queen-elizabeth-lipreading

Robert Panara taught at Gallaudet for a number of years before
he moved to Rochester to teach at NTID.

While at Gallaudet, he was asked by the Life Magazine (a popular
magazine way back) to read the lips of Queen Elizabeth who was
watching a University of Maryland football game in 1957.

He did not watch the football game at all; instead using
his binoculars to read the Queen’s lips and take notes.

Gallaudet president Leonard Elstad was not amused and warned
Panara to cut it out in the future!
