearing people.  Evidence of positive relationships and collegiality with university students, staff, and colleagues.  Evidence of participation in ASL/Deaf Studies and Deaf community organizations on local, state, and/or national levels.  Commitment to Deaf bilingual/bicultural experience and its foundation in basic human rights.  Native/native-like fluency in ASL. Basic understanding of curriculum development.   Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

Responsibilities:  Teach American Sign Language and Deaf Studies content courses.  The standard teaching load is twelve (12) units per semester (plus committee assignments).  A reduced load will be assigned during the first year of teaching.  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department (including curriculum and program development); engage in scholarship and community service and to remain current in their field; serve on departmental, college, and/or university committees, and to participate in other service as needed.

position provides leadership role for residential staff and direct
client services. Qualifications: minimum of a HS + 2 year related
experience; valid drivers’ license; advanced fluency in ASL; minimum
of 2 years’ experience with Deaf Community; demonstrated an ability
to supervise, teach, advise and motivate staff members as well as
Deaf Consumers; must possess strong interpersonal skills.  Duties:
Provide guidance and training for staff and support to Deaf consumers

community; promote consumers’ independence and social relationships.

– INTENSIVE CASE MANAGERS – FOR ADULTS:  (Full time position)
This position provides resources and support to clients and their
families who reside in the community and in our residential
programs.  Responsibilities include:  assessing service needs of
consumers to ensure continuum of care; develop service plans;
independent living skills instructions, advocate for access to public
and private services and programs such as medical, vocational and
other services.  Qualifications:  BA/BS degree in a Human Services
field preferred; or High School Diploma& 12 credit hours in social
science with two (2) years mental health direct care experience.
Must have strong organizational skills; fluency in ASL, familiarity
with other visual communication modes and language levels.  Must be
willing to work some evenings and weekends as needed and travel
various areas in the community.  Knowledge of laws governing the
rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals including IDEA and ADA
a plus; and must have a valid driver’s license.

– RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position
provides direct client services including encouraging client
independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community
integration.  Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf
consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities
living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social
relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.
Qualifications:  HS + 1 year related experience; valid drivers’
license; advanced fluency in ASL; demonstrated competency in

Deaf Ed teacher needed at Northside Independent School District in San Antonio.

I am the parent of a Deaf child about to enter High School. At our last ARD we realized that the “Regional Day School for the Deaf” high school had hired a non-ASL Deaf Ed teacher.

I spoke to the Director of the AI (Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing) department, who also can’t sign and she said that they didn’t have the time to find someone that could actually assist the Deaf students.  I told her that I would help her identify potential candidates.
