News of the Week

   Capitol One gave a new credit card to a deaf
individual; this deaf person had to call the 800
number to validate the card, and was told to go to
his bank to "verify" his deafness.
   He went to the bank, and the banking officer,
in a telephone call with the Capitol One customer
service representative, verified the deaf person's
   Capitol One still refused to believe the bank's 
verification. The banking officer then handed the 
phone to the deaf person and told him to speak to 
Capitol One.
   The deaf person, whose speech was poor, said:

I am deaf; I cannot hear

   Presto, the card was activated!

   Said a deaf attorney:

There's been a lot of griping about how some Credit Card 
companies make it very difficult for deaf folks to deal 
with them.  Refusing relay calls is probably the most 

I think that there's litigation in the works over relay 
calls.  How those cases get decided will probably go a 
long way towards answering the question.

This particular situation may have been a technical ADA 
violation, as Cap One isn't keeping up with the times to 
ensure that access is real. I'm glad that it worked out 
here, and that the inconvenience was relatively minor


   Will sign language stand up in real emergency?
This is the question DeafDigest asks after reading about
Fort Smith's emergency operations rehearsal with 
"deaf victims".
   Fort Smith is the second largest city in Arkansas,
and the rehearsal was coordinated by a church serving
the deaf. Officers, firefighters, EMTs, medical personnel
and CERT volunteers have been learning sign language
for a few weeks and have put their new skills to the
test during the rehearsal.
   We need professional interpreters during real
emergencies, not one-time students whose sign language
skills may have gone rusty after years of non-use.


   Dr. Salah Ali, the leading educator of the deaf in
Bahrain issued an ultimatum:

 - either start schools for the deaf

  He was complaining on the lack of educational
opportunities for the deaf in Bahrain.


   A new building for the Delaware School for the Deaf
will become a reality when ground will be broken in a
ceremony on October 6th.

The 5th Annual Las Vegas World Deaf Poker Tournament

Saturday, October 10, 2009, 10 am, at the world's famous and
historical Binion's Gambling Hall.

The popular "no limit, Texas hold'em" will be played.

Hearing players are invited.
Binion's Gambling Hall is known to be the first to host the
World Series of Poker. They have two floors of poker
tables which indicates they are the best in what they do.

They have installed up to date TV monitors and other features
to make this tournament a dream.
Ask any of the previous players and fans from the past 4 years
how they enjoyed the experience. They will tell you how exciting
it was.
This year will be better. For example, based on 300 entries,

job performance reviews every year by his supervisor.
But when the supervisor leaves his employment and
a new supervisor his hired, he may not like the
deaf and may give the deaf employee a bad job
performance review!
   Scary that one year great job performance review

   A deaf husband and wife both have a cute hearing
grandchild from their hearing daughter.
   The cute child knows that her grandparents are
deaf - but she thinks everyone is deaf. When she
grows up she then realizes there are deaf people
and there are hearing people!

   The UPS reached settlement on a job discrimination
lawsuit with deaf applicants. They wanted jobs as
delivery drivers and UPS would not hire them on account
of their deafness. The lawsuit was in California.
   Well, DeafDigest learned that Carl Scarna, a
deaf New Yorker, worked for UPS as a delivery

   There was a story in a newspaper of yet another
comic book store closing up due to lack of patronage.
   Years way back comic books used to be wildly
   Many older deaf individuals have thanked comic books
for learning English, grammar and vocabulary.

   In big cities, certain restaurants hold tables 
for famous people. These tables are not reserved
but just left unattended in case famous people
show up unannounced and without reservations.
   Always wondering if a deaf couple enters
that fancy restaurant and is led to a table they
do not like (bad lightning or narrow table
or bad seats or whatever) and insist that they
be seated at a better table. And then to point
at a certain table they want to sit.
   What is the waiter going to do? No restaurant
wants a public scene if deaf diners are forced 
to sit at a table they do not want! 
   And panic-stricken waiters do not communicate 
that well with the deaf!

   To walk the dog in a big city is to attract
queries from passersby - like:

- what is the breed?
- how old is the dog?
- what is the dog's name?
- is the dog a Doberman Pincher or a Pit Bull?

  A hearing person could field these questions,
and allow strangers to pet the dog.
  It is a challenge for a deaf person walking
the dog. It is also lucky to have certain
easily-pronounced words like the following:

- breed (coon)
- age (showing 4 fingers on a hand)
- name (Squeak, somehow hearing people can follow it)

   One drawback is that dogs may be fighting or crying
as the deaf would not know if it is crying or growling!

   What was an oral school horror story? Years ago,
at 47 School for the Deaf in New York, the fingers
of deaf children were taped together so that they
could not sign.
   That must be way back before the 1940's. No
school can get away with it nowadays!

   Many of us know that Dr. R. Orin Cornett invented
the Cued Speech. He was a hearing person who met the
deaf for the first time in life when he accepted a
position at Gallaudet University in the fall of

and famous deaf web sites count him as a hearing person!

At one Domino store where I delivered pizzas, there was
a deaf woman who made pizzas. When she applied for the
job, the manager refused to hire her because of her
deafness. She persisted and asked to make one pizza
just to prove to him how wrong he was.

Her lightning speed in making that one pizza landed
her a permanent job on the spot.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

   For reasons of their own entertainers do not like to
have interpreters share the stage with them. Does not
matter when interpreters stand on the end of the stage,
not stealing attention from the entertainers.
   Chad Kroeger, a singer with the Nickelback, shouted
profanities upon finding an interpreter sharing the
stage with him. The interpreter had no choice except
to interpret every single bad word Kroeger said!

Responsibilities: Provide individual and group on-the-job training 
for individuals with various levels of hearing loss which includes 
teaching and coaching individuals to develop job skills, employee 
and employer relationships, work ethics and communication for 
successful employment outcomes.

Requirements: High school diploma or GED required.  Fluency in 
American Sign Language (ASL) or sign language a must. Excellent 
people and interpersonal skills.  Six months experience with training, 
coaching and motivating people.  Valid driver's license. Skilled in 
the use of structured training techniques for teaching job 
performance skills (such as sequence, quality, and quantity); 
job-related skills (such as grooming, socializing with coworkers, 
or managing one's paycheck); and work behaviors (such as accepting 
supervision, following instruction).

Department Chair: American Sign Language and Interpreting Education
National Technical Institute for the Deaf

NTID is one of the eight colleges within Rochester Institute of 
Technology (RIT), a national center of educational excellence.  

It is located in Rochester, New York, which is home to a large and 
vibrant Deaf community and has been named as one of the top 100 
American cities in which to raise a family.  

The RIT community is diverse, dynamic, and excellence-driven.  
Within the college of NTID, the ASLIE department provides American 
Sign Language instruction to the university's faculty, staff, and 
students.  In addition, the ASLIE department educates students 
seeking a baccalaureate degree in the field of ASL/English 

Chair responsibilities, in addition to traditional faculty 
responsibilities, include: Provide strategic direction for the 
design, delivery, and on-going evaluation of curricula; manage the 
composition, evaluation, and development of the department's human 
resources; monitor budget and maintain departmentally-assigned 
resources; represent the department to internal RIT and NTID 
stakeholders as well as national stakeholders;  and provide 
programmatic and curricular leadership to a nationally recognized 
faculty in the fields of American Sign Language instruction and 
ASL/English Interpreting education.
