Providing Solutions for People with Hearing Loss. .............................................................. .............................................................. A DEAF BANQUET IN YEAR 1943 In 1943, a deaf organization hosted a banquet for its members at a hotel conference room. The hotel staff removed the carpeting for the banquet. Why was the carpeting removed? Because the hotel people knew that deaf people liked to feel the vibrations with the music. With carpet, vibrations are impossible. Hotels won't do it any more today! - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/hotel/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) A SLIGHTLY DEAF STUDENT AT US NAVAL ACADEMY Few years ago, the US Naval Academy had a student that was slightly deaf. He should not have been admitted to the Naval Academy because perfect hearing is required to operate ships and to lead the sailors on the boat, etc. How was he admitted to the academy? He was a basketball star and the Navy needed good athletes. That was why the rule was bent! - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/usnavalacademy/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) A NEW SUPERINTENDENT AT WASHINGTON SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF Better late than never, but DeafDigest just learned that the Washington School for the Deaf has a new superintendent - Jane Mulholland. She formerly served as superintendent at Oregon School for the Deaf. OUCH AT TWO PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOLS "Ouch" was what DeafDigest editor said after reading a publication by Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD). It was learned that the legislators in Pennsylvania could not reach agreement, at that time, on the state budget. Both schools (WPSD and the WPSD-operated Scranton) needed 5 million dollars for operating funds for the time being. WPSD had to borrow 5 million dollars. And then to repay the money when the budget passed. Both schools are privately operated and relies on the state for part of their budgets. UPDATE ON GOVERNOR BAXTER SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf is located on an island on the shores of Portland, Maine. The last superintendent was Larry Taub, who has since moved on to similar position at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. The acting superintendent is Lynn Schardel, who used to be the statewide coordinator of programs for the deaf. When will the school have a permanent superintendent? Good question. And the school dormitories have been privatized to a house because of downsizing in enrollment. DeafDigest hopes the school will survive these hard times. A DILEMMA WITH THE CAVE SPRING COUNCIL Cave Spring is a tiny town, in the neck of the woods in Georgia. It is where Georgia School for the Deaf is located. Needless to say, the school is the town's biggest employer. In case one is asking on the size of Cave Spring, the town only has one traffic light. Anyway the town council has a dilemma. The town cannot ignore the needs of the deaf residents. Town mayor Rob Ware signs fluently but is not comfortable signing while participating in council discussions. Newly elected council member Peggy Allgood is a retired teacher with the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf and she has requested that interpreters be hired for council meetings. It would be a budget item the town cannot afford! Allgood's campaign pledge was to make it easier for the deaf to get involved with the Cave Spring community. KEEPING DEAF AWAY FROM DEAF One of the top athletes at the recently held Deaflympics was shielded from the ASL deaf almost all of his life. A coach with the American Deaflympics team wanted to recruit him but got nowhere with the parents and his school. They did not want him to mingle with the deaf and to learn, gasp, ASL. Instead, the coach went to Facebook and was able to connect with him. Needless to say the athlete was thrilled, and overcame objections of his parents to take part in the Deaflympics. This is a classical example of "keeping the deaf away from the deaf." There have been many cases in the past.
