Top stories about the deaf:
A candidate for a political office in India was called
a deaf-mute in a newspaper story. Sudeep Shukla,
who is deaf, is vying for a seat in a city assembly.
If elected, hope he will make it a point to tell
newspapers to stop calling the deaf as deaf-mutes!
Japan had this postwar eugenics law which forced
deaf people to be sterilized. The count of such
sterilizations is now at 127 people; 109 of them
are survivors and they have jointly filed a
law suit against the government. This law has
been rescinded years later.
The national medicine shortage has hit the
Tetteh-Ocloo School For The Deaf student
clinic hard. Children get sick all the time
and the school nurse has no medicine to treat them.
This issue was rasied in a newspaper story.
Researchers at University of Rochester said
deafness could be reversed into hearing by
regrowing these cells in the deaf ears.
There was outrage in Kentucky regarding
polling places. There are touch-screen
voting machines, pretty much hidden
away – and not too many deaf voters are
aware of it – one has to ask for it,
and if they don’t ask, then they just
don’t use the touch-screen machines!

A TUNNEL ON A SCHOOL PROPERTY
Some schools for the deaf have tunnels under
their properties.
A past student at Arkansas School for the
Deaf was curious about the tunnel under the school
campus.
He went into the tunnel and walked all the way
to the end, which was four miles long. He saw
rats and some sewer stuff before he reached the
river.
    That tunnel has been closed.

ALMOST IGNORED A GESTURE
Last week’s DeafDigest mentioned confusion between
ASL and gesturing.
A deaf woman was in a room with a hearing woman.
That hearing woman always gestured when talking
with others. The deaf woman always ignored her.
But this time the gesturing hearing woman was
trying to talk to the deaf woman, and was ignored.
    It can be embarrassing.

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:
Looking for appliances that are accessible for DeafBlind people
is not easy.
Today’s technology is switching to the digital age!
My wife found appliances that are on sale but not accessible for me!
For example, I would rather have the control panel in the front
not in the back.
I would have to lean over the boiling water to turn on the oven!
Maybe there will be some hair in the pot!
Maybe it is time for a live-in cook!
Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
