Top stories about the deaf:

Implants come in two pieces, inner and outer. Future CI’s
may come in one piece, all that go inside. A major CI
manufacturer introduced this device, saying it is the
world’s first single unit processor, claiming FDA has
approved it.

Dr Philip Zazove, a deaf physician, has moved up the
chain, becoming the department chair of the University
of Michigan Family Medicine.

Because of a tough new law in New Zealand regarding
noise-induced deafness in the workplace, the Accident
Compensation Corporation, has been accepting less and
less deafness claims. Workers that have become deaf
have a hard time getting their claims heard by the
government – and this is making many people unhappy.

To make sure the emergency notification system is working in Deaf Homes in Travis County, Texas, a test is being
conducted this week with volunteers using TTY machines
and those using internet relay.

The city council of Ashland, Oregon has received 7 applicants
for a recently vacated seat. One of the seven applicants is
Kevin Bernadt. He is deaf, and in his application letter,
he wants to see diversity among council members.

FELT BAD FOR A YOUNG DEAF WOMAN
About 30 years ago, a young deaf woman, very intelligent,
wanted to attend Gallaudet.
Her mother, an immigrant, felt that college was a waste
of time for young deaf women and that they are better off
finding jobs and finding husbands.
That young deaf woman argued, argued and argued with the
mother – but the mother was stubborn.
DeafDigest editor knew that young deaf woman and felt
very bad for her.

HARD TO FIND JOBS IN A SMALL TOWN
For years one small town in USA had plenty of
jobs for both deaf and hearing.
Bad economy is the reason why it is hard to
find jobs.
For years an agency serving the deaf in that
small town would refer deaf clients to a hearing
disabled agency to find jobs for them.
Times have changed. The disabled agency is
sending back these deaf clients back to the
deaf agency!
Hopefully the economy will get better soon
and deaf job applicants will find employment.

A DEAF ARTIST MAKING A MALAYSIAN TOWN ANGRY
Louis Gan Yee Loong, a deaf artist, was commissioned by the
town of George Town, in Penang, part of Malaysia, to do four
murals in the town center.
He was expected to draw up murals to honor the town’s cultural
heritage. Instead he drew up two murals that promoted family values.
The angry town council told him to stop drawing the two remaining
murals.
When tempers got hot, his hearing brother had to step in to
defend the deaf artist.
This deaf artist will not be doing any more murals. It is not
known what will become of the two completed murals.

A CLARIFICATION RE OXFORD UNIVERSITY
DeafDigest Blue, this weekend, announced that Rachel
Kolb may be the first deaf person to become a Rhodes Scholar
(at Oxford University).
A clarification is in order. While Kolb may be the first
deaf Rhodes Scholar, she is not the first deaf student to attend
Oxford University.
Being a Rhodes Scholar and being a regular Oxford University
student are two separate things.

The Thanksgiving feast is over!  But, the Holiday season feasts are
not!

Speaking of food, we tend to cook more for the Holidays.

Since I am home most of the day, I do the cooking for the family.

Here is a helpful hint for people with who are Blind and vision
impaired.

When a family member bring home groceries, let the individual who
is Blind and vision impaired put the groceries away.

I find this helpful; I can then remember where it is!

Also, identify any new item or new item shape!

Remind me to tell you the story of when I added baking powder to a
recipe instead of cornstarch.  Are you familiar with the gag reflex?

William Woods University invites applicants for part-time Faculty
positions in the Interpretation Studies in ASL/English Online Degree
Completion Program.  WWU Seeks qualified applicants to teach course
topics that include ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Generalist
Interpreting Skills, Ethics, and Interpreting in Advanced Settings.
Faculty in this program will not be expected to relocate and are able
to work from their current place of residence.  This program is
offered online, asynchronously, and mirrors the upper level ASL and
Interpreting courses that are offered on-campus.  WWU provides
orientation and training to work in our online Learning Management
system as well as 24/7 ongoing live support for faculty.
Additionally, part-time faculty members are included in curriculum
revision and feedback to ensure success of the program.

Qualifications:
For applicants planning to teach courses in the area of
Interpreting.
–       Master’s Degree in related field (e.g., interpreting,
interpreter education/pedagogy, linguistics, education, distance
education, etc.)
–       RID certification.  (State certifications, such as BEI, will
be considered, so long as the applicant holds the state’s highest
level of certification.)
–       At least 5 years experience working as a certified
ASL/English interpreter.
–       At least 3 years experience mentoring and/or teaching
interpreting students part-time in higher education.

For applicants planning to teach courses in the area of American Sign
Language, Linguistics, etc:
–       Master’s Degree in related field (e.g., interpreting,
interpreter education/pedagogy, linguistics, education, Deaf
education, distance education, etc.)
–       ASLTA Certification preferred, willingness to pursue ASLTA
certification required.
–       At least 3 years experience teaching ASL in higher
education.  (Applicants certified to teach in public schools and
teaching ASL at the high school level with at least 5 years
experience using nationally recognized curriculum will also be

–       Native use of ASL

In communications, the Executive Director will:

In budget and finance, the Executive Director will:
1.      Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial
practices.
2.      Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing
a budget; see that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

3.      Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the
organization to carry out its work.

4.      Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of
directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and
jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.

Qualifications:   Earned Doctorate in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, American Sign Language (ASL), or closely related field of study.  ABD candidates will be considered but must complete the doctorate by the time of appointment.  General knowledge of ASL and the Deaf Studies field, which may include but is not limited to linguistic principles of ASL and an understanding of sign language interpreting processes with ASL as the foundation.  Possess strong and effective teaching methods in various aspects of ASL and/or related courses in Deaf Studies.  Extensive knowledge of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community.  Evidence of successful Deaf Studies-related teaching experience at the college level.
