If SightCine has its way, we, the deaf will be able to watch
movie subtitles in different languages, English included.
That start-up company refused to disclose the amount of
seed money it got from investors. Movie-goers would wear
special glasses to watch subtitles of their choice of
language. These subtitles, however, would be invisible
to those that do not wear special glasses.

Are you happy with the services the IRS have been giving
the deaf? If you are, fine; if you are not, then
IRS wants to know more about it. Were you happy or
unhappy with attempts to reach IRS, with TTY messages,
with the videophone, etc? How did the IRS treat your
relay operators? How long did you have to wait to
reach IRS? Did the IRS answers satisfy you?
Do email Jean Bell at mailtojean.bell@tigta.treas.gov

- Friday January 29th

Many deaf drivers drive over the Petty Island from either
the Benjamin Franklin Bridge or the Betsy Ross Bridge unaware
that the island is deaf-related.
This island sits on the Delaware River between Philadelphia,
PA and Camden, NJ.
What about it? Well, Ralston Laird moved his family to the island
and lived on it for about 60 years. Ralston is not deaf, but four of
his daughters were deaf. And there is talk of dedicating the island
to the memory of these deaf sisters.
There is a complication; Venezuela, because of its oil dealings
in the area, owns the island. Hugh Chavez, who hates USA, has
talked about giving away the island to the state of New Jersey.

- Saturday January 30th

Because of video relay issues, the FCC has withheld payment
on these relay providers on some relay calls. In fact FCC
has been holding the money bag since July!
The concern is that some providers, denied payments, may
cease video relay calls.
DeafDigest hopes there will be a quick solution to this
mess. Directly involved is the National Exchange Carriers
Association (NECA).

SCHOOLS FOR THE DEAF IN AFRICA
Andrew Foster, a famous deaf man, established 31
schools for the deaf and 2 centers for the deaf
in Africa. He died in 1987 in a plane crash.
Anyway, one of these former students of a
school for the deaf in Africa, said that his
school had a few hearing students!
Hearing students in a school for the deaf in
Africa! Why?
Good question.

POLITICAL FUND RAISING
People who want to run for political offices must
raise a lot of money to pay for political ads on
TV, radio, newspapers and to pay for campaign workers,
etc.
Famous hearing politicians have fund raising events
where they can raise money for them to run for
governor or senator or even president.
We have many deaf people that tried to run for a
political office but have lost – they have tried
to raise funds but only got very little money.
One person, not deaf, was able to raise one
million dollars to run for governor in one state.
That person did not host fund raising events. How?
The money was raised on-line via internet donations.
This is a hint for our future deaf politicians!

A DEAF VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER IN FLORIDA
We have a number of volunteer firefighters that
are deaf everywhere in USA.
The most notable one is Mark Kite who is the
Fire Chief of the Yukon Volunteer Fire Department
near Pittsburgh, PA. His story is at:
http://deafdigest.com/kite/
Anyway John Buccieri became a volunteer firefighter in
Marion County (Florida) in 2008. His goal is to become
a full time professional firefighter.
He is aware of discrimination against deaf firemen
but is going to fight these discriminatory regulations.

A JOB DESCRIPTION
A deaf advocate for a deaf service agency has a job
description that says:

travel to small towns to locate deaf residents and establish
communications with them

DeafDigest editor remembers, way back in the seventies, when
he and a friend visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown,
New York. He and the friend entered a restaurant and sat down
for a meal.
Word got around, and all of a sudden a lonely deaf man
entered the restaurant and joined the company, just for
conversation. He introduced himself as a graduate of New
York State School for the Deaf, Rome, NY and has been steadily,
but lonely, employed in a Cooperstown business place.

THE DEAF AND THE NOTES
Many banks are nervous because of robbers that
hand notes to the tellers telling them it is a
robbery.
A deaf person may innocently hand in a note,
thus making a teller nervous and jumpy.
To prevent this from happening, just tell
the teller first that you are deaf. And when
the teller acknowledges it, then do hand in
the note.

DOMINOES AND THE DEAF
Dominoes is a game popular in many parts of the
world.
Do deaf people play dominoes? DeafDigest assumes
they do, even though he has never seen them playing
that game.
Anyway it was interesting to see a deafyahoo group
posting, announcing a deaf domino championship
event in Miami, Florida.
Deaf Dominoes, anyone?

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

India just cannot make up its mind regarding the deaf
that want to drive cars. First the government said the
deaf could drive; then the government said the deaf
cannot drive. And now this – the government is
considering allowing the deaf to drive. Pushing the
government is the directive from the courts saying
the deaf deserve drivers’ license. The government
is being tugged in two directions – by those that
want the deaf to drive and by those that do not
want deaf drivers.
