This is the late Buck Dougherty, who was deaf. As a much younger person he played football at York High School in Nebraska, and as a senior in the 1965 season he was all-state, all-classes first team offensive lineman. He was the lightest player on the line and was the only player from small high schools. Newspaper stories did not mention his deafness until it was too late. By the time Gallaudet football coaches learned of him, it was too late and there was no way to recruit him. He played four seasons of football at Peru State University. He functioned as a hearing person and knew no ASL.
