Top stories about the deaf:

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
reached agreement with a Littleton, Colorado
apartment landlord regarding discrimination against
the would-be deaf renters.

Ontario MPP Ted Arnott, not deaf and representing
Wellington-Halton Hills, is pushing the provincial
government to improve on their services for the deaf.

Concern among deaf Illinois activists is that
the state commission is not doing enough to serve
its deaf residents.

Kim Kyoung-hee is a well known South Korean
singer. During a recent performance, she saw
a deaf fan in the audience, trying to reach
out for an autograph from her. She quickly
responded to him in the limited South Korean
sign language that she knew and then gave
him what he wanted – an autograph!  Can
we imagine Taylor Swift doing the same thing
in USA? Probably not!

A hearing aid battery that depends on human
saliva for recharging? Not exactly sure how
it works but there was a story about a team
of University of Toronto chemists that
is creating this such a battery. They say
it is better than having to purchase new
hearing aid batteries every few weeks!

SOME HEARING PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF THE DEAF
In some offices, there are some hearing people
that are afraid to communicate with the deaf.
They do not want to write notes. Instead they try to
communicate with crazy behavior.
Examples are:

– waving the workpaper left to right back and forth
– pointing at the workpaper without explaining why
– showing the workpaper about 5 feet away from the deaf person
making it hard to read

Is it funny or is it sad?

DO WE HAVE A DEAF BODY LANGUAGE?
Do we have a Deaf Body Language when these deaf people
try to communicate with the hearing?
Sometimes DeafDigest editor notices a “Deaf Body Language”
in a store or a restaurant or even at Starbucks or anywhere.
It may be a deaf person that DeafDigest editor does not
know. But after watching that person for a minute or two
then it becomes obvious that he is deaf.
Deaf Body Language different from Hearing Body Language?

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:

The Holiday seasons are getting busy!  Shopping for gifts, watching shows, enjoying Christmas music, etc.

It is also a stressful season trying to find gifts for loved ones.

This difficulty is multiplied if you are DeafBlind.

A few states have SSP programs to assist DeafBlind individuals with shopping and entertainment.

Many states do not have SSP program and we need to be creative and get people to volunteer.

It is a lot of fun to go out shopping and feel the products and make decisions for gifts for those special in your life.

Sitting behind the computer and reading descriptions of products and ordering online is okay.

Physically going out to shop is better for our health!

Walking is good for us!

Well, December is “Take a DeafBlind person shopping” month!

Go for it!

Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.

Deaf Collegiate Athletes:

Davis & Elkins – Jack Clifton, SO, tennis

his profile is at:
http://senatornation.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1387

he, unfortunately, cannot represent USA in international
deaf tennis competition for a good reason – he is a
British citizen!

How good is he? In singles, he is the team’s #3 player
and in doubles, is with the #2 team.

Overall, during the recently completed 2016 fall
season, he compiled a 0-1 record in singles and
0-1 record in doubles.

Deaf Elite Athletes:

For Deaf Tennis Player, Sound Is No Barrier

Lee Duck-hee, 18, of South Korea, is ranked 143rd in the world
in a sport in which hearing the ball is considered crucial.

Lee is exceptional among professionals, too. He is deaf, and no deaf
player in the sport’s history has reached these heights. In tennis,
simply seeing the ball is believed to be insufficient. Hearing the ball,
top players say, enables faster reactions — a crucial advantage in a
sport where powerful serves and groundstrokes mean that every tiny
fraction of a second matters.
